I'd rather pay 10mil for Bent than 10mil+ for some foreign no-mark who might make it over here.

Bent scores 10-15 goals a season playing for shit like Charlton and Spurs. He would do well for us. I don't see why he couldn't play one of our wide forward roles when needed either.
Totally agree with all that.
I'd agree if I knew anyone who's capable of both for £10Mish.

You're a woman - when's Colleen due? Maybe we can snatch up the next Rooney.
Is Colin haivng a baby?
for the last fucking time, Bent could not play the Riera or Benayoun role.
Since you've put together such an eloquent and well thought out post, I'm sure all of those who thought he could have now changed their minds.
Nonsense.

I could count the amount of times Torres has been 'rested' on one hand.
Phooey. You're forgetting both (a) his injury problems and (b) the number of domestic Cup games we'll be in for if we have the kind of season we all want to see.

The ideal player would be Anelka. I wish he was still at a shit club like Bolton.
is a good shout. if chelsea splash out big on a striker he might be surplus to requirments.

Yeah. Anelka or Henry would be ideal. And perhaps neither should be discounted, given the number of players their clubs seem to be in for at the moment.

Well atleast I've come to that conclusion from seeing the lad play, Anita. Something you've clearly not done to come to that conclusion.

Henry has always said he wouldn't play for another team in the Prem. Would he go back on his word?

I'd kinda like to think that he wouldn't.

Yes, clearly I've never seen him play and have based my posts on nothing.

Infact, why stop there HC? I've obviously never watched a game of football in my life.

Has he? I don't remember that. I remember him gushing in great detail about the atmosphere at Anfield and his man-love for Gerrard though.

Well you are a girl. You were probably fantasising about shoes when Spurs were on the telly last season.

I can't see either arriving, I'm afraid. The Chavs aren't likely to let Nico Anelka go even if they buy big, not after the season he's just had, and I can't see Henry accepting the no.2 slot we'd be offering.

Henry could play for us where he plays for Barca - ie left side of an attacking three. He could also deputise for Torres when necessary. That's why he'd be perfect. A lot depends on who Barca sign this summer: he might get squeezed out of the first team.

Yes because Anelka is renowned for his willingness to be part of a squad, be patient and act as a backup to other players isn't he?

Re: Wednesday's Gossip: Bent £10million

In fairness he was *so* good for Chelsea he forced the issue and they changed their set-up to accommodate him and Drogba.

Agree with your point, though: Anelka and Benitez wouldn't be a match made in heaven.

Didn't Spurs want Babel last season. It seems that would be a more than acceptable swap.
swaps hardly if ever happen so why do people mention them?

You're most welcome.

I think people are missing the point about the back up striker. We need someone good enough to replace Torres in the team as well as support him. We should get either a hot up and comer, someone like Negredo/Dzeko or get Villa. We want teams to look at our bench and think, 'Fuck'. Darren Bent isn't that striker.

Why do people think Bent would be in any way suited to a wide berth in a 4-2-3-1?
Seriously why?
I'm not being a dick, i just must have completely missed something in him over all the years of watching him perform in one position only. He's a fast over the top striker and a decent finisher. But he isnt a very good passer, isnt very aware, isnt very....at all creative. Hes a blunt instrument. I genuinely dont understand.
He wont come here.
We wont sign him.
He doesnt fit our needs.
Its just barmy. Why is it 5 pages?
Theoretically if we had 10m to spare and he was happy being second fiddle to the one and only position he could play in id be all for it. We dont, he wouldnt be, so im not.

Eloquently put, Hairy.

Nobody is 'missing the point'. People realise that we generally play one upfront, a position taken by arguably the greatest striker in the world, and finding a replacement who is prepared to bide his time isn't an easy task.

With all the money flying around David Villa is a pipe-dream. You speak of Dzeko and Negredo - have you seen either play 90 minutes? I find it unlikely as these names have only been flying around the forums this summer. Up until now, the majority of people hadn't heard of either. And even if are in a position to judge, you think they're the strikers who people will look at and think 'Fuck'?

People dreaming of superstar back-up strikers, like United have been blessed with, are ignoring our system of play and the reality of our budget, which needs to be prioritised towards the LW position.

Re: Wednesday's Gossip: Bent £10million

Only Anita thinks he can play out-wide

The majority of Bent's admirers see him as an adequate stand-in for Fernando Torres and someone who can double up as a partner on occasion.

Whether he'd tolerate that, I dunno
Ah ok. Anita is wrong. And the majority are right, he'd be a fine stand in. But i think you DO know he wouldnt tolerate that.

I think it's unlikely but certainly not beyond the realms of possibility, and I don't see many other names coming forward.

Maybe KopKing has a point; a young up'n'comer maybe the best not candidate, but should Torres spend so long on the sidelines again - something I know you're pessimistic about - I wouldn't want our title challenge to be over, and I think it would be with an inexperienced player.

I'd rather target a good player who's unhappy on the bench than an average 'lucky to be at Liverpool' shmuck.

With Bent I think the balance (and the fee) are about right.
Im not concerned because i think that Deadly has progressed enough to convince me that he can do a fine job nowadays. He was great last year, and he is my back up striker. Thats why Silva is perfect for me because he can cover for Riera and Kuyt.
Id rather spend all our cash on rm/lm

Bent is shite. Thankfully he wont be coming here.
Agreed......no more second rate spurs players please.
