Liverpool transfers It's over Coates: Liverpool ready to sell Sebastian Coates to Brazilians Gremio

Liverpool flop Sebastian Coates is a £7million target for Brazilian club Gremio – but it gives Kop boss Brendan Rodgers a transfer headache, writes the Sunday People.

The wealthy Samba outfit want to sign Uruguayan centre-half Coates and take him away from his Anfield misery.

But while the Reds would happily sell disappointing Coates for such a big sum, they face a problem over the timing of the deal.

Gremio can sign Coates AFTER the European window shuts as their deadlines are different – and that is a problem for the Anfield club.

Rodgers would want to spend the money to find a replacement – with Swansea’s Ashley Williams a big target – but his bosses are anxious.

If Liverpool sign Coates’ replacement before selling him it puts them in a poor negotiating position.
So they will ask Gremio for a concrete bid in the next 72 hours.

The defender had been hoping a switch to Juventus would materialise after the Italian giants wanted to loan him for the rest of the season.

He said: “I’m going through a complicated moment here at Liverpool.

“I want to play for the Uruguayan national team and I must play for my team to achieve that.

“I do know the other defenders are playing really well and I must wait my chance. But, again, I want to play now.”

I don't understand what's happening here - is it that Coates isn't good (he seemed excellent in many of his appearances last year) or is there something wrong (as a few posters have brought up here, and on other sites)?

He's young and could be world class for many many years.

I'm really confused by this decision unless obviously there's something up.

Yeah I dont get why he hasnt been given a chance here. Maybe hes just not used to the physicality here?

I'll tell you what's up. Being fourth choice after Carra. That's what's up.

I think he's a good player.
Given the choice, I'd love to see a big, quick, defender that's a beast in the air.
We look so vulnerable when facing pacey attackers.
I know the likes of Hyppia could compensate for the lack of pace but that's the exception to the norm for me.
The better defences in the league over the last few years was Terry with Carvalho (quick) and Vidic Ferdinand (quick).
Our defence had Hyppia and Carra, and Carra wasn't ultra quick but he was certainly quicker in the first 5 yards than Agger and Skrtel.

Carra's been good when called upon, so no big deal for the club.
And I don't think that's what's up at all. He wants to play. Simple as that. How many minutes has Carra had all season as 3rd choice? Not a lot.
Coates wants to play where he's first choice.

Of course he wants to be first choice, who doesn't? But, being third is a start.
Why aren't we rotating our CB's like Man U, City etc? OK injuries play a part, but like I mentioned in another thread, he should have played against aerially strong teams like West Ham and Stoke.

If Ferdinand and Vidic were healthy (and younger) they'd be playing close to every single game. As they did when they were indeed healthy.
How many of the most successful centerback pairings over the years have been regularly rotated?

Coates has a chance to play for his country, and being 3rd choice CB won't allow him to do that. He's at an age now where he's not super young, neither is he well established. He needs games. Let's not turn this into a Carra thread.

Rotation does't have to be regular. Players have different skill sets. Line ups are often chosen to counter the opposing players threats. I agree that you usually don't see CB's being rotated, but in our case we have two first choice defenders who have trouble against big players. Coates did well against Man C for instance. When we needed to defend against West Ham he was brought on in the end.
OK, I don't want to make it a Carra thread, but this isn't about Carra being a legend it's about a promising defender being in the stands while a 34 year old is on the bench.

It used to be the case that 20 - 23 year old players wait their fucking turn and time and then go on to a first team berth for years.
Nowadays every cunt wants to leave if they arent in the first team.
We actually have one of the better defences in the league and after some early season shenanigans Agger and Skrtel are looking much more settled (and Carra has been really good in the games he has played) Coates needs to fucking sit down and wait.

Obviously if the club dont rate him thats different, and if Mr Rodgers doesnt see him in the picture we may as well get good money for him.
I dont everly disagree to be honest, he seems to have one whopper of a mistake in him every game. That said he is young and could develop.

I agree with Oncy. He's done nothing to displace Skrtel and Agger and so needs to wait and fight for his place. Coates wasn't bought to go straight into the first team, he hasn't earned it, and so shouldn't be playing for us (in the league at least). That said, he needs games to develop and so if we believe in him, he should be loaned out and should have been before now.

What concerns me is a link for another Swansea player. I know Williams had a half decent game the other day, but is he really that good? Is he better than Skrtel, for example, because if he's not then there is no point buying him.

If this happens, then we should try and bring someone like Subotic or Hummels, who can potentially relegate Skittles or Agger to the bench.

There is obviously something that we dont know about in this case, as Rodgers doesnt seem to rate him and he doesnt get games.

7 mill is a decent fee for him and I'd love us to go for someone like Howedes.

Coates may well be shit and not suited for this league. But let's not get away from the fact we have been leaking goals ALL season.

I'd like to think we could sell Coates with the emergence of Wisdom, and with Kelly coming back from injury. Get an old experienced guy in on a short-term deal as a replacement.

He doesn't seem to have the fight or reading of the game to counteract his lack of pace - which makes him a liability in the English game from time to time.

Carragher made up for lack of pace by determination & Hypia by reading the game so well.

Coates looks all over the place.

Mind you - Skrtle needs someone to constantly marshal him as well.

£90m on Carroll, Henderson, Adam, Downing, Enrique, and Coates.

That's starting to look like really questionable business.
