Thats a touch unfair. You guys have given out about England and its fans often enought to expect some of us to have a laugh at your expense nnow.

It's harsh on the likes of Ireland (although I must admit that Mors wind-up campaign has been a little amusing) no question about it... but the Liverpool CL case just goes to show that when things work out in your favour, you're less inclined to question whether they're justified.

Haven't got the mental energy to go through the pages that followed this, so apologies if my point has already been raised:

That's a completely different situation.

UEFA had always assumed that a CL winner would perform well enough in their domestic league to qualify for the following season's tournament (which was a reasonable assumption, I think) and so never built in a rule saying that the winners automatically got to defend their crown.

Then we came along. And they rightly changed the rule, because you must allow the holders to defend their title (imho). I didn't agree with the change because it suited our needs, but because it was the right thing to do.

This "lets make it easier on the best teams" change of plans doesn't right any wrong, or correct a potential injustice... It simply makes it easier for the big team (the ones who shouldn't need ay help) to qualify.

Totally different.
 
Changing the rules midway through a competition to suit bigger nations is unfair. Noone can argue that.

I dont dislike England ingeneral and like watching them at times but I do admit to finding it funny when they fail but only because of the way the English media hype them up as unbeatable and favourites to win every major tournament there is. Thats what makes me laugh. *runs*

But "at our expense" in this case is nothing to do with football matches or even fan behaviour...

This Ireland - England thing is a vicious cycle... Most of us do NOT dislike England or the English people. And, when we look for you lot to lose (which, secretly, many of us don't want to see until deep into the tournament), it's not from a "we hate you" perspective, it's from a "we can have a giggle at a neighbour's" expense one.

Problem is, there's always enough knob'eds on BOTH sides that such bollocks is spouted, that before too long, even the most rational of us feel our national pride start to prickle and have to fight the desire to jump in.

I'd much rather talk about Liverpool, to be honest.

I actually quite like that analogy! Plus it gets back to the whole theme of the thread.

On the other hand, it was clear from the start that Mors was trying to wind people up and I found it quite amusing!

Oh and one last thing England had plenty of chances to try beat Ireland between 1985 and 1995, and couldn't manage it once ;-)
