Rafa wants to sign Reina

MASSIVE blow. Shades of Xabi all over. 6 months time you will all be begging to have him back (in this regard a loan move might be shrewd).
We sold Xabi when he was 27, and in his prime. We also tried replacing him with a combination of Lucas, Aquilani, Mascherano, Poulsen, Spearing and Adam.

We're letting Reina go when he's 31, and well past his prime. We're also replacing him with a 24 year old full international, who has been one of the better keepers in the league over the last two seasons.

Mignolet might not meet the lofty standards set by Reina in his prime, but I think we will get a fairly consistent and hopefully error-free keeper for the next 4-5 years.

So I don't reckon this is comparable to the Xabi situation at all.

In Xabi's case, we never got anybody better to replace him. It was one of Benitez' worst fuck-ups. In Pepe's case, we have signed Mignolet, whom I think we will find is a better keeper and will not cost us points as Reina did last season.

I'm not expecting Mignolet to come in and eclipse Pepe straight away, and I think any that are might be disappointed. What's more, I think Pepe's accountability for our relatively poor finish last season has been grossly exaggerated.

I do hope you're right, though.

Looks as though Alan Sugar has done a side deal with the woman who came second in 'The Apprentice'.

Reina at 31 well past his prime? You make him sound like a 40 yr old. Reina has been excellent, people think he has not been good because the defence before him have been shocking and we have not replaced players like Xabi, torres and mascher. Reina remains class and saved our bacon countless times by pulling world class saves out of no where.

As for Mignolet - it's relatively easy for an average keeper to look good playing for a shit club who have to defend all the time. Stepping up and playing for liverpool, when there will be less action in your third, but this will demand more concentration is a totally different matter. Mignolet is completely untested at this level.

There is a reason Reina is spanish number 2 and one of the highly regarded keepers in Europe.

Short memories and all.

Oh where to begin ...

Reina cost us quite a few points last year with errors where he was lacking in concentration - something you claim is part of 'stepping up for Liverpool.' He had a very poor 1st half, and was generally excellent in the 2nd half.

If you're calling him excellent based on his first few years, I'd say 100% agree. If you're calling him excellent based on the last few years, I'd say you've not been watching Liverpool much.

You make it seem as if Mignloet is some small time goalie - he shares time with Courtois (you know, the highest rated young goalie in the world - and the best goalie in La Liga last year) as Belgium's starting goalie ... 13 caps at the age of 24 ain't bad for a keeper ...

I'd say Reina is #2 for Spain based more on reputation than form - then again, so is the #1 keeper (Casillas, who barely played for half a season under Mourinho!)..

This move helps both sides. We're saving a shit load on his weekly salary, and bringing in a young, hungry international who may be ready to take his game up to the next level ... you know, like that 20 something goalie we bought from Villareal. I remember someone wrote something along the lines it was relatively easy for him to look good playing for an average La Liga club who have left him watching most games with their footy. People didn't think he could step up and play for liverpool, when there is always less action in your third, and demands more concentration. They were right, Reina was completely untested at this level ... he turned out ok.

He was the best I've seen live in red in his prime but for once we have done very well in a position of replacing an aging player with a hungry young up and coming one

Going by Rodgers comments about the transfer situation today, its quite clear that Pepe and his agent informed the club that a bid from Barca would be coming and that he wanted to go. We then signed Mignolet and planned ahead, Pepes move didnt materialize due to Valdes staying and he then was told he would be nr 2 behind Mignolet resulting in the Napoli loan.

Imho obviously.

And if he doesn't want to go?

Balls to your common sense sheiky... I dunno....Kidnap his kids maybe.... lower the price!!

I don't bloody know Sheik I just think its bad for us financially to loan him... personally I didn't want him shipped out in the first place and think the talk of his being "past it" was somewhat over-egged but fuck it.... nobody listens to me anyway...

I think he's good enough to be sold if you follow my logic.

It's worse financially to have him sitting on our bench for a season while he waits for his transfer to Barcelona next summer.

How can saving 5M quid be bad for the club?

I started falling out of love with Pepe not because of his drop in form, but because I felt his drop in form was perhaps related to his lack of belief in the club, and when he intimated he was too good for the club, and it would be difficult to say no to Utd. This is when the c**t was dropping points for us through errors that were no-one's fault but his. He was a great keeper in his pomp, but I'm not crying he's going. Cheerio.
