Aston Villa vs Liverpool (Saturday 5.30pm)

That was a trait throughout the whole of last season mate, not just confined to two games this one.

Makes me think that the opposition figures out at half time how to cancel us out and we(our manager) hasn't figured out how to react to seize the advantage again in the second half.

"It was a terrific win for us. I thought first half we had good control of the game and scored an excellent goal"

"We didn't have a good start at all last year, it took us until the end of September to get our first win, so I just think that since the turn of the year, since January, we have got better and better."
"Obviously second half, we just needed to defend a bit deeper today. Tactically that was the idea. In the first two games, Aston Villa have been brilliant on the counter-attack and if you open up too much the spaces, then they have players who can hurt you. We defended at half-pitch, kept our ends tied together and tried to deny them any chances"

Mr Rodgers

It nearly backfired, but we got the points so DFR.

Granted we played with a deep lying defensive line today considering the speed of their attackers.
It meant that Gerrard, Lucas and Henderson had to work extra hard in midfield. Could be the reason why they looked tired today. Same goes for Coutinho.
But it's usually the opposite isn't it? We usually wear the opposition down.

I think on reflection Gerrard should get some more credit than I have given him throughout the day. Ive watched some of the game over, and he was very good at what Mr Rodgers asked him to do. The other lad...... fuck me.

Those stats aren't really as bad as they first seem. 17 attempts and only 3 on target - that tells something of the quality of chances they got.

Agreed. Arsenal and Chelsea committed loads of people forward and got hit on the break.
We purposely were very deep in the 2nd half and let Villa control the game, something they're not good at.

We "won" the stats at home vs Villa very comfortably but got raped on the counter attack and lost 3-1.
It wasnt pretty, there are still loads of work to do but we at least have learned from earlier mistakes.

The worry is how little we created in the 2nf half though when we had the ball.
You can see that this team needs more attacking options and there is a big question mark over Lucas 2nd half.

And yet we should have had a stonewall pen and Glenjo made a bollox of a great opportunity to slide someone in. Not saying it was good enough, and 0-2 would have flattered us in the extreme....

By and large our defensive shape was sound and didn't allow Villa to create anything.
They weren't creating goal scoring opportunities galore.
Their chances came from a bit of fucking about by a couple of our defenders.

Yeah Henderson also put a brilliant ball across the box that someone should have been on.
We did enough to win the game, and they never (one lucky break to Benteke aside) did that much to threaten. We CANT do that against top teams though. We have to retain the ball. That was what we were supposed to be fucking good at not being a fucking Stoke/West Brom dogs of war backs against the wall type of team.

The first 35 minutes it was like a sunday stroll though. It looked ridiculously easy. I'm never relaxed watching us but I was Mr valium until the wee flurry of corners at the 40 minute mark. Thereafter I was like the Mr bad acid in Woodstock.

Last time we won the first two games in a season was 2008/09

We finished that season in 2nd place.

*slapschest*
COME ON!!!!!
