I'm having a discussion with another Liverpool fan about who the better defender is Carra or Hyypia.

IMO Hyypia is head and shoulders above Carragher, even today.

My friend says that Carra is more versatile and a better tackler, and some other stuff but I can't listen to his drivel.

So...

Such different players that it's hard to answer that question in a vaccum...

Sami's probably the "better" footballer, but Carra has that indefatigable will to win, which is hard to discount. They're both legends who deserve to be mentioned amoung the great defenders to ever represent us

If the question is "Who would you pick?", my answer would be that it depends completely on their proposed partner.

Hyypia. He was a rock for 10 years!

Carra nailed down a place as a Cb after he turned 26 and has been thoroughly solid for 5 years, but he was never as good as the big man.

Over the course of a season, Sami.

In the last 10 minutes of a cup match or anything of importance Carra; he'd die for this club on the pitch.

Hyypia by a distance for me

Carra's a great defender dont get me wrong, but at his peak Hyypia was genuine world class -great defender, great organiser, fine passer, great in the air at both ends, huge physical presence, hardly ever booked or injured. The perfect defender, one of the best buys of the past 2 decades. he deserved a league title

i miss sami :'(

Sami would be on the bench for my version of the Liverpool Greatest Ever Team (Jocky Hansen and Brenda Lawrenson have to be in the side). Carra, for all his excellence in recent years, would not. He's become a very fine player as his career has progressed, but Sami always was.

* is worried*

Is this guy sitting next to you right now ? In your bedroom ? Just the two of you ?

Sami Hyypia : No doubt about it - An icon of modern day liverpool.

We used to concede from set pieces by the bucket before he came. And looks we are doing it immediately after he left :-[

You're discussing who the better defender is currently? Who would you rather have in your defence for the next match? Carra for me.

If you're discussing who will be judged the better defender when we look back on their careers it's a tough call. There's been a huge swell of positive feeling about Sami in the wake of his leaving. Obviously Sami is a legend but I have a feeling that in a few years, when their Liverpool careers can be judged in their entirety, Carra may edge it.

I think the 3 people I would have liked to see lift a league title before they retired for us are/were Fowler, Sami, Gerrard.

Sami was a fucking excellent defender.

Difficult to judge and possibly unfair to do so at the moment. Carra has started poorly this season and is not marshalling the defense well, at times he looks panicked and charges to defend a ball when his partner is better placed to do so or indeed actually in the process of doing so.... thats just the first four games this season.

Is Carra a legend? Definitely.

In fact i would go as far as to say he is in fact under-rated not over-rated, his commitment and never say die attitude has pulled us out of many fires, every team needs a carra. He will do so again this season when he picks up his game again, i have no doubt. If you are talking about a player willing to literally throw himself in the way when you really really need it it is Carra.

If only Agger showed the same commitment and attitude as Carra he would be one of the best defenders in the world in quick time.

To knock Carra misses the point and is unjustified and it is unfair. Alongside his genuine football heroics, which we have all seen throughout the years, he has also quietly been one of the best defenders in the league for many years.

All of that seemingly contradictory sentiment aside, Hyypia was the better footballer.

Without question.

To be far though, if we're wanting players to show the same commitment and attitude as carra we'll be waiting a long time. That's his greatest strength, and I think sheer force of will often makes up for any tecnical deficiencies that carra may have.

Does Agger really have a bit of an attitude problem you reckon? I know he's got a bit of an ego, though i don't mind that so much since most top players do, and he sometimes seems a bit relaxed, but i figured that's just his style. My main problem is that he's just so breakable, and the constant absences are happening at a time when his game really should be developing. if Agger had been able to play a couple of seasons for us without an enforced break, I think we'd be talking about him as one of the very best out there. You do worry though that the constant injuries might mean he could end up as one of those 'what could have been' players

I honestly could not choose. But I do think Carra's recent drop in form has sullied him in the eyes of many on here. He is a wonderful, wonderful defender.

Anyway, take a look at this and tell me you don't fall in love with the man all over again.

Hyypiä for me. Not just because Carragher was a disaster as rb before converting to cb but because Hyypiä was/is one of the best.
