Post Match - Soton (H) - another draw

Unlike Rodgers, Klopp isn't complaining about what a shambles he took over, with all kinds of digs about the previous regime. He's classy and confident. It feels like a proper new start, positive and thoughtful, so even these draws are fascinating.

I feel the same way. And in a way I think it's oddly comforting that all three games have been kinda similar.

All top managers sort out the defensive spine/diamond first (keeper-CB-CB-DM).

Houllier's first few signings were Westerveld, Hyypia, Henchoz and Hamann. That spine (barring Westerveld) lasted years.

Rafa's first action was to sign Alonso and move Carra to CB. The Dudek/Reina-Hyypia-Carra-Alonso was the spine on which all of Rafa's success was built.

Klopp's done something similar - made Sakho first choice CB and the DM a default player. I reckon the Mignolet-Sakho-Skrtel-Lucas diamond will be an ever present this season.

I also think upgrading that spine will be a major priority in his first two transfer windows.

Interesting that Rodgers is not mentioned, above, and to my mind didn't go for that "stability first" approach.

You can only piss with the cock you've got.

The squad is unbalanced, the players aren't as good as we thought, we've bought expensively and badly, and our last 3 years have left us with no identifiable structure of style of play - so in essence we have a new manager trying to make a silk purse of out of a sow's ear.

It'll be 6-12 months before we're any good consistently, if at all. We'll have the odd good game, the odd run of results, and the odd moment where we look like we've got some sort of fucking clue what's happening, but for the time being it'll be down to hopefully winning matches through a moment of genius or luck.

We're a collection of all sorts, and we're pinning our hopes on one or two bits of those odd sorts hopefully being fit, and hopefully gelling.

Hope is not a strategy. We need one of those, and they takes time.

Get set for us being frustrating for some time folks.

Very true. For years our players have been making it up as they go along. The really successful teams develop a pattern of play, within which they learn to anticipate what their colleagues are going to do.

I came across an article today on potential candidates for the Villa job and, of course, Rodgers name came up. The writer said that at the least Rodgers would immediately give them a structure and style of play. I nearly shit myself laughing.

Exactly. It took Benitez 5 years to build a title challenging side. And it took probably about 18 months for us to start seeing a side in the proper Benitez mould and philosophy. For good managers like Klopp and Benitez who have very clear ideas about how their team should play, it takes ages building your side, with your tactics and vision.

For some reason this line made me think of Arsenal 2004. The interplay and understanding between that front 4 of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires and Ljunberg along with the 2 full backs was astounding.

And yet we can see that already from Klopp in just the first 3 games. That structure and players knowing where they are supposed to be and what they are supposed to be doing will only improve as the season progresses and the players adjust to the new regime. We'll see steady improvement throughout the season and the big strides will comes after the next couple of transfer windows.

Rafa built a title challenging side within 3 years ... it's that 5th year which went kerplunk.

Patience isn't a great commodity among our fans though, a few will be going berserk in no time. He needs time. All managers do.

The Dortmund fan was right, build from the back, get things stable and create a pivot at the root of the team that you can start to build around. It's clear we're a few players short of being up there, we need a bit of class in a few positions, so no amount of "hope" is going to overcome that overnight. Too many plodders and not enough players who can stamp their authority on the game.

There are also alot of young players who need to be nurtured a bit more. I understand the frustration at players like Moreno, Can, Ibe etc, but they're all kids being expected too much of, because we lack that genuine quality to supplement their development.

From a defensive point of view it is nice to see Moreno develop, I thought he was excellent yesterday apart from his execrable crossing and shooting. Sort that out on the training ground and we miht have a decent player on our hands.

I wish there was a few scousers in the side. I find myself laughing at them when they concede coz they're just a load of shit wools.

I am happy With what I see so far. I don't expect us to have everything in place in a couple of weeks, but I am happy to see we want to establish a balanced team, a different mentality and a platform to build on. Rodgers said he should be judged after Three years. I expect Klopp to have had time tro wrk With his team and settled Things within jan-Feb.

Another draw, immediately quelling any ridiculous notion that Klopp was more of a miracle-worker than a gifted football manager, and puts into perspective the required funds that FSG need to make available if we are to actually ever win something.

So much more work (and new players) needed. Southampton didn't show much ambition, really, but had better players in key positions

Mignolet (6). Looked far better of late, but typical flapping and lack of presence in his area contributed to the sloppy equaliser

Skrtel (7) Much improved display and battled well against Pelle.

