Rafa wants to sign Reina

It's honestly a bad move. You can't take out Carra and Pepe in the same season, suarez too and expect us to make the top 4. That's too much experience at the back. And too many goals. Is it maaaaaaaaaadness?

Carra wasn't a part of the long term plan anyways(and he took himself out in fairness), but Reina has been a liability for years now.

We'll be fine.

Well, we've been 7th or worse for 3 years in a row with them in the team.

So I'm prepared to take the gamble.

Meh. Pepe's been poor to average for a good 3 years now and has reportedly been angling for a move away for a few years so i'll not be shedding any tears over this.

Still been a great servant of course. Wish him well.

Great keeper in his day but his form dipped a lot these last few seasons. Beaten too many times at the near post and his distribution wasn't the high standard we'd come to expect of him. Just a shame he wasn't able to get a rousing send off.

At his best Pepe was phenomenal and for the first few seasons he was arguably one of the 2 best keepers in the world (along with Casillas).

About 2 seasons ago I mentioned that IMO he was almost ready to be crowned LFC's greatest ever keeper but unfortunately his dip in form over the last 2 seasons means that I still consider Ray Clemence as our No.1 No.1.

I think way too many people never appreciated just how good he was, much like they didnt spot the decline until this season. (And then said it was three years long)

I'm glad he's going after playing a season, I wouldn't like to see him on the bench for us. It would tarnish things a bit for me

I liked Reina, and certainly have concerns about replacing him with Mignolet. I understand that we're saving a lot on wages, but I still think Pepe is one of the best keepers in the league, and looked to be finding a bit of form again at the back end of last season. And Mignolet wouldn't be the first keeper to record some good stats at a team that get's pummelled with shots every week, before fading into obscurity.

I think we need to give him the best chance possible of settling into the role, by fielding a strong, consistent back line. That's something Pepe would no doubt have benefited from over the last few years, too.

finishing 7th is necessarily their fault. It's throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Clubs that finish in the top 4, have usually gelled over at least a season.

I'm not sure you can take that level of experience out of a back four and expect to finish in the top 4.

2 trophies is really gut wrenching considering what a brilliant keeper he was for us.

From SSN:

Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Reina have passed medicals at Napoli and will be presented to the ambitious Serie A club's fans on Monday night, according to president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Real Madrid striker Higuain, 25, is on the verge of signing a reported five-year contract at the Stadio San Paolo for a 40million euro (£34.5million) fee while Liverpool goalkeeper Reina, 30, prepares to reunite with his former Reds manager Rafael Benitez on a season-long loan deal.
The duo were pictured heading for medicals at Rome's Villa Stuart sport clinic and Azzurri president De Laurentiis has now taken to Twitter to confirm a successful outcome for both players.

Through his official account, he wrote: "Higuain and Reina have passed their medicals and will soon join the rest of the group.
"On Monday there will be a big party at the San Paolo. You will be able to get to know the new players and the new shirts."

Should the moves go through, Higuain and Reina could appear for Napoli against Arsenal in next month's Emirates Cup.
The pre-season event is being hosted by the Gunners, who have been strongly linked with a move for the Argentinian striker this summer, on the weekend of August 3-4. Porto and Galatasaray will also contest the mini-tournament.

A report published on Gazzetta.it showed Higuain, who has scored 107 league goals in six seasons with Real, wearing a Napoli scarf while being mobbed at Rome's Fiumicino airport.

Meanwhile, Reina's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon told Gazzetta.it: "He's happy to reunite with Benitez because he's known him for over five years from their time in Spain and England, and they worked very well together."

MASSIVE blow. Shades of Xabi all over. 6 months time you will all be begging to have him back (in this regard a loan move might be shrewd).

In Xabi's case, we never got anybody better to replace him. It was one of Benitez' worst fuck-ups. In Pepe's case, we have signed Mignolet, whom I think we will find is a better keeper and will not cost us points as Reina did last season.
