Purslow's to blame, says Rafa

Rafael Benítez has blamed Liverpool's managing director, Christian Purslow, for his departure from Anfield and the club's financial problems for last season's dramatic downturn on the pitch.

The former Liverpool manager accepted a severance payment worth up to £6m to leave Anfield this month, following a miserable campaign that yielded a seventh-place finish in the Premier League and saw the club drop out of the Champions League for the first time in six years.

Benítez endured a fraught relationship with Liverpool's co-owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, during his final years at Anfield and the pair tried to replace him as manager with Jürgen Klinsmann. However, the new Internazionale coach said the man responsible for his exit was Purslow, who joined Liverpool in June last year and is now overseeing the search for the Spaniard's successor as manager.

"It was really sad," Benítez said when discussing his departure in an interview with Radio City today. "I was on holiday so it was a surprise that everything was going on in this way, but at the end of the day it has to be like this because Christian Purslow is now in charge and he decided to do it in this way. That is it. It is really sad but you have to move forwards. I said to my family that we cannot stay talking too much or complain too much; we have to move forwards.

"The people of Liverpool are fighters and I was fighting from the beginning until the end. Now I have to do the same and I have to be thinking about the future. I was really pleased here, the fans were amazing, but I can't stand around complaining. I have to move forward and do my best for my new club." Liverpool declined to comment.

Roy Hodgson is expected to become the club's next manager once the terms of his departure from Fulham and contract at Anfield have been resolved, but Benítez said the problems of last season will not be eradicated simply by his exit. "It's strange. This year everything changed from the beginning," he said.

"People in the club changed and the approach to everything was different. Clearly it was a question in the beginning of controlling the money we could spend or not, and everything was different to the past. We were so close to winning the title the year before that everybody was expecting something more but we couldn't do it. We had some problems from the beginning with injuries and some performances, and there was a little bit of frustration. At the end the atmosphere was different and we can see now during the summer that the fans are not very happy."

Benítez kept open the possibility of a return to Merseyside, insisting he has no plans to sell his house in Wirral. He added: "I can guarantee one thing – I will not sell my house. It is our home and we will come back. I don't know when but we will come back for sure.

RAWK is going to have to phone their host providers and get ensure the additional bandwidth doesn't bring down the site.

Posted a few months ago that I was told Purslow and Rafa hated each other. I guess this little name drop was to make life a bit more difficult for him.

Wow..ammo for all the purslow haters.

Does this confirm he is an RBS appointment?

Somehow I get the feeling that the Americans will be happy to see Purslow leave as well...

Despite that article's opening sentence I can't actually see where Rafa blames Purslow for the financial stringency imposed on him. He clearly blames Purslow for being a prime mover in the decision to let him go, but his later words about the finance restrictions don't seem to me even to hint at Purslow being similarly central to that side of things. Doesn't mean that's not what Rafa thought, but there's no suggestion of it in what's quoted here.

Why do you think that ?

It appears from the outside that he's doing a very good job. Rafa not getting on with his boss is hardly a first, it's pretty much part of the process for him.

The snake hasn't had such a bad press since the garden of eden.

This interview was on Rawk last night, they were going a wee bit mental over it.
[/quote]

How could you tell?

Benitez can get fucked. Why say this? What's the point?

If you gave a Rawkmental they're one to wish, to be locked in a room with Benitez for 24 hours, even they would end up tearing their hair out.

Rafael Benitez does not get along with anybody he works with, and he uses the fans as a means to get this information across. Problem is, many of them aren't bright enough to spot it.

Surely Purslow didnt want Rafa to waste another £20M. Rightly so.

Rafa on blaming everyone else but him shocker...

I agree with you on Rafa not getting on with his boss. He has got pretty much 100% form here. His fallout with his Valencia boss', Parry, Purslow, G&H,...etc.

I am of course speculating heavily, and could be way off. I get this feeling that Purslow's only interest is to effect change in ownership and he will stop at nothing till he sees that end. Hence the fallout with Rafa, H&G(again speculating).

At this point i'm at a loss to see what is good for the club and what is bad. I guess we will know...

Agree to an extent, but surely a change of ownership is something we can all agree we need?

As far as Purslow's interest is concerned, I think his remit is a bit wider than just getting the club sold. It has to be, because in order to achieve a sale he has to make sure the club remains in saleable condition and the massively improved sponsorship deal he's brought in with Standard Chartered, for example, is one pretty big step towards that.

Benitez is a twat.

Just fuck off and keep your gob shut.

oh...And enjoy the 6m quid that you did nothing to deserve.

I'm sure the various charities he donated large sums to, including HJC who got £96,000, feel the same way, Ro-land.

Twat.

Whoopdie fucking dooooo

96k out of 6M is fucking peanuts.

And fuck off yourself. Twat.

Stop acting the cunt Terrier. Benitez, ultimately, didn't do it footballing wise but he's shown great respect for Liverpool the city and supported a lot of local charities. You could show the guy some respect in return even if you thought he was inadequate. A twat he is not.

Do you think it's right him having a pot shot at the Management after he's gone, simply to stir up more problems?

It's bang out of order and is exactly why he's being a twat.

He's gone, got paid a King's ransom after getting sacked - and should show some respect and shut his gob.

This has nothing to do with charity donations and why it's even being mentioned is gormless.

What's the point of this? Rafa is gone and he is partly to blame for that because of a terrible season of pain.

What's done is done! Rafa obviously loves the club and the fans. Leave it at that!

Significant, yes. Very

Quite a lot of money, yes.

It's also 1.6% of what he took off us to walk away just a few days previous.

So, what is $96,000 as a percentage of $6,000,000 then Livvy?

Never been paid severence, mate. I've never done such a poor job that I've been asked to leave.
