Overpaying for players

There re times when you should, in fact have to overpay .
For example, fucking Downing. We needed a decent wide player, who could ping the ball in for big Andy. Downing had the stats, the experience, knows the Premier League and had the potential to improve in a better team. Villa , because he had a good season did not want to sell and didn't need to, we tested their resolve and eventually he went for more than he was worth , and more than he was worth was even on the basis of how he had been playing then.
So I think we did the right thing at the time, I was not expecting much more than an above average winger, but we paid a premium for the type of player we needed.
He turned out to be completely shite, but that's another story.
So yes overpay for the right player in the right circumstances if it fits the team and helps complete a jigsaw.

Weren't we in for Ronaldo and if we'd overpaid we'd got him?

I can't agree Downing was a good time to overpay. The chances were his best years were behind him, and even at his best his impact wouldnt have transformed the side into contenders.

If we'd been within reach of a title then theres an argument for it. But not for euro contention.

I thought the year we bought Keane was the right time to overpay for an attacking talent, in theory what we were doing made sense. Its just a pity Rafa did it for the wrong player

Exactly.

Overpaying is all hindsight.
Barnes was expensive, as was Beardsley (British record 1.9 million). Both were fantastic value for money. It's all relative. 35 million for Carroll will prove to be value for money if we win the title and the champions league with him in the side. If we ship him out at a massive loss without a trophy then it was wasteful.
There are loads of players recently who have been great value (Hamman, Torres, Kuyt, etc) and loads that appear a waste of money, Downing being the most recent.

I'd be ready to overpay for any player with a foreign who can dribble and is under 21.

Dilemma: We have many mediocre overpaid players and we cannot get new better younger players in for less unless we match wages.

Solution: Start from zero to rebuild by getting rid of all players earning more than 20k pw (except Gerrard, Suarez). Fire sale!

Result: We may win something in a decade.

Question: Are we happy with that?

I'd be delighted!!!

It was an example - not a particularly good one perhaps. The theory still applies.

Nope, we were prepared to pay, but Phil thommo said he was 'too raw' So we passed.

A couple of months later he went to utd. Bullet dodged there.

I could be wrong, JOn...but as I recall we offered about 7 million and that bastard immediately trumped us with a 13 million bid.

If you have a clear strategy as a club and the manager has pointed out the missing pieces in the jigsaw I wouldn't mind us pay more than their market value.

It really is a very hypothetic question though and you'd only be able to really answer that question in hindsight. When you know how it worked out for you.
