Right, I've been working on this for ages and finally managed to come up with a table :

Net Spend 04 - 09 Purchased Sold Net Per Season

1 Manchester City £270,750,000 £66,900,000 £203,850,000 £33,975,000
2 Chelsea £267,950,000 £123,300,000 £144,650,000 £24,108,333
3 Liverpool £250,730,000 £134,080,000 £116,650,000 £19,441,667
4 Tottenham £301,000,000 £195,550,000 £105,450,000 £17,575,000
5 Sunderland £154,080,000 £62,650,000 £91,430,000 £15,238,333
6 Aston Villa £113,200,000 £37,255,000 £75,945,000 £12,657,500
9 BlueShite £92,100,500 £56,200,000 £35,900,500 £5,983,417
7 Manchester United £188,650,000 £161,050,000 £27,600,000 £4,600,000
8 West Ham £76,145,000 £56,325,000 £19,820,000 £3,303,333
10 Middlesbrough £62,200,000 £44,500,000 £17,700,000 £2,950,000
12 Newcastle £120,750,000 £106,400,000 £14,350,000 £2,391,667
11 Blackburn Rovers £46,052,000 £50,290,000 -£4,238,000 -£706,333
13 Portsmouth £85,200,000 £101,240,000 -£16,040,000 -£2,673,333
14 Arsenal £112,050,000 £138,320,000 -£26,270,000 -£4,378,333

Leeds United £5,900,000 £13,050,000 -£7,150,000 -£1,191,667

Doing this just after United have sold Ronaldo for £80m and reinvested only a fraction of it is a little misleading....

They'd be top of that list by a distance were it not for that.

Still makes interesting reading though.

So our net spend is just above that of Sunderland and Spurs. No wonder we are where we are then... ;D

And I agree with Del. Perhaps it needs updating at the end of the window? Sorry Ross.

PS does it include instalments? 😉

Even if they spend all the Ronaldo money they would still only be in 4th just behind us.

Splitting hairs at this stage. We have pretty much spent the same as them.

talksport were talking about this today, their figures were (roughly):

Rafa spent £250m Sold £132m Net Spent £118m which they reckon was 26m a year over his 4.5 years

They seemed to think rafa should have won the league with this, they used some really shit examples of his bad signings like Pennant who they neglected to mention was purchased along with Kuyt when we couldn't afford the players we wanted such as Dani Alves. Also mentioned as bad signings were Bellamy and Keane but in fairness to Rafa he can spot talent, if we had an extra few million we would already have Aguero for £16m and theres other examples I can't remember.

On sky sports the other day it was showing how City have around 200m buying a full team recently and they didn't even include Santa Cruz, this was the team:

Given
Bridge Lescott Toure Zabaleta
Bellamy DeJong Barry Robinho
Tevez Adebayor

We can't compete with spending any more, its clear the owners don't have the cash. I wish Rafa could have one Chelsea/Man city summer with about £100m

This exercise doesn't add in wage bills and is therefore inaccurate in terms of a clubs spending.

If this exercise was to show that transfer spending equates to expectation of success then Rafa is over-achieving as he's 3rd highest net spender (4th highest total spender) but finished 2nd, Ferguson has also over-achieved impressively and Arsene Wenger is the Messiah.

I conclude that it requires more than simple spending to create a successful team and crude financial measurements are just that: crude.

So we've spent a significant amount each year, and we've significantly improved as a team. Chelsea spent more all at once, and improved dramatically. Man U spent far more relative to us prior to this range, then barring Ronaldo, which is something of a jackpot, had to spend less to maintain a championship winning side. Wenger is fantastic at spotting talent. Man City are doing what Chelsea did a few years back.

Isn't this all common knowledge? What are we supposed to be glean from all this work exactly? What does this quantification of one part of one element of spending, really show us that we didn't already know?

The only unexpected thing for me, is exactly how shit Sunderland are.

According to www.lfchistory.net Rafa has signed/sold the following:

54 players signed for £228,066,000

63 sold for £144,825,000

Net spend £83.2mil

[/quote]

Great job Ross.

Actually there is then only around 1M p.a. difference between Rosco's figures and those of LFCHistory - easily accounted for by the lack of exact information regarding the actual fee for certain players.

For United you have to note that the Ronaldo sale is at a quite exceptional and highly unusual price.

Even without the Ronaldo sale, ManU net spent would be lower than ours.
It shows Ginsoak is the best manager in the league with 3 titles in 5 seasons
Only Mourinho could compete with him. Id be fuming if he takes the vacant post at Old Trafford when Ferguson retires.

If it's across a range of five years and the discrepancy is 30M+, how can the difference be 1M per annum?

Rage is so right. He the only one on here who speak any sense! I am top man, top manager, top person. You see my advert for Sky Sports? It good, no? It show my passion, it show me as top top dangerous guy. That clip of me tapping ball slightly over touchline? Ha! How many other manager would dare do such top top dangerous thing?! None of them! No wonder referee feel obliged to send me off. It was like Lenin! So Rage is right. I top top man for top top job. I will win things immediately. Of course there must be a strong established side waiting for me and an unlimited supply of money to buy more top top players, but Rage tells me this all in place, and I trust him. He seems almost as sensible as me.

come on even you must miss him from the premiership and if rafa fucks up another season he's as good as anyone out there.

rafa's had plenty of money to spend and is now in his 6th season and we look as bad as we ever have done under him.

the truth is painful. we've spent plenty of money yet our squad is awful and our first 11 has gaping holes in it.
