The most important issue with the VAR system is that
the referee is not consistently instructed to consult the video review. To see the video replay of the situation while on the pitch. Instead, the referee is sometimes instructed to do that and sometimes not. And the reasons the referees are sometimes instructed to conduct a video review and sometimes instructed not to do it
are hidden. And those decisions are made by individuals who are also not on the pitch and who are, therefore,
also hidden from the viewing public. And those individuals probably have earphones in their ears so that it is
still somebody else who is directing their actions by providing momentary and immediate instructions, interpretations and opinions straight into their ears.
This Nunez situation was I think not reviewed by the referee. If the referee was instructed to review this situation then I think he
would have to give a penalty. But the referee was not instructed to do so. That is how the game of football is currently run. There are many critical on-field situations that can be determined by outside actors. This situation could have easily been a penalty. And it should've been a penalty. But it wasn't. And this situation wasn't a penalty because somebody refused to instruct the referee to make a video review. And because somebody has instead instructed the referee that the VAR review has been completed and that there is no need for him to do a video review.
That
foul on Jota from the last league game is another good example of the same thing. That was a similar situation to the one that happened in the Arsenal game this weekend. Yet, in the Arsenal game the situation was reviewed by the referee and the referee changed the yellow card into red. In the Liverpool game, the referee was not given an opportunity to review the foul on Jota. Same situation, sometimes the referee is directed to review and sometimes he is not.
And nobody knows the reason why. Hence you get different outcomes. That allows for much greater opportunities for individuals who are outside of the pitch to control game outcomes. Bias comes into that. As does open cheating.
