This needs to be discussed. Anyone else concerned about Rodgers' inability in the transfer market?
Even today, Alberto and Aspas can't get a start against the might of Bournemouth.
Looking at the list of names who Rodgers has signed does not paint a pretty picture.

• Fabio Borini: £10,400,000

• Joe Allen: £15,000,000

• Oussama Assaidi: £2,400,000

• Nuri Sahin: Loan

• Samed Yesil: £1,000,000

• Daniel Sturridge: £12,000,000

• Philippe Coutinho: £8,600,000

• Luis Alberto: £6,800,000

• Iago Aspas: £7,500,000

• Simon Mignolet: £10,000,000.

• Kolo Toure: Free.

• Aly Cissokho: Loan.

• Tiago Ilori: £7,000,000

• Mamadou Sakho: £15,000,000

• Victor Moses: Loan

A LOT of wasted money there. Does anyone actually feel confident about Rodgers spending money on new players?

Well, Sakho, Allen and Ilori could still come good. And Mignolet might regain his form. So this may be a bit premature.

Borini, Aspas and Alberto are the really big question marks. Aspas and Alberto were weird signings from the go, which is a problem.

Think we will recoup what we paid for Assaidi though.

I wonder if the money used to buy Alberto, Aspas and Ilori could be used to buy one first teamer.

Both Ilori and Alberto were strange signings. I thought we had players in our reserves who could contribute as much as those 2, c.f. Texeira and Wisdom.

What Aspas, Alberto and others need are games in the reserves. The fact that the reserve system provides so few matches means it's incredibly hard to get any new players to adapt to the game here. If they struggle in the first team at first it doesn't always mean they're absolutely shite, but there's precious little opportunity for them to find any form outside of that arena.

Anyway, I don't see 'a lot' of wasted money there. Coutinhi and Sturridge were brilliant buys. Sakho will flourish once he's settled. Ilori is a fantastic prospect, a real gem. Borini is a smart player who'll come back improved. Toure has proven to be a much better signing than I ever expected. And as I said, if a few of the others can get the opportunities to develop (and I don't see the first team as serving such players, that's what the ressies should do), the list will look pretty good IMHO. And it's no good sneering about the 'mighty Bournemouth' when the first team struggled against them - that isn't any argument for why the reserves should have played them - quite the contrary.

Well technically they can play in the reserve games I think. I am just wondering if we really needed to buy them when we still had Borini, Assiadi, Ibe and Texeira, We also let Robinson and Wisdom go on loan when they could possibly do a better job than Cissokho.

Rodgers is saved by Sturridge, the emergence of Sterling and the memory of Coutinho when he was great in his first six months. It's looking really dodgy otherwise.

We'll make a loss on Borini when we sell him I'm sure.

We probably paid 1M or something to get Moses on loan, which despite his performance today is still looking like a waste. Hopefully Cissokho truly was free wages aside because he's shocking.

Alberto and Aspas. I want to be positive but right now it looks like a 15M write off... certainly as far this season goes.

And the 6M on Illori also seems like a luxury. Hopefully he ends up in the team over the next 12 months.

I don't know about Ilori. Those who've watched him are absolutely raving about him. If he's a generational talent, then 7 million is well worth the investment.

Will we be able to develop him is the question. I'm glad we've committed to getting him some first team action this season. I really hope that we give him opportunities in our first team next season though. There's an opportunity there with him. Agger might be sold. Toure is pretty much a reserve, and Sakho and Skrtel are the only clear first choices. He should be targetting replacing Skrtel in that first team, and I hope we give him the requisite chance to do so. There is fuck all point spending big money on young talent, if you don't give them enough playing time.

If we had great players clamouring to sign for us there'd be more question marks. But we clearly don't. So the market is a minefield for us anyway.

I feel like this thread comes up once a fortnight or so.

Yes some are questionable, no he isn't awful, yes he's been unlucky some, no he's not perfect.

On the balance, not bad, not great.

There's not much development needed. He's very mature and he'll thrive.

i don't think we had a great window last summer , we bought for areas i didn't think needed most addressing and none of them have added much to the team so far . My hope though is that we bought for these positions as we couldn't get the likes of the armenian or willian and that it will all come together in a window or two when we hopefully have more pulling power . I'd be lying if i said i was confident though .

It's decisions like buying Aspas when you've sent Borini on loan that baffles.
Selling Shelvey for 6 million, and spending the same on a player at the exact same level of development in Alberto was completely insane.

What sense does that kind of deal make? And then you give him even lesser opportunity to play than you did with Shelvey.

Quite a lot of savings to the salary pot.

Rodgers is obviously saving up this January window so we can spend big in the summer, loaning out players for experience so that they can come back and start a fresh title assault for next season. It's all part of the 5 year plan in his dossier yo!

Agree with Macca. I think Rodgers has done well for us in a difficult market. Our loan signings have not worked out, there does not seem a lot of need for Aspas - but that's hindsight. Every manager can be criticized with that. I don't look at any of those transfer fees and wince. Maybe some are a little inflated, but never horrendously so.

A combined £26,000,000 for Carroll, Adam and Downing still astounds me. I'm surprised we were able to get more than £26.
