Settle an argument

how sami came into a shambolic defense and turned it into one of the meanest in europe was nothing short of incredible. fast forward 10 years where last minute he is called into the biggest game of the season (manu) and then gives a masterclass against some of the best forwards in the world. top three greastest ever liverpool CB imho.

One of my favourite pics ever.

Gah, damn you Ryan!

One of my favourite players ever and a true Liverpool legend. He deserved a league winners medal.

Best defender? Carra as he can play well over all 4 positions and versatility is an underrated quality. Best CH? Sami by a mile. Still hate to think of him playing in Germany when he could still be here. And Damn you Ryan for posting that pic!

Best CH: Sami

Best RB: Carra

Best LB: Carra

2-1 to Carra. Game over.

No, it isn't. Sami played DM as well as CB in Holland, and his threat to the opposition's goal wasn't just in the air, as Juve and others found to their cost.

I've always liked Carra and was one of the few who defended him on KT when he was a bit-part player with us, but there's only one winner of this match-up and that's the Flying Finn.

Hyypiä for me. Not just because Carragher was a disaster as rb before converting to cb but because Hyypiä was/is one of the best.

Absolute fucking shit.
[/quote]

Hmm...ok, not a disaster but he wasn´t very good. Ok?

This is one of the two things that I see on various LFC forums - the other being the argument that everything good is done by Benitez and everything bad, well the evil Parry did that - which never fails to annoy me, the assumption that Carragher was somehow saved by the arrival of Saint Benitez and that he was really awful before.

He wasn't at all. Carragher played something like 300 games for us before he started being played regularly (by Houllier incidently) at centre back. Do you rack up that many games by 'not being very good'?

We get this talk now of how Sami came in and improved the dodgy defence. This is true but Carragher was also a fixture in that defence and deserves just as much credit.

They are both wonderful defenders, two of the best we have ever had and I would find it virtually impossible to choose between them.

Over the course of a season, Sami.

In the last 10 minutes of a cup match or anything of importance Carra; he'd die for this club on the pitch.

That

Sami's got more to his overall game but Carra's presence has easily won us more points and trophies over the years.

Carra was part of the defence which badly needed Sami. He was ordinary at best - especially at CB - until the Treble season when, as a last resort because we were short, Houllier stuck him at LB and he began to show what he can do. That's why he never nailed down a regular spot in those days. It was indeed Rafa and his coaching staff who turned Carra into the top-notch CB he's become these past few years.

I think it's quite clear that Rafa has played a big part in Carra becoming the player he is today.

From the official LFC site:

"Despite this, he was part of the England squad for the 2004 European Championships in Holland and Belgium. Disappointingly, he played no part, but the following season was to be a career-defining one for Liverpool's No.23.

While Carra had always been a first-team regular at Anfield, he'd somehow struggled to get the recognition he deserved. Each new signing was seen as a threat to his place, and the Kop had yet to reveal its dream of a team of Carraghers.

The arrival of new boss Rafa Benitez changed all this, with the Scouser getting the permanent centre-back slot he'd always craved.

Carra was soon being labelled the most underrated defender in the country.

BTW Leverkusen are unbeaten in the Bundesliga and they're in the top (sharing first place). They've only conceded three goals. Sami has played every league game (4 games played, 3 wins 1 draw).

Had a quick look in a Leverkusen forum and surprise, surprise, he's getting rave reviews.

it's not a surprise at all is it? dare I say if we had him available for spurs and villa we'd have got point in both games seeing as it was set pieces that hurt us rather than individual skill.

They do like him, don't they? Think all their Christmases have come at once.

It's a measure of the man that we're all chuffed for him, despite the fact that we could really have done with him this season.

Sami will come back to the club to coach I would say.
He looks like one of the few to enjoy a 'decent' relationship with the gaffer.

Sami Hyypia update:

Leverkusen still joint leader in the Bundesliga (2nd by goal difference).
Still undefeated.
Conceded the least amount of goals.
Sami Hyypia being called a world class player by fans and journalists.

A terrible translation from a German newspaper:

Big, strong, Hyypiä
28.9.2009

"No man, no animal, the number four," said colleague as a week ago with no ill intent at this point. Did not mean it, my quad this world. The Four stands for format. There are so many good. The filigree Frankfurt Maik Franz for example, or (self-) scorer Nikolce Noveski from FSV Mainz. Sami Hyypia is also justly proud of his bib.

"It would not have been good for me to come with another team to Anfield," said the Finn after his move into the Rhineland. For ten years he had put his bone in Liverpool, because of his uncompromising-fitting work he is performing at the River Mersey as a legend.

The Four: A myth. And now: Leverkusen.
While accelerating Hyypiä not quite as fast as his 620 hp Ferrari strong, his positional play is still a class. Even his free shots had a goal enthuses CEO Wolfgang wooden houses from 1.93 meters long, Hyypiä. A man like a tree that can look forward to a quiet Saturday afternoon. Finally, the next opponent recently played without striker. Correct: Bayer expects zero-Four in five days of Nuremberg.
