Post Match - Aston Villa (H)

This is exactly the sort of shite that will happen when we big ourselves up for the title challenge after a few positive results.

I'm not gonna fall for that heartbreaking shit again and get myself all depressed when we begin to drop more points later at home, if we do, drop any.

Best way to approach everything - one game at a time and take it as it no more already is. Let's aim and SECURE that 4th place first. Anything more than that will be a bonus.

No more title challenge talk please - it's too painful to watch, especially knowing our uncanny history of cockups.

Has anyone here mentioned how the game turned around when Lucas came on?
It did. To be honest though I thought it was more of case moving Gerrard from that DM position and getting someone competent in there.

Definately, been reading a lot people saying about Man Utd and Chelsea drawing tommorow is what they want, fucking madness, all along it should be to get as far ahead of them and other 4th place rivals and if that leads us to the top of the league so be it but lets concentrate on 4th before anything else.

When he went off we lost a bit aswell.

You causing been trouble in the match thread Modo? checked it at half time and you weren't very popular in there lo.

Not really, some just can't handle the truth and feel insults is the way to go. When they get it back they start acting all high and mighty. Basically those who were most riled up were those who can't stand Lucas and feel the need to prove that we don't need him. I've stated it time and time again that our midfield without him is dysfunctional and that he does a very important job in midfield but some just focus on his persistent fouling etc.
But it's OK I mean, we don't need Lucas we need another DM.

Also, just to confirm my so called agenda again. Are there any "is Lucas OK threads"?

MODO I think your prob a boss lad but you are the reason I can't be arsed. You make me not be arsed. SCMs loss.

Well that's very unfortunate but I feel I've taken on the role of "Lucas defender" and I'll happily take the flack that comes with it.

We lost the midfield when he wasnt there, I don't think anyone would argue that. Our centre backs play that far apart, we need a dm sat in there, the other three aren't natural enough at it. It's also worth noting that our defensive play has been even worse since Allen got injured and Gerrard came back. Stevie is/was an amazing footballer, but we just seemed to be the sum of our parts more with the other three. Certainly more balanced and disciplined.

Its also worth saying that the idea of us needing competition for Lucas, is a separate issue to us fucking up and thinking we could get away with playing so open and without a natural defensive midfielder.

Lucas came on and changed the game

The same could be said for any defensive midfielder who could have come on, as Gerrard was that abysmal in that role.

It's Brendan's fault for saying we could win the league earlier this week.

Well we've learned a few things:

1. Coutinho can't play wide in a 442
2. Gerrard can't play in a midfield 2 anymore
3. 442 is not a good formation for us.
4. Our fullbacks are shite

On the plus side, we did well to come back from 2 down. However, it's tragic we never pressed on. That can't just be down to Lucas's injury.

Yep, I've been saying that for a while. Its the type of player we need not just Lucas in particular.
He should have startes today though, obvs.

Oh and if lucas is injured and Gerrard stays a load of me hoop... Then we definitely need another cm

I see Luis is getting slammed from loads of people from diving for the penalty today.
I thought it was clear as day. They showed it in slow motion and there was no doubt.

Was actually surprised Moss gave it as he let the Villa players kick Luis all over the pitch.

The 1 replay I've seen looks like a dive

So you are using the fact that Rodgers put our DM on the bench as an argument to buy a defensive midfielder?
I would think, based on today's evidence, that it is a very good argument. We looked very fragile without the DM. We know we have no proper backup for Lucas, and many of us would prefer Lucas to be the backup. I think, more than a full back, a new DM is essential this window.

Only caught the last 20 minutes - but by that point we'd lost our shape & looked bereft of ideas upfront.

And yes.... I'd still like to see money spent on someone who can add more in the attacking third. If that makes me a queef - so be it - give less of a fuck, I could not.

No way. It was a cast iron penalty.

When it first happened, I thought he'd dived but you can see there is clearly contact on the replay from behind.

I'm still so fucked off with today's result.

Lucas didn't come on in the 30-35th minute when Rodgers changed the formation. It got better when Lucas came on because he handles the position better than Gerrard (** shock **).

Had we played the 4-3-3 from minute 1, we probably would be locking at a different result - with or without Lucas started. We've won games without him on the pitch, and we'll win many more too. He's our best DM, but that doesn't change what I've written.

I find this high and mighty stuff tiring - just search your name and Cissohoko and see how you defended him as if he was a GOOD defender ... The only reason you get insulted - and everyone has tried to tell you this - is because of HOW you post, not WHAT you post. Besides one person ... well maybe slightly more ... we're all just footy fans who have an opinion that can be right or wrong. Talk like that, and I'm fairly certain people will post in a far less aggressive tone.

As for your 'Lucas is Ok' question - just check the match thread. Things like "FUCK" etc were pretty common ... People value the role he plays on the team.

Oh and if lucas is injured and Gerrard stays a load of me hoop... Then we definitely need another cm

Let's make this simple for Rodgers ...Gerrard cannot play DM. Allen isn't good at it. Henderson is far more valuable elsewhere. The only good DM we have is Lucas. If he's injured, and Rodgers wants to continue our best formation (4-3-3), then we need another DM or we be fucked. Hope he reads this and signs a good DM to cover/challenge/rotate Lucas.

It's going to be a fairly embarrassing climb-down after all the talk of Gerrard's "new position". I'm not so convinced Rodgers will bin it off after one setback though if Gerrard was vocal about being crap in the post match interview that might make things more difficult for him.

I could go on about how awful Cissokho was (I'm still hoping against hope that he will find himself on a plane back to Valencia by the end of the month) or any number of other things but the unfortunate bottom line is that most of them were fucking awful out there today.

We were set up to fail, that's true, but that doesn't excuse the shit passing, ball watching, awful first touches and in some cases lackadaisical attitudes. A collective shitfest.

We've seen it happen on more than one occasion this season and it's makes me see red as is evident in the match thread.

A couple of my mates are over for this game. Currently trying to bounce back with a visit to x in the city. Sounds like a place I wanna visit the next time I'm over for a game.
