4-4-3

gerrard - lucas - adam
kuyt - suarez - downing

yes

----

4-4-2

kuyt---gerrard - lucas--downing
----------carroll--suarez

no

if kenny is going 4-4-2 this season then I don't want to see kuyt at right midfield

I'm in complete agreement neil

Isn't that too many players? Woudn't the ref notice? 😉

LOL Portly.

I think what yesterdays match does show that people need to do is

A) Be more realistic with our expectations this season, fourth is a realistic , achievable and highly desirable target. Top is not realistic, although I appreciate you have to have ambition.
B) Be less knee fucking jerky every week.

Stop jumping over a lad in his first game to justify bringing in a player who is obviously not cut out to play on the right of mid-field, I would not mind if he was great when he came on and changed the game, I might have to eat some humble pie, but he had well over half an hour and was just as shit as the rest of them (and he was fresh then too)

It's laughable the shit Dirk gets. If Henderson can emulate dirks last season in within the next five he'll be doing well. I don't understand this dirk hate. Henderson was painting by the numbers today, he did nothing. I was hoping for a lot better.
Henderson was very quiet yesterday and didn't really do much, and one thing you can say about dirk is that he never hides and is always trying to do something. No one can doubt dirks heart and love for Liverpool but i don't think discussing his ability or lack of quality should be considered as hate. I don't think Kuyt should be our winger in a 442 and at the moment our options for the wings are still very limited but the the quicker we find a better option than Kuyt on the wings the better.

It annoys me when people say "Dirk hate "

Yeah completely agree, first game for Henderson at anfield and against his old club it was never gonna be easy. He had some nice touches in the first half and did try to keep it simple but we really don't need to be calling for him to be dropped straight away.

agreed. if i was him i'd feel aggrieved i wasn't starting ahead of carroll up front, though. him and suarez looked to have a good understanding last season.

See that debate i would happily discuss as kuyt and suarez worked expertly last year.

The RM balls though. No dice

I said that Kuyt should be an automatic starter in the absence of any better options even though he is clearly NOT a RM. Its hard to argue that despire his lack of technical brilliance, he offers us goals and a goal threat. Now considering his record, should Dirk be sacrificed for Henderson who is also not a RM? In my humble opinion, NO.

Henderson has something about him and needs time to settle and I love that Kenny backs our players, but common sense must prevail. After all the Premiership is the grand prize at stake.

Now let's go a put the Gooners in crisis with a smash and grab job.

Shocked at the positive comments about Carroll in terms of yesterday's game. i thought he was a weak, slow and lazy shithouse throughout the 90 minutes. very poor.

Henderson was also crap, maybe cut the lad some slack as it was his Premier League debut for us against his Boyhood Team but he didn't show anything...didn't get involved, didn't protect Flanagan...very meh.

I'm a big fan of young Flanagan, the kid had a nightmare yesterday though. First time he's played for us looking hesitatent and nervous. He'll bounce back though, no doubt about that.

On the positive side of things. Enrique and Adam looked the part, faded in the second half...whole team did in fairness but the early signs are encouraging with them two. Downing was in and out of the game but did look dangerous first half...unlucky not to score with that shot. Deserved to go in.

Overall, some good, bad and ugly. Now onto the Emirates.

Scared shitless. Momentum people. How the hell are we gonna gain any momentum if we loose against Arsenal. We just can't let that happen.

Hardy har har.

Vs Arsenal, i would play:

------------------------ Reina --------------------------

Johnson ------ Carragher -------- Agger --- Enrique

Meireles ------ Lucas ------- Adam ------- Downing

-------------- Suarez --------- Kuyt

Aye, I'll admit i'm very protective over Kuyt and more than often leap to his defense. I just think he's proved his worth to us time and time again. I do like Henderson and I think he'll come good but he has to earn his place IMO.

I hope a Henderson VS Kuyt debate doesn't arise throughout the season as it would be a shame.

Hendo did fuck all on the pitch yesterday, but kuyt is poor at rm (not rw, rm) . It's a conundrum.
It sure is Fabs, but we know Kuyt can score and assist when on the pitch. 13 goals and 7 assists last season. Is Henderson capable of that? Only time will tell. Also is Henderson a CM? Are we forcing another player out of the right that is better else where? Nice to have new options anyway.

You would not put Carroll out against Arsenals Centre Backs? He will have a field day

regards

Very much dependent on the sort of delivery he gets, Carroll for all his obvious attributes is incredibly limited in terms of the sort of opportunities he can score from. The midfield that Kenny selects should dictate whether Carroll plays or not, if we are looking to get our midfield interchanging positions and move the ball quickly along the deck then Carroll is surplus to requirements. If we are looking to stretch the play wide and load the ball into the box then yeah Carroll is the man for the job.

Against Arsenal posession is very much at a premium and they are quite narrow so I dont see us playing our way through them, if we can get Johnson/Kelly overlapping on the right plus Enrique and Downing linking up on the left then we may be able to get the sort of service into the box that Carroll thrives on. However the dreaded knocking the ball long to him from midfield option isnt effective, even if he wins it he doesnt really have the pace or technique to take on defenders and for some reason linking up with his team mates doesnt seem to be his forte. For me thats the area of his game that needs to most work, he cant go it alone so he needs to learn to bring other players into the play with him

I didn't mean to post the above. I started and then gave up, I'll finish it some other time.

from what I've read of henderson he is better out wide and struggles through the middle.
Really? I'd read that he's decent in both positions but the Sunderland fans thought he might be better out wide.
from what I've read he excelled at coventry out wide, was excellent for s'land at wide and faded at the tail end of the season when he was moved inside. with the option we possess for CM I doubt henderson was bought with central midfield in mind.

Downing offers us width and a little bit of pace on the left. I can now see why Dalglish was desperate to land the lad.

We still need a more creative player on the other wing, if possible. But the signs are good...

I'm especially happy that we added Enrique. For the first time since the dawn of the new millennium, we have a bit of pace in Defense, Midfield and Forward positions. No one is lightlning quick like Cisse was, but we seem to have accumilated a few good footballers who operate at a very high speed.....

So i'm very positive about the Season from that point of view. It would have been awesome if we had someone in midfield who can dominate the midfield, like how Gerrard used to do in his prime. Nevertheless, i'm still excited to see what Gerrard can do with the assistance of these new players. With both our full-backs offering as much pace, the need for a midfielder to make covering runs to the flank is reduced to a level. So i think this will help Gerrard play better, as he is not able to play box-to-box as effectively as he used to.

Adam looked very fat, but he is a useful option to have. I would have preferred to see Meireles and Adam as we didn't really need a defensive shield like Lucas for the Sunderland game. If it was his job to control the tempo and maintain possession from deep, then i'm afraid he had a very poor second half.

Disagree with this. I thought our central midfield was a bit too soft in terms of winning the ball back from the opposition. A good holding player would have relieved us from a lot of the pressure that came our way.

Agreed, I think we lost alot of the game in the middle of the park, we were overran at times. I would have preferred to see Spearing in there tbh, he covers alot more ground than Lucas, him and Adam seemed content to sit. A few tactical changes from fathead at half time and they exploited this no end, we don't really have the players to play 442, certainly not from an attacking point of view anyway, Adam needs the added protection of a 3rd body in there and neither Kuyt or Henderson seem to be particularly comfortable on the right in a flat midfield four.

I'd like to see Suarez move wide sometimes with Carroll in the middle and Ming or Aquilani in behind. Or just drop Carroll for certain games.
