Something we've had a lot of experience of.Its obviously something that should be avoided as much as possible, but do you think there are circumstances when its okay?

I'll give you one example I think is fine - genuine superstars at their peak. Messi and Ronaldo, but not a whole lot of others.

I think there were a number of other times when its okay as well, but for the sake of discussion I'll leave them til later

What does "overpaid" actually mean though? Surely it's all relative to how each person views the player in question.

Yeah but theres still a general range, Downing for example - most people seemed to value him between 12-15m last year. But some were okay with us signing him for 20m because he was an improvement.

Is ' hes an improvement' a reason to overpay? I dont think it is

I thought A.Madrid overpaid for Falcao at the time. 40M euros for a Porto player was a huge sum.

You have to say it's worked out for them though. He's brilliant and his value has only increased.

Fair enough. No I agree that that's not a reason to pay a player big money. It's a reason to pay an extra few bob for a transfer fee.

Price would be relative to importance of the player, age and expected contribution. If a player would walk into our starting line-up, improve the first team, scores goals and help us achieve our top 4 objective while we don't have any decent alternatives in the current squad eg. hotshot goalscoring winger etc. then paying a premium makes it worth it.

Overpaying like we did in the case of Aquilani, Downing, Henderson and Carroll is just not smart. Both Aquilani and Carroll were injured at the time. We gambled and lost in the case of the former, we still have time regarding the latter. Carroll looks hungry for redemption and Henderson may well become a superstar. There's no guarantees and we live in hope.

I think people over pay for potential now because of fear of someone else getting them. Like already said, a top player year after year going for shit loads is ok, just gets me when kids from lower divisions are going for masses now before doing anything.

All managers have overpiad not just ours, fergie has done it loads of times

Is it ok to overpay for the ***english premium***?
No it isn't because the players haven't realised their potential or showed any real growth. Henderson may have been touted as one for the future but all he is now is a struggling CM.

Everyone said utd overpaid for rooney.

Did they fuck.

They said the same about Carrick, & it seems again, they were right.

They will probably say it about baines too , & again they'll be wrong.

Does anyone think it matters where you are as a club when you overpay?

For example, with Suarez suspended and Carroll off form, we were primed to get bent over if were to get a striker. Now if it was going to be the difference between winning the league or not I can live with that. But when its difference between 7th and 8th I'll keep the money and take 8th

I'm not sure there are any rules to follow regarding this, it simply depends on the player and our requirements/position at the time.

If it was Cavani we we're buying and he was asking for £80K while we were offering £60K I'd be livid.

You haven't really understood what Ross asked have you?

The point is, it is only seen as over paying when they are a flop. Torres is seen as an overpayment but if he had banged in 30+ goals last year and won them the PL he would be deemed a good deal

EG Berbatov,at the time seemed like a reasonable deal, not now

I thought of Ashley cole when this thread was started.

He went to Chelsea and arse got gallas who was pretty decent at the time, I wonder which club thought they were getting better value at the time.

This is from wiki....

On 28 July 2006, Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein confirmed that Arsenal and Chelsea had been in "civil talks" about the player.[16] Chelsea insisted they would not raise their £16million bid for Cole, but Arsenal held out for at a higher valuation of £25 million.[17] Negotiations continued throughout August and looked to be heading for deadlock, but eventually Cole signed for Chelsea on 31 August for a fee of £5 million, with William Gallas being transferred from Chelsea to Arsenal as part of the same deal. The deal was closed after the transfer window had officially ended, and was not confirmed until an hour and a half after the deadline had passed.[18]

I guess it would be okay to overpay on a transfer fee if we were under paying on wages.

How much did Arsenal pay for Thierry Henry? His first season was a flop...

[Edit] Just googled it. 11 million. Hmmmn, not really overpaying for him...😳
