Liverpool are being linked with a fresh move for Napoli midfielder and Slovakian captain Marek Hamsik.

According to givemefootball.com, reports in Italy are suggesting that Roy Hodgson may look to revive interest in the the 23 year old who was first linked with a move to Anfield under Rafa Benitez.

The website believes however that the sizeable transfer fee that Napoli would demand for the player will prove to be a major stumbling block in any move. Hamsik scored 12 goals in all competitions last season, taking his total to 33 in his 116 appearances for Napoli during his three seasons at the club.

He was named runner-up in Slovakia's footballer of the year last year and was also named the young player of the year. He captained his country during his first World Cup in South Africa this summer.

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

What sort of player is he? I didn't see much of Slovakia at the World Cup.

He can play as a CM in a 4-4-2. He likes to play a slightly attacking role like Gerrard/Nedved. He has a good touch and good technical ability, and can pick a pass. He has the discipline to play a deeper role, but he probably needs another player along-side to win the balls in the mid field against the better teams. Him and Gerrard as CMs in a 4-4-2 will work against the lesser sides like a treat.

I can say for certain though, that he will score more goals than Xabi Alonso did for us.

I would wait for Roopy to give a more detailed opinion. He seems to follow an awful lot of Italian football...

I like him,but we've got attacking midfielders coming out of our ears. We need a holding midfielder with plenty of bite in the tackle, and hopefully, good distribution skills.

These are my thoughts too. He sounds like a good player from Julian's description but we need a player who can play in a midfield two without assistance, since none of our other midfielders can.

Was this the guy with the really spiked up tall hair?

Yes. I was quite disappointed with him in the WC, he played quite well against Italy but was anonymous in their other 3 games.

Wow, that is lazy journalism. Same Benitez was interested now Roy will be aswell.

A very interesting thing though, is that the Belgian media say Roy will attend Standard Lieges match tonight and check out Defour himself.

According to Rory Smith Roy is a big admirer of Defour. Box to box midfielder in the Roy Keane mould.

Sell Mascher and buy him and we're sorted.

didnt Hamsik have a HUGE sum lumped on his head by Napoli when clubs when sniffing last year??

Defour or Hamsik and ill be happy

I watched him at the world cup, and ive seen him a few times in the serie a. He is more of a CM that can attack well and also defend. He is nothing like Mascherano, if anything more of an alonso type of player with more of an attacking threat than a deep lying playmaker like alonso. Eitherway id be delighted if we can get him

Yup, would love him here instead of Lucas.

But we still need a Mascher type as well.

We already have Aquilani and Cole who are basically the same type of players. This story can't be true.
But I rate Hamsik.

It would be stupid unless we are either planning on not playing with a defensive midfielder and playing gerrard/hamsik as the 2 CM in a 4-4-2, or unless we were flogging off aquilani and getting hamsik as a replacement.

Got a feeling we are stuck with lucas tho 🙁

Lucas will do alright for us this year when called upon. He's a tidy enough defensive midfielder.

Half of the problem last year was playing Lucas and Masher in midfield together, something everyone could see bar Rafa.

Pair him (when needed) with Gerrard/another attacking midfielder and we'd be fine in most games.

Just to be clear, we need a Masher replacement (perhaps with a more rounded game), but I don't see Lucas playing there as a complete disaster.

Won't happen.

De Laurentis will never sell him cheap - which rules us out straight away.

And also Hamsik is friends with the Naples mafia, so he's bit of a king where he is.

Lucas dont have the strengths to carry our midfield. He is not strong enough defensively and he is catastrophic at distributing the ball. It is a dream for other teams to have to defend agaisnt CM like him.

I should have clarified further when i said he is like Gerrard/Nedved.

He is more like the Gerrard that played alongside Hamman and the Nedved that played alongside Davids at Juventus....i.e Box to Box. The player that we all hoped Lucas was going to be, when we spent 7 million GBP on a 19 year old. He is not a 'trequartista/no -10' kinda player.

If Napoli is willing to do a Aquilani Hamsik swap - we should be all over that.

Yeah he is a CM rather than a floaty AM with no real position.

Whenever I've bought him on FM as my great midfield hope, he's always failed miserably. Damn you Hamsik!
