Newcastle United v Liverpool - Match Thread

Agreed, but Klopp is looking to him as being our primary backup option at both RB and LB next season. Not quite sure he's ready.

Keita has been consistently cutting out balls in the middle of the pitch. Its even more impressive in this side than it has been in recent games cos the players in front of him aren't all (or at all TBH) tracking back to take runners/pass options out of the game.

If this is our backup forward line, it's just not good enough unfortunately.

Minamino has had a couple of good moments, but still needs to find his right position and groove. I have some time for him because technically he looks quite able. He needs to hit the weight room. Think he csn eventually be a decent Firmino alternative.

Ox has two weapons in his locker - his short burst of pace, and a very impressive shot. He needs some space to unleash both, and both are generally easily defended against. When those two are not available to use, he tends to look very pedestrian.

Origi I'm just about done with. Cult hero forever. But if he doesn't go out and play regular football somewhere else, he'll stagnate very very quickly.

Semi-seriously, I hope Jurgen will hire a crossing coach next season. We generally play an intelligent game, but we still just cross the ball in as if every keeper is Pickford and all of their defenders are midgets. We've got quite short forwards, so there's no point in these random crosses. If there's one tactical issue that begs for analysis and coaching, it's when our wide players get the ball on the wing - unless we think we've got a serious chance of getting to a cross, then don't cross. Everything else on the pitch, on good days, is so refreshingly rational, let's extend it to crossing, eh?

I might be wrong, but don't we have a decent record at scoring from crosses?

This Rachel woman with the carefully-arranged feet, putting VDV right. Oh, how I love media virtue signalling.

Depends what you mean by decent. Scoring every so often in between many, many, idiotic punts collected by the keeper, then yes, I bet we're fantastic. We were clearly brilliant at it in the first half.

We do score more than anyone else in the league from crosses (as far as I remember), so I’m sure it’s intentional. Agree that there were a few lazy ones today though.

Van Dyke scored 4 last season and 5 this season, Hyppia only scored 4 in one season, otherwise it was generally 1 or 2 per season

Oh. That's me told.

It felt much regular to me that big sami did it. Shows what I know.

Ah well. Ignore me, as per, I'm talking shite.

you are not that far off actually.

Hyypia scores 5 goals per season in 3 straight seasons from 2001-2004.
35 goals for a centre back (Liverpool only) is not a bad return i guess.
38 career goals.

van Dijk return is better. 6 last season and 5 for this one.
and he already scored 40.

There are always lazy ones. If you're not strengthening the team with new signings, then you have to look at every single aspect that can be improved, and be obsessive about them. Look at the second half of the City and Arsenal games - stats might impress gutbucketed Gooner fans on YouTube but the sight is compelling, we still need cooler heads and sharper minds when it comes to such situations, and, in those rare instances when we are in trouble, which are likely to increase next season, we tend to revert to aimless punts into the box when we really need to get results.

This is why watching Werner sign elsewhere was very annoying, just having one forward who seems to be top level would give us many options in the front 3. I can see div leaving and ox fading into the background.

Oh yeah, I was reading the league goals column ... you can ignore me now 🙂

Looking like West Ham won't be helping Bournemouth today. They haven't had a shot on target against Villa.

Chelsea are in the CL. The only "exciting" game is the Leicester - Man U game.

Good goal by Big Div.

All in all though, another game that demonstrates the weaknesses of our squad.

Lovely for Origi. If he IS going, then that's great he's going out with that. What an enigma that guy is - he has the ability to do that every game.
Origi's always had ability. But players of his age need to play regularly to develop. He's picked up many bad habits, especially off the ball.

Blimey Robertson with that pass. What's the replacement of 'sending a telegram'? Tweeting the pass?
