I think he's great.
Scores goals, works hard & is a positive role model on and off the pitch.
However, I think his (I'm assuming) burning desire to be one of the world's greats will hurt this team.
Today - again - there were many times where he could have passed but wanted to do it all by himself.
We saw it far too many times this year.
I'm no really sure if there's a way around this as Mane continues his ascension at our club.

It's upto Klopp to have a word with him. Mind you he has 8 assists to his name.

Yah but I feel his selfishness let the team down far too often - I know he wants to be the best, and I respect that ... but not if it costs the team anything ... and I think today was further proof of him being overly eager to get goals ahead of his teammates (though he did celebrate Mane's goal)

He is selfish at times but it's an important part of his game, has to be able to take those shots on that at the right moment. Immense responsibility, those goals against Southampton and Chelsea were fantastic, each in their own way.
Player wanting to be one of the world's great at LFC is never a bad thing, everyone was happy with Suarez being a total selfish driven cunt.
Salah's had plenty of assists this season and has given a lot to the team, he was a bit pants today was excellent against Barca 1st leg so don't really see the issue but understand the selfish stick about Salah is gaining momentum.

Suarez was the best player on the team bar none - when he was near his game, we won ... when he wasn't, we struggled.
Salah is part of fantastic, dynamic attacking trio ... So when Mane or Bobby, or one of our MFs (Like Hendo today on the break in the 2nd half) should get the ball, he should pass it ... Far too often this season, he missed opportunities. I didn't notice this last year mind you (or maybe he just scored almost everything for almost half a season!

I don't agree. I agree he does look selfish at times.

However let's think back, did he look selfish in the season before, when he scored 44?

Yeah, he fucking did, but nobody cared cos he scored 7, 8 or even 9 times out of 10.

This season he's regressed to the mean, I know nobody likes the xG stat, but he was performing much higher than xG & is now hitting more like the expected levels for a top class forward, as opposed to an elite level (messi/Ronaldo forward).

As such he's still going for the same chances he went for last season, but he's not finishing nearly as many, so we automatically think he should have passed. Truth is if he didn't believe he could score every time he shot he wouldn't be joint top scorer.

I can't remember any occasion where its been blatantly obvious that we have someone in a much better position & he's refused to pass, I feel like they're always chances where it looks like the pass could be a better option, but not definitively so, & sometimes when we're screaming for him to pass he'll shoot & score.

Has his missed opportunities cost us? I don't remember anything related to selfishness that has cost has games or points this season but could be wrong but then we have been awesome in general this year 🙂

I agree LTW.

I am just glad we didn't win a last minute penalty.

It would have been anarchy. Mane and Salah trying to wrestle it off each other. Milner standing there looking like a mug in the background. Klopp not having a clue what to do.

I know what you’re saying LTW, but it’s a bit too early for me to be criticising him after today. If that makes any sense.

This thread is all set for Salah being clean through on goal to win the champions League final in the 89th minute only to square for Gini to score the winner

He's a top striker. Name one top striker in history or current that is not a bit selfish .. and that also racks up the assists he does. We can all pick out instances where he should have passed, as we could for all strikers. 97 points and a CL final says he's not doing much wrong.

I agree LTW. It’s not really about those occasions where we might be 2 on 1 and Salah decides to shoot instead of pass. That is fine for the most part. It’s part of his game. As is going for glory from long range when given space. That’s fine too and we get to see goals like the one against Chelsea for it.
But there are many occasions where he tries to take on 5 players instead of making the simple pass that would help progress play. That’s my issue with him.
Great player, glad we have him, but if he wants to be one of the best he’s being counter productive with his selfishness.

Some valid points there J - but I feel that even if he was scoring, I'd be worried as I don't see these tendencies from Mane (Bobby is the provider more often than not)

We have been awesome - I'm not complaining about the team.

Yah that thought crossed my mind ...

Fully understand, but I think many of us have said it throughout the 2nd half of the season ... I am not saying 'sell' or anything, I just think to be the best team possible, Mo has to also understand it's ok to not be the best goalscoring winger outside of Messi ...

Yup.

Totally agree, he has been irritating me with this all season. If we go one up he turns into 'need a goal' Mo too quickly and it often seems to be detrimental how we got that first goal.

That being said it probably hasn't had a negative effect on results, except possibly on our goal difference, and it's hard to argue with a golden boot winner.

Yeah. With all the shit and lack of spirit and leadership we se en this season a last minutes penalty was the last thing we needed. Cunts all over the place....

I dunno, I find this an odd criticism. I've definitely found myself shouting at the telly when he doesn't make certain passes, but I would not want him to change his game because of it.

I honestly think that if you watched Messi and Ronaldo every 90min for a whole season and applied the same standard, you'd have to reach the same conclusion.

It's the best sort of selfish really.

When was the last time Messi or Ronaldo didn't score 40+ league goals?
He's not at that level - and cannot be judged the same way. We also don't rely as heavily on Salah as their respective clubs relied on them, when they play ... They are the focal point of their attack, while Salah isn't of ours all the time (as it moves around based on the game).

Had to laugh at Klopp when interviewed. Was told Salah, Mane and Aubameyang were joint top scorers. "Auba", says Klopp, interviewer confirms, "Ah, all my players then", says Klopp ha ha.

I wonder if it's just a case of selfishness, or if it may be due to the fact that he's missed more chances than he did last season (even while sharing the Golden Boot!) and is trying too hard to compensate, rather than simply "letting the force be with him" as he did in 2017/18.

Still not convinced personally. There were a bunch of moments this season when I was crying out for him to pass but he just went and scored instead. What's to say we would have scored those if he passed?

I don't mind having one goal hungry player in a team this good, and seeing as he has just directly contributed to 30 league goals, I'm happy to let him keep at it.

Sure, there were those moments ... those were not as many imo as the other way round where his 'goal hungry' mentality hurt us.
I'll ask a question - is Mane 'goal hungry'? Is he selfish sometimes? Sure for both ... but do fans mention either?

There were definitely moments this season when Mo was chasing a goal, whether it was to break a "dry spell", or prove last season wasn't a one off, or win the golden boot, or whatever. He felt the pressure to be the main man with goals again, and you're right that it sometimes made him poorer for it.

I don't think it hurt us though, and personally, I just don't want Mo to try to change anything.

That's the thing though - he doesn't have to be the main man! 🙂 It's like with City, Aguero AND Sterling (and sometimes Raheem) ... We're a better team when all 3 are not focused on being the 'main man' - and this wasn't happening every game but there were some games, especially during his dry spell where this was very evident. As I doubt we'll see 40 goals next year - and more likely a 25-30 goal season, which is great, I just think (or hope) that he works as if the goals are flowing ... as we're a far far more dangerous team that way.

I saw Salah try and take the pen off Millie against Cardiff, when we were chasing the league, just so he could add to his numbers. It was selfish.

In a nothing game against Wolves, 2-0 up, last minute, with Auba still playing for the boot, you don't think it would have been a little "difficult"?
