I like the look of all the newcomers but have gone for Mane because he is electric and will open up space for the others, he is what we have missed since Sterling left - a danger on the break and an outlet when we are under pressure.

After the disappointment of last season, I thought we needed :

  1. A confident goalkeeper who is quick off his line and a good distributor of the ball
  2. Two new centre backs, one who is commanding in the air and a good interceptor who can step forward to start attacks and the other who is more of a man-marker, a pure defender who can make the late challenges and blocks, sweep up at the back and be calm in possession
  3. A left back who can defend first and foremost but can also get forward with an ability to cross accurately
  4. A composed, technically gifted athlete in centre midfield who can dictate the tempo
  5. Cover for Can as the physical presence in centre midfield
  6. A pacy, wide player who can be relied upon for goals and assists.
One of those had to be a set piece specialist because there is no-one good enough in last season's squad.

I'm encouraged that we have addressed 1, 2, 5 & 6 with Karius, Matip, Ragnar, Grujic & Mane all looking the part. Wijnaldum would not have been my idea of No 4 but may yet be an inspired choice and he can take a good set piece apparently.

The obvious failing so far is left back but I can't believe for one moment that we will go into next season with just Moreno.

Given that we will probably make a profit from sales against purchases and (so far) have not lost any key players, it has been a really strong close season and I'm excited about the new season, if only we can hit the ground running.

Short term Mane because he's skillful and a goal threat and that's exactly what we need.

Longer term Grujic because he looks very good and potentially could be a big part of that midfield for a long time

I've gone for Matip.

I'm still unsure of Karius, he's not convinced me at all.

1 good save, 1 pretty forgettable moment where he let the ball slide and knocked out lovren with a mig style flying punch.

By that logic Matip hasn't shone either. He hasn't been tested and looked half injured when he has played.

There is good reason to be optimistic about his signing, but we haven't really seen it yet.
