Jose Antonio Reyes might have to choose which Merseyside club to join, as Everton and Liverpool battle for his services.

Reyes is searching for a club after Benfica offered just €4 million to make his loan deal permanent, while Atletico Madrid are keen to generate a higher sum for his sale.

Now, FourFourTwo reports that Everton and Liverpool are considering bringing Reyes back to England. The Spaniard previously spent three seasons at Arsenal and failed to settle, despite showing occasional flashes of brilliance.

In addition to Atleti and Benfica, Reyes also spent a season at Real Madrid, but he has never quite found the form that made him such a sought-after player at Sevilla.

However, the Merseyside duo would face a challenge in convincing Reyes to return to England, as by all accounts he failed to adapt to the country during his first stint.

Just bollocks probably, but oh well...

442 & New Football Pools are all made up bollocks. Daily, new players are listed as players we are 'interested' in or targets we are after, along with plans to sell half our team.

Reyes doesn't like the EPL anyway.

Reyes ... what a fucking waste of talent he turned out to be.

Should never have left Sevilla.

Did he hate it, or did he hate it because Real were knocking?

His first season at the Arse was a decent one, from what i remember he only became shit once he was trying to get his deal.

£23m or something wasnt it? Arsene's a bastard for that one, and Anelka.

He looked excellent when he first arrived, and if anyone managed to nurture the talent he undoubtedly has, then they'd have a fine player. Unfortunately, Rafa ain't the man to rehabilitate a winged bird (as it were). That would not be his forte at all.

As an aside, an awful lot was made of his inability to settle being down to the fact that he is a Gypsy. Surely he should be into the 'wherever I lay my hat that's my home' philosophy if he fitted with the racial stereotype then?

I thought Reyes' being unsettled had more to do with the fact that he never really wanted to leave Spain in the first place. His first quoted words on British soil were to say how cold it was here. There's no question he's a talented player, but I'd forever be wondering if there was going to be a re-run of his previous escape back to The Lying Rag.

Reyes at times oozes class, and it's understandable why Wenger took the plunge on him, but he and everyone else quickly learned his mentality is very, very weak, which is something Benitez places great importance upon.

It's a non-starter.

The story goes that he hated the weather, food and lifestyle in London, and struggled badly with the language. I believe he moved his whole family over here with him.

To be fair he was a young lad and very poorly educated. Apparently he could barely read or write before he signed for Seville, so he had basically been brought up there. So moving to London would have been a big change.

It was suggested by a few that we might have suited him better and I can see that a bit. A smaller city, lots of Spanish people around the club. Although if he didn't like the weather in London I dread to think what he would make of the weather on Merseyside!
He might have been worth a go at one point though I rather suspect that his previous experience at Arsenal has put him off England now.

There's always the agent factor, sniffing out another pay day. Especially when they're family.

Ain't that the truth. We'll never know for certain, but I can't help wondering whether the kind of reasons which are claimed to lie behind Xabi's discontent (for example) could have been dealt with more easily if it weren't for some parasite of an agent whispering in his client's lughole.

I read somewhere that A.Madrid might be wanting rid of Maxi also after an unimpressive season and a bad attitude.

Skill but no bottle. Saw him versus Utd once where Dot Cotton cropped him and Taggart called him a queer and he hid the rest of the game. No thanks.

With the right coach and the right motivation I think he can be a great player for us I mean he's only 25.