Sakho (6) Terribly wayward start, in which is usual flaws looked obvious; bad decision-making and suicidal passing, but got better as game went on

Moreno (7) Love his pace and energy and he is now the first-choice LB. Needs to work on his crossing and end product though

Clyne (6) Very solid defensively, but even more wasteful than Moreno in attack, which is disappointing, especially at home.

Lucas (7) Kept it simple and made some great interceptions and tackles. We all know he needs replacing with better, but until then if he keeps up this standard we can wait until the next transfer window. Maybe.

Can (6) Sometimes seems to move and think in slow motion, but he is slowly improving in his best position, midfield.

Milner (6). Scrappy display but gets an extra point for the brilliant cross for Benteke. Gave away too many fouls, but can't fault his work rate and ability to get around the pitch

Lallana (5) I keep reading he's had a "new lease of life" under Klopp, but for all his possession and time on the ball, he produces very little. He's like that kid on the playground who can do all the tricks and flicks with a tennis ball, but is hopeless in an actual football match. Also has zero pace.

Coutinho (4). In a desperate run of poor form, not helped by having nobody making quick, intelligent runs for him to find.

Origi (3). A joke.

Subs: Benteke (7) What great goal. Need him to start

Didn't we think it would be a draw? So no surprise. Coutinho plays better with Sturridge. To play the way klopp wantswill take time but we do look harder to beat. We need a central midfielder that glues everything together, like Alonso did.

We could do worse than buy Alonso in Jan. Is he still starting regularly for Bayern?

Give Jurgen time to assess the Squad and see what he needs. He has been a couple of weeks in the job, and had more than enough preparing the team for games rather than coaching them on how he wants the team to play.

He's only 20, the way he played when he got a run-out or two in the last World Cup suggests he has a lot more potential than N'Gog (who wasn't that bad, just rather meh) and I doubt he'd be playing now but for injuries elsewhere in the squad. This is way previous to be getting on his case IMO.

Yeah I know.

I just wanted use the word 'Drawgen' somewhere.

[article]Jamie Carragher rued some "slow" football from Liverpool on Super Sunday - and believes the balance of the squad needs work.

Jurgen Klopp looked to be heading towards his first victory as Liverpool manager on Sunday until Sadio Mane's late equaliser cancelled out Christian Benteke's opener and earned Southampton a 1-1 draw.

The Reds again struggled to create clear chances on goal, managing just two shots on target and not posing much threat until the half-time introduction of Benteke.

"There is not enough being created," said Carragher on Super Sunday. "The football has not been quick and fast, it's been slow and predictable, they are not creating chances."

With the game goalless at half-time, Carragher said the Reds had been "playing like a church choir" and afterwards he highlighted one of their problem areas.

"There are no wide players in the squad, there is an abundance of No 10s. I don't know how the transfer committee thought they would fit them in," Carragher added.

"That is Jurgen Klopp's problem now. Maybe he will address that in January but there are four centre forwards and three or four No 10s and no wide players. There are some problems with that squad in terms of the quality and the balance."

Graeme Souness agreed with Carragher's assessment and thinks Klopp faces a "difficult job" to turn the club's fortunes around.

"The biggest problem is this is the group he's got," he said. "At Liverpool he will be given the time to get it right but it's not a quick fix.

"He'll know their limitations, the players are too samey. They all come towards the ball. It's a difficult job he's got on his hands.

"Will he get the players he wants at Christmas? I very much doubt it."

Christian Benteke came off the bench to give Liverpool the lead against Saints but Mane replied with a late equaliser.

The Reds have now drawn eight of their last nine games in all competitions and travel to Chelsea in the Premier League next weekend.

"Between now and Christmas it's about assessing what he (Klopp) has and hasn't got," said Souness. "The players that have arrived in recent history are not going to get too much in resale value so the owners have to put their hands in their pockets again."[/article]

Fair assessment and nothing that everyone didn't already know: a surfeit of one-paced players who like to occupy that attacking midfield role, and pick out the runs of speedy strikers, and not one genuine game-changing pace merchant at all, apart from Sturridge.

Buying Lallana was a massive mistake, especially at the hilarious price we paid, but we then went out and bought a similar player in Firmino, and somehow hoped it would all work out.

Horribly unbalanced and ordinary squad, and we need - and have done for years - a new goalkeeper, a new centre-half, a new defensive midfielder, a new attacking midfielder who can play wide and has pace, and another striker, because Studge is never fit, Danny is injured long-term and Origi is rubbish.
