how sami came into a shambolic defense and turned it into one of the meanest in europe was nothing short of incredible. fast forward 10 years where last minute he is called into the biggest game of the season (manu) and then gives a masterclass against some of the best forwards in the world. top three greastest ever liverpool CB imho.

Best defender? Carra as he can play well over all 4 positions and versatility is an underrated quality. Best CH? Sami by a mile. Still hate to think of him playing in Germany when he could still be here. And Damn you Ryan for posting that pic!

No, it isn't. Sami played DM as well as CB in Holland, and his threat to the opposition's goal wasn't just in the air, as Juve and others found to their cost.

I've always liked Carra and was one of the few who defended him on KT when he was a bit-part player with us, but there's only one winner of this match-up and that's the Flying Finn.

This is one of the two things that I see on various LFC forums - the other being the argument that everything good is done by Benitez and everything bad, well the evil Parry did that - which never fails to annoy me, the assumption that Carragher was somehow saved by the arrival of Saint Benitez and that he was really awful before.

He wasn't at all. Carragher played something like 300 games for us before he started being played regularly (by Houllier incidently) at centre back. Do you rack up that many games by 'not being very good'?

We get this talk now of how Sami came in and improved the dodgy defence. This is true but Carragher was also a fixture in that defence and deserves just as much credit.

They are both wonderful defenders, two of the best we have ever had and I would find it virtually impossible to choose between them.

Carra was part of the defence which badly needed Sami. He was ordinary at best - especially at CB - until the Treble season when, as a last resort because we were short, Houllier stuck him at LB and he began to show what he can do. That's why he never nailed down a regular spot in those days. It was indeed Rafa and his coaching staff who turned Carra into the top-notch CB he's become these past few years.
 
I think it's quite clear that Rafa has played a big part in Carra becoming the player he is today.

From the official LFC site:

it's not a surprise at all is it? dare I say if we had him available for spurs and villa we'd have got point in both games seeing as it was set pieces that hurt us rather than individual skill.

They do like him, don't they? Think all their Christmases have come at once.

It's a measure of the man that we're all chuffed for him, despite the fact that we could really have done with him this season.
 
Sami will come back to the club to coach I would say.
He looks like one of the few to enjoy a 'decent' relationship with the gaffer.
