Given how bias the press and players are/may be, perhaps it would be fairer to have a separate Best Foreign Player award instead - similar to what Serie A has (Best Italian, Best Serie A, Best Foreign Player). That said, given the % of foreign players in the league, you can understand why they won't be receptive to such options.

I wouldn't even include 21-year-olds TBH. If we have Under-21 international football, IMO the age of 21 should be treated as belonging to the senior age group (the latter being something I know a bit about 😉).

It should be an award players making a breakthrough counting only debut and sophomore seasons.

Rooney, for example, had been playing in the Premiership for about 4/5 seasons by the age of 21.

Further evidence of the bias towards homegrown players was the nomination of Wellbeck for young player of the year. I don't know one United fan who agreed with his nomination and they were equally amazed that rafael, who has been brilliant this season, wasn't nominated.
