ryan is 100% correct. good midfielders (and defenders for that matter) will read the game and and snuff out danger early, and if it is too late to snuff the danger out they will stay on their feet as long as possible eliminating the need to make a rash challenges. dixon is was spot on with his analysis of flanngan's intelligence when he (flannigan) forces the arsenal player wide rather than making a rash challenge which could have resulted in a free kick or worse being bypassed entirely. how many sliding tackles did you see alonso make, or didi, or sami, three players that read the game superbly.
Ive seen Steven Gerrard (our best CM of all time) make hundreds of them. I disagree totally and wholeheartedly with both of you. A slide tackle is one of the most beautiful things in the game of football and when its nescesary its better to have an expert at it.
Youre example Re-Dixon by the way is completely ignoring the fact that AS HE WAS TALKING the clip showed Robinson put a slide tackle in on Walcott who had gained a pace on him down the line. He did it perfectly and stopped an almost sure fire cross coming in.
I didn't say I think ALL sliding tackles are a waste of time I said MOST of them are, the majority of the time they are not needed. look at the game with manu when carra totally clatters nani, 1-0 up, no danger, in slides jamie and totally takes nani out which. WHY? that EASILY could have resulted in him being sent off totally giving the initiative back to the mancs.
there is a reason sami wasn't booked for several seasons when he first joined liverpool, because he didn't make rash challenges. as for example of gerrard that was early in his career, he hardly makes any now.
Ryan suggested being a GREAT slide tackler was redundant. You said 'I agree 100%' and then use an example of Jamie Carragher (NOT a great slide tackler) to prove your point?
Being GREAT at ANYTHING in football is vital for ALL of our players i would have thought.
This wooly fucking tactical bollocks that is prevalant in the game today 'Oh he should jockey him/read the game better/ stay on his feet and use the force to win the ball' does my fucking nut in, it makes me grind my teeth reading some of the posts that some of our tactical geniuses make.
A slide tackle is vital in the armory of a player. A bone crunching slide tackle CAN make the difference to a whole game.
Redundant my fucking knob.
okay, point taken. I've come at ryan's point from a different angle.
in my humble opinion the majority of sliding tackles are unnecessary but obviously if you are actually GOOD at sliding tackles it's a good asset to have.
I agreed with ryan's because if a footballer can read the game and position himself correctly, anticipate danger, snuff out threats at the source then sliding tacklers ARE (or rather SHOULD) be redundent.
Thats like saying a keeper should NEVER have to make a diving save. Its just pie eyed crap Neil.
that's a rubbish example as a keeper will ALWAYS need to make saves. how the fuck can a keeper position himself to snuff out danger at the source and therefore not need to make a save? a keeper could be the best reader of the game ever but he will still have to make the save all he'd be able to do is make it as difficult as possible for the attacker to score (closing down the angle, etc).
But if he positioned himself correctly he would never have to dive to save it. He would always be in the correct position to just have the ball thump straight into his chest.
In an ideal world keepers who make one handed diving saves to tip them round the post would be redundant.
you need to read what you're saying.
let's say the keeper is pepe (an excellent reader of the game) sees that his centre backs are two spread apart and can see a quick triangle of passes will bypass the centre backs entirely how could he position himself to prevent himself having to make a save? he couldn't, you're talking rubbish.
on the other hand a midfielder ABSOLUTELY can position himself between the centre backs, his midfielder partner and the oppostion attacker to keep making sliding tackles to an absolute minimum.
