André Wisdom is currently captain of the England Under-21 team. I don't remember him having a bad game for Liverpool so I would certainly hang on to him and see how he gets on.
It's hard to know what to do with Wisdom, he never has a bad game but he rarely shines. I've seen him 5 or 6 times for Derby and he's incredibly consistent defensively but rarely offer a threat in the opposition half. He's gives a 7.5/10 performance wek-in-week-out but I'm not convinced he's ever going to be a top level defender. The Derby fans like him but are very undecided whether or not they should buy him if they get promoted. I think he'll end up being a very consistent performer in the EPL but for a team in the lower reaches of the league.

I think if Derby offered us £3m-£4m for him we should consider it and maybe buy Micah Richards for £6m-£7m. They are very similar players but I think Richards is stronger, quicker and better in the air.

Maybe we could do with a defender who is incredibly consistent defensively. 🙂

The thing with Wisdom that bothers me is why he's not being played at centre half. I remember Rodgers even openly saying he saw him more as a right back than a central defender. If that's the case then I don't see a lot of hope for him, because he's never going to be an outstanding full back.

On the other hand, he looks ideal for centre half, and he's played there all through his youth days and as captain of the England u21 team. I really think he might be good there for us. And yet it seems he might never get the chance.

Baffling.

For a CB he isn't the tallest. Might that be the reason?

The Richards link is interesting. He's got lots of ability - more than Wisdom IMHO - but hasn't made it count consistently, maybe because of occasional trouble off the field. On the face of it he could be a classic Moneyball signing.

I think it's a simple process with Wisdom - and I think CB is where he'll ultimately end up.

Absolutely no question - we should not be selling him.

The only question is would or be better to put him in the first team mix right now - will he offer genuine competition at RB or CB.

If the answer is no - he goes out on loan again - he's proven he's good enough to hold down a place in a decent championship side - can he do it at a low-level premier league team.

Sign Caulker & if we play this right Sakho, Caulker, Wisdom & Illori will sort us out for CB's for the guts of a decade.

Squawka is making the case for Andre Wisdom here:

It's very difficult for young defenders to get a break in central defence and so they get given a go as fullbacks. Wisdom is not going to get a run of games as a CB for us and probably won't for any other Premiership team at the moment. If that's where he's going to end up, it's going to either be a case of continuing as fullback for the time being and hoping to get a shot in the middle at some point or finding a lesser team in a lower division that will gamble on him.

Either way, I think he is best served by playing his football elsewhere next season.

He's 6'1, so should be tall enough really. Agger's proper tall and he's shit in the air, so it's not all about height anyway.

I'd be more inclined to take a gamble on Richards if he had a better injury record.

If we buy Richards - which I'm absolutely fine with - then we HAVE to keep Johnson otherwise we need to sign another RB.

Couldn't agree more but his incredible consistency this season has been at Championship level and I would have thought he might have stood out at that level rather than just show consistency. Having said that there have been plenty of players in the past who don't shine at the lower levels but are effective nonetheless and perform similarly when promotoed the the EPL.

I'm undecided about Wisdom and it might be worth giving him a shot next season but my gut feeling is he will end up being a solid mid-table defender for someone like Villa or Stoke.

Mirallas tore Wisdom a new arsehole in the derby at Goodson 2 seasons ago, the one where we got robbed by that twat of a linesman in the last minute.

All part of the learning process though, we should definately keep him and see if hes up to it.

He's not a right back though, that much is obvious to everyone, he looks good bringing the ball out from the back and is a big commanding figure, but his ability with the ball at his feet in tight situations and on the turn leaves alot to be desired, I think he'll progress to be at the very least a decent centre half. He looks like one, I never really understood people saying the same of Kelly.

Liverpool FC have no plans to offer Glen Johnson a new contract this summer – but they aren’t preparing to sell the defender.

The England right-back is down to the final 12 months of the lucrative deal he penned back in 2011.

Boss Brendan Rodgers said in March that starting negotiations over an extension would be “a priority” during the close season but the ECHO understands that Liverpool are now in no rush to sort out his future.

The Reds are prepared to retain Johnson’s services for next season and run the risk of losing him on a free transfer in 2015. By then he will be nearly 31 and have little sell-on value anyway.

Johnson’s form was erratic for most of the campaign and he didn’t come close to justifying his £110,000 per week salary which makes him one of the club’s highest earners.

Anfield officials believe he has done little to merit the security of a new deal but they don’t intend to off-load him.

Selling Johnson could raise £3million to £4million but Liverpool believe having invested so much in him since his £18million switch from Portsmouth in 2009 they would be better off keeping him for 2014/15 rather than having to splash out on a replacement.

Rodgers will need greater strength in depth to cope with the added demands of Champions League football and knows Johnson’s experience could be important.

Glen Johnson in action during a training session

The Reds’ approach to Johnson is also influenced by the terms of the contract he penned when Damien Comolli was director of football in July 2011. There is a significant reduction in his basic wage during the final year of his deal.

There is a feeling inside Anfield that Johnson is better when he has something to fight for and the hope is that coming back in pre-season without a contract on the table should focus his mind.

Thats the thing though, is it obvious? hes never played a senior game at centre back has he?

Not arguing whether he is or isn't but if its blatent that hes centre back then why doesn't he get some games there?, fwiw thought he done a decent job at right back for us apart from the Goodison game where he was up against a good player bang on form.

He has, but in a back three maybe a couple of times last season. Can't remember if he was the right side or central CB for that, probably the former.

As for the earlier comment about Mirallas - to be fair, Mirallas would've torn the arse off a number of specialist full backs; he's a skilful and pacy player and is a really tough matchup for defenders.

I know, pretty much said the same thing, its just when there was mention of him never having a bad game, that game immediatly sprung to mind because he was destroyed so it stuck out.

Fair enough on him playing centre back in the 3, couldn't remember it, would be handy to see him play in a normal centre back role so we can judge but it feels like he will be another Kelly in that respect and we will be waiting and waiting and waiting.

Aspas £4m
Assaidi £4m
Agger £8m
Borini £6m
Lucas £5m
Reina £4m
Luis Alberto £4m
Kelly £500k
Coady £1m
Coates £2m
Wisdom £1m
Robinson £250-500k

It was against a bunch of part timers, we shouldn't make a big deal of it.
Kelly also fucked up big time close to the end of the 2nd half

It wasn't just me then? I thought positionally he was all over the place, he was like that when he used to play right back too.

To be fair to him, he's not the first young centre back to be eased in at fullback (or even defensive mid), it happens regularly to get them used to the pace of the game, without being thrown straight into the centre of defense. Look at Carragher and Phil Jones for example.

The transfer season always brings a lot of internal conflict for me.

Agger and Lucas have the attitudes we wish for in our favourite players. No one mentions the hypocrisy of crying about lack of loyalty from Suarez and Torres and Mascher, while simultaneously waving away players who love our club because they 'aren't good enough'.

At their best, they are both great footballers. Of course they have had plenty of time to find consistency but for various reasons both seem to now be past their best.

I wonder how much the club tests the affinity and comfort of players like them. I think they should both be on the market and if a decent enough offer comes in we should give them the choice of going or accepting a reduced role in the squad and a wage cut that reflects it.
