Retiring numbers in football

It doesn't occur that frequently in the world of football as it does in prominent American sports.
Napoli retired the number 10 shirt for obvious reasons.
Ajax did the same with the number 14 shirt.

Which Liverpool shirt number would you consider retiring?

The number 7 shirt would be the obvious choice, but not for me.

I'm actually looking at the guy who has spent his entire career at Liverpool and is probably the best player who has ever donned the red shirt. Number 8.

Must also mention that I'm not really in favour of retiring shirt numbers.

None, for me. You can understand it in Napoli's case, but for us it would just open a can of worms thinking who is worthy and who isn't. I want somebody else to wear the #8 shirt when the time comes and play well enough to do it justice.

exactly

I wouldn't retire any shirt numbers. Some players would be inspired by wearing the same number as their boyhood hero.

If Gerrard wins the league and continues to play for another 2/3 years he's be the first player I'd accept retiring a shirt number for

I'd go the other way.

1 to 11 numbers for the first team. 12+ for the subs. Any squad players rotated in get the sub numbers.

So your goalkeeper is always 1 or 12, for example.

Proper old fashioned, but way better imo than all these stupid fucking numbers.

When Gerrard retires I'd hope nobody gets his number until they prove themselves first.
Agree with the sentiment but it took us 25 years to finally find a worthy successor to the number 7 shirt.
It would basically mean retiring the number 8 shirt if we want our replacement to be anywhere near as good as possibly the greatest player to ever play for us.

I know what yoy mean. Obviously no use waiting for someone as good as that may never happen. But I'd rather the shirt numbets were earned rather than given to some no mark. It doesn't have to be a legend in the making, just not an Aspas.

We have had so many quality players at this club is we where to start retiring numbers we would have none left to give out to the old school starting eleven

When Kewell took on number 7 they should have retired him instead.

There's always the danger of somebody coming in that does the number disservice but if we cut them out what's there left for the young ones to aspire to.

Do we have a number 23 at the moment? I don't think we have, do we?

Not that I'm saying we should officially retire the shirt, it's a stupid idea, but there's a reasonable chance we just won't allocate another 23 anyway.
