I realise that Ian Dickshit Ayre probably approached Del Piero at the airport, asking him to listen to his offer before he went. Del Piero responded by saying "don't touch me" and threw some spare change at him. Which Ian will now put toward an improved bid for Clint Dempsey.

He's going to announce today whether or not he is joining Sydney FC.

Italian media (as well as Australian media) have said Sydney FC are in pole position to sign Del Piero.

Del Piero has spoken out about wanting to leave a legacy with his next move after Juve ... as much as I'd love to have him at LFC, I don't really see what type of legacy he could leave here ...

Whereas Sydney FC .... he'll come in and instantly crowd figures for all games will go through the roof, and the media hype for the new season will be unprecedented ... plus there's the fact that we have nice beautiful weather, beaches, and women here 🙂

Italian World Cup hero Alessandro Del Piero has agreed to play for two-time champion Sydney FC in the forthcoming A-League season.
Sky Blues chief executive Tony Pignata and player agent Lou Sticca have sealed a deal with Del Piero's agent and brother Stefano in Turin.

The deal for one A-League season is believed to be worth $2 million.

Del Piero, 37, is expected to sign a contract immediately before an official press conference in Turin on Wednesday at 11am (AEST 7pm) to announce the Sky Blues' prized acquisition.

Del Piero, who has just ended a 19-year career with Italian giant Juventus, will be the new face of the A-League and expected to push the club's average home gate well past the 15,000 mark.

The main sticking points during week-long negotiations that started with intercontinental video hook-ups were the former Juve striker's huge business interests, personal sponsorships and image rights.

Sydney expects Del Piero, who has been voted Italy's most popular current sportsman ahead of motorcycle ace Valentino Rossi, to join his new teammates within a fortnight.

A Sydney spokesman has denied that the deal was officially done.

Smokescreen!!! We're still getting him.

Quit trying to be a spoilsport & just believe Roopy!!!

Jesus F*cking Christ are we really excited about getting a 37 year old who's finished.

We don't pay 6M for a 29 year old as there is no value but we will pay a 37 year old former great footballer 1m-2m for a year?

What happened to no short term fixes?

Thank God he's gone to Sydney. What an awful idea

lol yes!

It's a done deal, the Sydney FC CEO has been in Turin for the past few days wrapping up the talks with Stefano Del Piero - Alessandro Del Piero's brother & agent.

I don't think Del Piero is what we need. He was a great player, but he is never a number 9. And he was getting too slow even from Serie A, let alone the Premiership. Can't see him being a success here.

Is it just me?
I'm totally not excited about this...
He's 37. And not what we need.

Would rather we re-signed Yossi.

It's not just you (read the first page again). But not Yossi unless you just want to go see him in the physio's (he's out for 3-4 months I believe).

I think someone needs to go around to Themn's house to stop him hanging himself from the lounge light fitting.

Back to the thread.

Fuck all you naysayers.

Del Piero playing for Liverpool.

It's surely impossible to not be excited by that sentence!

Honestly if that sentence was made 10 years ago I would have been; but now...

I have some doubts.

Oh dear, we're soiling ourselves over a 37 yr old.

The answer to our prayers indeed. Its official, we are now Blackburn...

He may be 37 but I reckon he could still teach Suarez a thing or two about scoring.

If he comes it will only be a good thing. He might even score a few goals.

To those saying he will be our Gary Mac. Gary made 45 and 38 appearances respectively in his 2 seasons with us (can't find a breakdown of start/sub).. Even Stevie doesn't look like getting that many in, let along ADP who has never been in England!

If we're going to just giving him sub appearances in games then I'd rather give that opportunity to a selection of youngsters instead of being back in this same position in a year or twos time when we need someone to step in and we have still unproven talent in the reserves.

I'd be gutted if he came to liverpool. Have we really sunk THAT low? Del Piero was finished years ago let alone getting him now.

Crowd figures, media hype and all that stuff will vanish straight back into thin air when he goes home to Italy, whereas here he can help establish a new regime at one of the greatest clubs in world football. If he ends up in Sydney in preference to us it'll be because he'd already given some kind of assurance, nothing more.

We need a short-term fix. Most clubs do at one time or another. And many said the same kind of thing about Sir Gary when we sisgned him.
