put more impetus on the Europa league for the 2nd half of the season?

I think even the biggest dreamers will admit 4th is out of reach now and while putting everything into the league from the start of the season made sense, it doesn't now.

At best we will get 5th but more than likely 6th or 7th this year with our remaining games.
However with the arrival of Sturridge, (is he cup tied?) the form of the likes of Henderson and Downing, the return to fitness of Enrique we actually could have a real chance of winning the Europa Cup.

So should this competition now take more weight when it comes to resting players and preparing for the next game or is the league still the bread and butter even if we can't reach the CL spots?

I for 1 would rather win another European trophy and risk dropping a few points in the league than send out a tired team in the knockout stages.

well personally i would rather win the Europa League than get 4th but sadly in this modern age that opinion is probably in the minority .

Anyway we don't have too many injury worries , we've numbers in the squad now in most positions (the quality of those numbers is debatable ) so i don't think it needs to be one or the other . Go for both .

I think you'll find that even the press are talking up our chances of 4th after our performances at United (2nd half), Arsenal (60 mins) and City (90 mins). It is far far too early to talk of being out of the race for 4th, especially when considering the matches left for the contenders and that teams like Spurs and Everton have still to come to Anfield. Odds are currently 7-1 which looks like it's worth a flutter to me.

Now if we want to talk about Torres getting 20 PL goals this year .. well my cheque is ready Ross !

We are 9 points off it at the moment. 9 pts!

No, there are 13 games to go this season.
We should go for a win in every game, be it in the league or EL.
That means playing your best team available.

4th is an unrealistic dream atm, but lets just take one game at the time and see where we end up.

We still have to play the teams from 3 of the 4 teams directly above us, at Anfield, which means we have the opportunity to take 3 points off each of them. These clubs still have to play at least 2 games each against one another, and also have at least a game against the top two (we don't).

So the league - bring it on.

What's another 2 Europa League games? We've a 20-odd-man squad which is young (hopefully meaning faster recovery) and a collection of players who are now well-rested and hopefully feeling angry and hungry due to diminished minutes - we could easily field 10 guys in a starting 11 made up of guys who've featured at one point or another in the starting lineup: Allen, Shelvey, Suso, Sterling, Borini, Assaidi, Coates, Skrtel; throw in Jones and Wisdom ias they won't be playing much in the league after Reina's and Enrique's return. Coutinho isn't eligible, but he can play in the Premier League games, meaning someone can be rested in the weekend and rotated into the midweek European games. That's a left back short (unsurprisingly, unless you gamble on Robinson again) of a full team of decent backup/ex-first team players that we can send away and try to scrap for at least a draw so we can finish the job at home.

So the Europa League - bring it on too. We may fall short, but it won't be for lack of able bodies (or trying, I hope). That's what all the young chaps have been given minutes for over the course of the season; this is their chance to put their lessons learned to good use and to show they're worthy of getting more chances.

no sturridge no coutinho. both cup tied

18.18 For all matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2013 (24.00 CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

18.19 One player from the above quota of three who has been fielded in a UEFA club competition group stage match for another club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded:
a) in the same competition for another club; or
b) for another club that is currently in the same competition.

18.20 One or more players from the above quota of three who have been fielded only in the first, second or third qualifying round or play-offs of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another club are entitled to be registered

18.19 excludes Sturridge as Chelsea dropped into the Europa League and he played in three CL games. Couthino is excluded as Inter have been in the Europa League from the start and he played in five games.

Ah, the press are talking us up for fourth. Cool. If those bastions of balanced opinion and inside source knowledge are on our side nothing can stop us.

Well, Sturridge isn't in the final registrations.

"While Liverpool are unable to call upon Coutinho or fellow January acquisition Daniel Sturridge for the remainder of their 2012/13 European exertions,..."

There's a link in that page with the registration changes. Ours are as follows:
ADD: Krisztian Adorjan (to List B), Jordan Ibe, Marc Pelosi
REMOVE: Joe Cole, Nuri Sahin, Adam Morgan, Daniel Pacheco, Danny Wilson

I just hope we don't have to play in this competition next season.
Half 5 kick offs somewhere in Moldova playing the reserves is one of the many things I hate about being a fan of football.

3rd spot > 4th spot... Spurs learned it the hard way last season. Not that I think a EPL team will win the CL this season but you never know; another freak set of results might happen. And seeing as the difference between 3rd and 4th now is just a point... heck, let's go for it.

Sorry to be a pedant, but you can't put impetus on anything. Put more importance on, or prioritise. "If we beat Zenit we'll have plenty of impetus for the next round" etc.
For the record, yes, we should go all out to win it, and all our remaining 13 league games. We are Liverpool.

Can't agree. It's far more important that we're playing Champion's League football next year, than winning a fucking UEFA cup. If we're going to be attracting bigger and better names, we need to be playing CL football.

I'd rather we won the UEFA Cup to be honest, unless I put an accountant hat on. But I think we should be concentrating on winning every game, all are important from now on.

Yes. All games are important from here out. But I still think 4th place should be our priority.

Just win every game lest this season, do both. Sorted.

Realistically, I would do what we did for parts of the first half of the season. Send the fringe players away and play a stronger spine in the home games.

You missed that one Sean .... I said EVEN the press, bit of a difference to 'The press are talking us up".
