Rafa wants to sign Reina

Reina is getting the Xabi treatment.

He didnt underperform, that implies he could have done more than he did - which I don't agree with. Keepers like him who rely on agility don't get better as they hit 30 - the ones that can carry on are the taller leaner ones usually.

He was still very good - he just wasn't amazing like in the past (when most didn't really appreciate just how fucking great he was)

He's the best I've ever seen play for us but he was at his peak when he arrived.

So you never watched our Ray then ?

Personally I really don't believe it. Napoli have 124m Euros to spend. Why on earth would we loan out a player of his quality ?

Because if he has a half decent season, Barcelona and Napoli could very realistically have a bidding war over him next summer.

Napoli signed a 23 yr old Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael from Santos for €5 million a week ago. Might be a stop gap for both Napoli and Reina.

bingo. us fans can be so fickle. in 6 months time we will all be saying why did we let reina go and he was amazing for us. utd struggled for years to repalce schmeichal, we will also struggle to replace reina.

Reinas best attributtes when he joined were reaction saves and distribution

His agility isn't as good because he's older

His distribution for the last 2 years has been a mixed bag.

I really like pepe. He's a fucking Don, but god Damn it sentimentality has held us back for a while.

I'd rather get a fee for him now and get the wages off our books obvs.
But hopefully this loan deal will result in him keeping his value up in terms of good performances and we'll get about 7-8 mill for him next year from Barca. Instead of sitting on the bench for a year, earning 110k a week and seeing his value decrease. Its the next best option imho.

He's been saying for the past months that a return to Barca would be great but I'm guessing Valdes decision to stay postponed that for a year.

Oh, and I hate dealing with Italian clubs. Bar Coutinho we've been buttfucked every time.

We've already replaced him, time will tell if Mignolet is a good keeper, but we've done our work early and hopefully made the right choice. I don't know why you have to draw parallels with United and be so predictably glass half full, we're not United, Reina's not Schmeichal.

Mignolet is actually a very decent keeper. People are just butthurt that a favourite is going to make way for him

I for one love the fact we got a Belgium international

I think he'll surprise a few people about his quality. I hope for his sake that he gets off to a good start or people will start questioning the loan deal very quickly.

I don't always refer to utd, but we're liverpool and our barometer needs to be the best (which we were for a long time), would you rather I refer to stoke and west ham for comfort?

Back to Reina - we've spent 9m on a position which is not a priority, we could end up saving 4-5m on wages, but still we have spent money on a position where we have someone who is excellent. For all we know this money could end up being the difference between us seeking our top target or a 2nd rate one.

As for Mignolet, I obviuolsy hope he does well, but the point is I can't see him being an improvement on Reina, he will be lucky if he matches Reina.

It’s reported Napoli have a deal with Liverpool for Pepe Reina after Julio Cesar’s agent explained he “won’t take a pay cut.”

The Partenopei are on the look-out for a prestigious goalkeeper, as Morgan De Sanctis is said to be close to Roma.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Napoli reached an agreement with Liverpool to take Reina on loan for next season, possibly with an option to buy for €10m, so he can reunite with Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard is expected to fly out to Naples over the next 24 hours for a medical.

He was their second choice and negotiations only intensified after Julio Cesar’s agent revealed there were problems for the QPR and former Inter shot-stopper.

“There are still details missing from the negotiations with Napoli, as we haven’t yet agreed on wages,” Josias Cardoso told Radio CRC.

“Their proposal was too far away from what he currently earns at QPR and we already did them a favour by not asking for a raise.

“We are talking about a goalkeeper who has returned to the level he was at when winning the Treble with Inter. He doesn’t want to take a pay cut, as he could easily have demanded an increase and did not do that.”

With Cesar on £90k/wk and judging by these comments, I'd think Reina is either taking a pay cut to join them or we will be subsidizing part of the wages?

If he's going then we haven't strengthened the goalkeeping position at all, we've probably weakened it. Ward is actually even weaker than Gulacsi. I know it's difficult when you're always being pressured into talking to the media but Rodgers needs to learn to say less and less. All of that 'Me and Pepe spoke last season and he's happy about all of this' now looks even sillier as it sounded at the time.

I agree to an extent, but if Rodgers was asked about him, i'd rather him try and convey pepe was happy with the decision, rather than drive the price down.

But we have weakened ourselves, mainly because i haven't actually seen Ward play,

Well, I suspect Rodgers and Reina did speak and that they were both 'happy' that Reina was going to leave.

I'm not particularly happy about Reina leaving - especially not on loan as it would seem plausible that we're going to be paying some of his wages. I hope this Mignolet guy lives up to his billing (and price tag).

Players from unfashionable clubs tend to get a cool reception. Mignolet was fantastic for Sunderland last season. He's a keeper on the way up, and Pepe is a keeper on the way down. I'm sure the change will be worth points next season,

This is costing us, what, 14m this season to save 2.5m every season?
That fits with a conspiracy theory about them selling the club in the near future...

Yes, I'm not having a go at Rodgers but less is more ought to be the motto now. As for Ward he's years off playing for any first team.

If Napoli are paying all his wages then I can understand the thinking but if we're not then it's a bit of a pointless move. Makes Rogers statement we signed Mingolet for competition look a bit daft though.

@TonyBarretTimes: Reina talks ongoing between Napoli & #LFC. A loan deal has been agreed but Napoli also exploring the possibility of a permanent transfer.

A loan deal is nonsense for all concerned.

We've bought a replacement already so its bloody obvious we don't want him back, he's consistently won the golden glove award so is hardly likely to improve his reputation over the next season, will be a year older and have 12 months less left on his contract. And we could do with the money now for other positions.

If we are getting rid, which I personally think is a mistake, I'd rather 7m in hand now and him off the wages bill than hold out for an unlikely 12m say in a years time.

Agreed. I think both player and team wanted out, but I'm still sad to see him go, even though his best seems behind him. He has been absolutely phenomenal at times.

Oh he's gone, Rodgers has admitted it's financial reasons why he's going, he wouldn't do that if he weren't going.

TonyBarretTimes (Tony Barrett)

Rodgers: “Financially it is something we needed to look at,” he said. “Because obviously otherwise you wouldn’t move on a top goalkeeper."

Rodgers seemed pretty certain Pepe was staying a few weeks ago so what's changed since then??
