Wednesday's Gossip: Bent £10million

I just think that the effectiveness is limited by the fact that our system requires the wide players to do a lot of midfield work.

I might be way off, but Bent strikes me as the sort of player that, like Torres, enjoys playing off the shoulder and running into space. If we're playing in a particularly open game, like the Villa game at Anfield last season, then maybe it'd be okay. Otherwise, I just kinda see him struggling. Even if you put the tactical requirements to one side, he doesn't have the technique or ability of the likes of Eto'o and Henry.

If he'd be willing to come sit on the bench and showed that he could be effective every other game, then it'd be a decent signing. Not sure that it is the case though.

I'm in favour of staying 4-2-3-1, too.

But there's no denying that with the singing of Johnson we're a more flexible outfit, because he'd be replaing Kuyt at RM who often lacked effectiveness when asked to play as a more traditional wide-man.

spot on. ideally we need a back up who is young and highly skillful and patient. playing upfront by yourself you need to have a bit of magic to create opportunitis for yourself and others

No striker, even Torres, is gonna score if your team can't get hold of the ball and play the striker into the game.

All strikers need service.

He got plenty at times last season and some of his finishing is woefull, even Spurs fans agree.
He might get better at another club but don't think he has enough for a top 4 side, better spending the money on another name.

Who are we gonna get that can be effective cover for Torres for £10million?

Not sure how mcuh we have but we shouldn't fall back into the habbit of buying average players because of the price, save the 10 million and put it towards a better striker. Bent's 1st touch is awfull, no way could he play up front by himself.

i liked the sound of that brazillian striker K9 we were linked with last year - he seemed to be a interesting prospect for a backup striker.

What 'better' striker is going to come to the club when we play with one upfront?

Everyone saw what happened to Robbie Keane.

It's not difficult to grasp.

Well, he's Brazilian, so he *must* be better than Bent, huh?

Exactly Squiggles! You'd think so wouldn't you. I just don't get what game people watch sometimes, seriously.

All I said was that I liked he sound of him. Would he be better than Bent, I don't know - but I know I don't like Bent. If K9 is developing along the lines that some speculated he would (vickery et all) then he is worth a close look. Wasn't he the player that Rafa bid for on transfer deadline and failed?

Whoever comes, has to be able to play that role. No point spending good money on a player just because hes available for the right price, can't start falling back into that old mentality. Just don't think Bent has the abilty required to play that role.

Providing Arbeloa stays, Johnson's the better candidate if we ever did play 4-4-2 - a formation we used more than most people realise.

It also frees up Dirk to compete for the striking position alongside back-up striker X (if we sign one)

In the 4-2-3-1 I agree, Dirk's untouchable at present.

Tell me, who's going to come to Liverpool to sit on the bench and watch Torres smash in goals week in, week out.

If your point wasn't horrendously flawed you'd be able to name quite a few players

So who's it going to be?

No one is suggesting just buying him because he's on the cheap, I happen to think he could be a good buy for us for the job he could do in the pitch.

whoever comes needs to be versatile and capale fo playing upfront by themselves and also challenge for the wide positions.

Re: Wednesday's Gossip: Bent £10million

Again, who?

Henry's the only one who ticks all the boxes.

Competing for the wider positions is an additional bonus but not a necessity, IMO. Not many strikers have the required physicality to play on their own upfront but also the pace and technique to play on the flanks

henry, tevez, and levazzi would seem to be the ones and possibly K9 🙂

would normaly agree but if our finances are not as good as people make out then we need to maximise our limited resources, especially as there is no point in splashng out big on a stirker who is second choice.

I think the competing to wider positions is important to give the player some playing time, rather than them just waiting for Torres to get injured.

I'd rather pay 10mil for Bent than 10mil+ for some foreign no-mark who might make it over here.

Bent scores 10-15 goals a season playing for shit like Charlton and Spurs. He would do well for us. I don't see why he couldn't play one of our wide forward roles when needed either.

We could even (shock horror) perhaps play 2 strikers at home once in a while.

I'd agree if I knew anyone who's capable of both for £10Mish.

You're a woman - when's Colleen due? Maybe we can snatch up the next Rooney.

for the last fucking time, Bent could not play the Riera or Benayoun role.

Sorry but your own premise is equally flawed. With the number of games we're likely to have to play, under Rafa the Rotator at that, Torres isn't going to play every week, even when fit. Bent or whoever we sign as no.2 striker will know they're in line to pay a fair number of games.

Re: Wednesday's Gossip: Bent £10million

Nonsense. I could count the amount of times Torres has been 'rested' on one hand. In the Prem and the CL he's an 'untouchable'.

Maybe Carling and FA cups, etc, but who's going to be caring about them next season?

Bent's more than good enough to feature in them anyway
