I'd like to win big trophies

But we can't. Because we struggle to compete with sides who are full of money. The amount of players we missed out on (allegedly) when we were a consistent top 4 team, doesn't seem any better or worse than the players were missing out on now

In the future we're not going to be remembered for finishing top 4 and nearly winning trophies. We'll be remembered for being one of the most decorated sides.

Give me a trophy every season, league cup or better, rather than annually finishing top 4 and doing nothing

Regular Champions League qualification provides the strongest possible platform to win the trophies you crave. Just because Arsenal don't win anything doesn't mean we would win nothing if we qualified as often as they do. I wouldn't be content with repeated CL qualification that led to nothing. We're not bottlers, anymore, like they are. For me, repeated CL qualification increases the likelihood of lifting important trophies and allows us to compete with richer clubs for the silverware we want. For the fans and the players winning trophies is naturally better; the memories, the bonds, the night out, etc - nothing beats that.

But it's more important for the clubs progress that we secure regular CL qualification. It's a chicken and egg argument really.

CL.

It's just so important these days.

Helps us to keep our better players, attract new signings and gives us a foot up to build for the long term future.

Did we really sign better players thanks to CL football though? Honest question.

I think Rafa attracted the better players he signed during his reign, not the CL. We've had CL football under other managers and saw failed transfer after failed transfer. It's as much about the manager as the circumstance.

As for Arsenal. Repeated qualification has ultimately meant fuck all, they haven't won the CL and they repeat the same league campaign year on year. Nice stadium and couple of big names yeah, but it hasn't done much in the way of them gracing the history books.
But tfinancially they are the most stable club and their accounts is just pure porn for accountants @Rosco

That's because we didn't sustain that level of performance. My approach throughout this argument has centred on doing exactly that, not just reaching the CL places but staying there, and doing what we need to do in order to achieve that. Build it and they will come, like the man said.

I don't really disagree with that JJ, I thought the thread was sort of hypothetical about them being mutually exclusive. If someone came to me and said would you rather win the Europa League (forgetting the subsequent CL qualification), or finish 4th, it's a no brainer.

I do get your point though about sustained success, of course. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's pointless taking CL qualification over a cup, because in such a competitive league it's a very real possibility you can be in and out the competition from one season to the next, so at least in winning a cup it actually has some longterm meaning and historical value.

Like I say, under other managers I think CL qualification could take priority, I just feel that under a successful gaffa like Klopp, you have to take it as a near given that repeated European qualification will come anyway, as a result of success overall. Whether it be through winning domestic cups, finishing in the top four or whatever. Building back a reputation is two fold, you win stuff and you get in either European competition regularly. If you're doing the former then I think the latter will always be there or thereabouts.

I want a team that can win stuff. Fuck all point being back in the CL only to get dispatched by Basel. Get good at our game consistently and the rest will come

We now have one of the best managers in the world and if we qualify for the CL and he get the money then he can build a squad that can dominate the league. He is the best motivator and team builder in the world IMO.

It is very realistic that we can win the CL next season and challenge for the league title if we play in the CL of course. Nothing is impossible now when we have Klopp as manager.

Winning the EL but not playing in the CL could mean that we miss out on a couple of players Klopp want.

Who remembers the years we have won the UEFA Cup/EL?

Who remembers the years we have won the CL?

Who remembers the years we won the league?

He can't be one of the best managers in the World. I won't believe it until I see him build his team around Lucas.

and you talk about derailing threads.

You have yourself said that it is not allowed to do what you just did. I got banned when I did what you just did.

Please note that I again didn't start to talk about Lucas. Others love to talk about him. I don't.

I just searched your name linked to posts about Lucas. There are 9 pages of threads in which you chat your tedious shite about him. Given that you're relatively new here, that is completely mental.

Maybe you should look at who started to talk about him in the threads. You will find out in almost all the threads that I didn't. I don't want to talk about him but I will defend him when other posters throw the same old shit at him. You will also find out if you search that I defend all our players in the same way.

I have already said if they stop throwing the same old shit at him then I will stop talking about him. I'm sorry to say that they don't want to stop throwing shit at him and that means that I won't stop defending him.

It is up to them not me to stop it.
