Aston Villa vs Liverpool (Saturday 5.30pm)

Hopefully the long stretch without any real linkup play highlights the need for a quality attacker to Rodgers.

Cissokho looked very effective, and Enrique was very decent too. Midfield really let us down later in the game, Coutinho included, but the back line and attack was good enough. Hendo was probably the pick of the bunch from midfield for me, but would have been Lucas if he hadn't gone to pieces for the last third of the match.

Sturridge got it done, Toure was immense, Mignolet proved to be a top class shot stopper as advertised.

I'm kinda thinking that Rodgers didn't make any changes quickly because he didn't like his bench options, which makes me think he plans on getting another quality player in. Might just be wishful thinking though.

This was a result that we've struggled to get for the past few seasons, and have gotten twice in two matches which is excellent. Progress with some potential red flags I would say.

Van Persie basically only needs a half-chance to score.
We are going to have to score 3 to win.

We were half decent for the first 25mins or so and then absolutely garbage afterwards.

The midfield was a joke and the defence was basically playing by instinct. Our saving grace was Sturridge who scored a fantastic goal, should've gotten a penalty and generally looked a class above everyone else.

The only positive to take away apart from Sturridge's continuing form is the fact that we held out for the three points. I'm not sure whether you can really attribute that to 'spirit' or anything like that as it seemed as much down to dumb luck as anything else.

I'm guessing the team will be fired up for Utd but if they play anything like they did today we'll get spanked.

Corrected that for you.

I am starting to wonder if the lack of substitutions by Rodgers is in part a subtle message to the owners about the need to strengthen the team.

2 wins and 2 clean sheets. Early in the season and this is a game we would have drawn last season.
Sturridge, Toure and Mignolet were immense. Lucas and Gerrard were poor, Lucas in particular had a horrible 2nd half.

Hopefully FSG will pay up for a quality attacker/winger. Shame we cant get a great DM aswell.

A win against Utd would be fantastic

Why do people bother moaning and being negative after a 100% start to the season?
The performance wasnt good enough but we won. Onwards and upwards.

I think you are wrong. We are more solid than last season, in large part because of Toure and Mignolet, and we also took a step forward in our possession/passing game. Some of the passing in the first 30 minutes was really great, all the players were on the same wavelength. Had Coutinho been on his game, we would have created many more chances - but give Villa credit for putting him under pressure at all times. Then, Villa played a great 2nd half and put us under a lot of pressure, but we allowed them only 2 real chances to score and then Mignolet saved us. Last season I guarantee we would have conceded in this situation.

This doesn't mean that United will not expose more weaknesses next week. But judging on the evidence so far, this team is more solid now than it was last season. I also think we are physically far from optimal condition so far. Hopefully next week we'll be able to sustain good performance for longer.

Exactly. We'll play better as the season progresses. Guaranteed. The teams of the 80s used to play shite as well and still won. Enjoy, trust, and hope we get a better central midfield. Oh and hope Ryan is right that you don't need one in this league!

Time will tell.

There might be an incremental improvement due to one or two individuals giving us a bit extra something at the back - as I said, it's hard to say at this point how big of an increment that is yet.

On the whole, I didn't think it was a great rearguard performance.

Yep. Although a positive point was they only got a couple of decent chances. Whether it was because we were good at the back, lucky or Villa just wasn't very good I don't know but I'm sure if we invite that much pressure on us we'll get hurt more often than not.

Because it's ok to look at that game and see the problems that are clearly there, whilst still appreciating the fact that we're 2 out of 2. As I think you probably know...

I think thats the dumbest fucking question i have ever heard on here.
tbf, i think he's on to something. If manure or chelski got that result awat at villa, in the manner we did, we would be lauding them for grinding out a result when not playing top of their game and having one outstanding attacker who made the difference.

A lot of discredit to Villa here, they're a very good at pressuring and hassling teams, and it showed today, we should have played better, but we were playing a good team at their home ground.

Yes!

Of course it is but some carry on like we lost. But it doesnt matter and according to Onky its the dumbest thing ever so its probably only me then. We all know the issues the team/squad has but its alright to enjoy a win for a bit at least and also when we finally win on an off day.

Fair enough.
