The last time Milner was a regular penalty taker in the league was 09/10, when he scored 3 in 4 kicks for Villa. The last penalty he took in the league was in 11/12 for City... against Reina. He scored, of course. He's got a 9 in 12 record across all competitions in a long career.

Benteke's record for Villa is 6/8; was 2/4 in 13/14.

Firmino's is 3/5; was also 2/4 in 13/14.

Henderson is the only sure thing at 1 for 1 last season. Ha! 😀

FWIW, this is one of the two Benteke misses. Weak ass shot, but he followed up and scored from the keeper's save.



His other miss was against Everton, with a strong high shot that just clipped the crossbar.

We've been spoilt the last few years with the quality of our penalties. After being hit and miss when he first started taking them, Gerrard became fantastic at them and it was almost a guaranteed goal. Kuyt was simarlarly adept at finding the net when needed.
I'm not sure if I want Henderson taking them though. I think he feels that it's a captains responsibility because Gerrard took them but it doesn't have to be. The one he scored last season was very fortunate to go in and the keeper very nearly saved it but there aren't enough players in the squad who are obvious candidates.
Also we have to have someone better at free kicks than Henderson surely? He took some last season and they were all hopeless, as were sturridge's efforts. With the way Coutinho was striking the ball last season I'd like to see him get a chance to take the odd free kick.

Free Kicks : Surely Firmino must be up there as a consideration ? Henderson's FKs into the box are Gerrard-esque and I'd certainly continue with him taking them.

What about corners ? Coutinho seems to do well from the left, right seems to be Henderson.

With this many new players in the squad, I'd prefer to have one or two practice sessions and see how they all shape up before making any decisions.

If Lallana were more of a regular in the team, I think he'd make a good peno taker for us. Maybe we'll just do what our U21s do - whoever wins the penalty, takes it. Everyone in the team bar Sterling seems to know how to stroke it in from 12 yards... and we don't have to worry about the wee cunt missing them anymore:

I think Jules is right, it's a training ground decision. No one really stands out from a fans perspective. We're definitely a lot weaker in that department.

Free kicks and penalties are two completely different skills.

Milner for the penalties, for me.

Coutinho, Firminho for direct kicks.

Milner, Hendo, Coutinho for corners and wide free kicks.
