I think you'll find the ideal physical shape for a holding and/or defensive midfielder debate takes that award.
maybe, and yet our current number one holding midfielder is built like a twig, therefore my point was born out over time.
Oh goddddd!!
going from memory as the argument was ages ago, people were saying you have to be built like tyson to be an effective holding midfielder, which is patently bullshit.
HAHAHAHAHA. No YOU said you would be concerned if Aquilani was a holding midfielder as he was SLIGHTLY built. YOU SAID IT.
okay, if I 'DID' say that then I was wrong. there, happy?
Im always happy kiddo.
I just read that thread and it made me near piss myself. I want to link it but i dont want you thinking im being a shit. So much win in it though.
if you want to link the thread link it, not bothered. if I did say I have concerns over aqua's slight build then obviously management was concerned as well as he played a handful of games in the centre of midfield as was promptly shipped out but I've since changed my mind with regards to needing to be physically imposing to hold a position in the middle of the park as I've observed severel CMs since who aren't physically imposing at all.
there, if you think I'm unable to conceed a point if I think I'm wrong then you're wrong.
Awwwww youve ruined it. Now i cant link it. Its FUCKING funny though. It was a bad day for you. Luckily you have a lot more good days than bad ones ay?

The funniest thing here is that Ryan will undoubtably read this and have a chuckle and think yeah some fair points, whereas Neil (the real deal) will argue until the fucking cows come home about which blade of grass each player should be on to stop the opposition in their tracks.
I conceeded the point that being GOOD at sliding tackles is a useful attribute but I will never ever conceed the point that a midfielder/defender doesn't need to slide in as much if reads the game correctly and positions himself accordingly. never.
You're looking at it if every player was a defensive midfielder. That's you're undoing. If you had a prefixed your point to a DM then you're making a decent enough point.

But when other players venture forward and the ball is given away, the need for a slide tackle is absolutely crucial in the game, be in from someone tracking back, or from someone who has stayed back and is trying to cover a huge amount of space.

to be honest I read ryan's post too quickly and hastly agreed 100% with it, the truth is I only half agree with ryan's original point. I agree that better reading of the game makes sliding tackles mostly redudent but HAVING the ability to make sliding tackles is obviously a good thing.

what annoys me (and traore used to do this all the time), is when a player doesn't read the game and then make a last ditch sliding tackle to retrive the situation and then you have a forum member or tv pundit say something like, 'oh, great sliding tackle' and I think to myself if the guy (the player) had a footballing brain that sliding tackle wouldn't have been necessary.

again, going back to flanngan I think the guy has a great future because he has a footballing brain. there was an arsenal player with the ball on the wide flank, he (flannigan) had a liverpool defender on the inside and instead of sliding in to meet the arsenal attacker he start running back closing off the gap of a direct run at goal and giving the arsenal player no choice but to take the ball further down the wing, which gave our defenders more time to get into a better defensive position. I bet any money (ANY MONEY!!) skrtel would have dived in as his footballing brain and positioning is fucking shit.

I don't think his physique is an issue as he is an attacking midfielder, if he were a holding midfielder I'd be concerned. I think yossi is showing a bulky physique is neither here nor there for an attacking midfieder.
what's wrong with what I say, here? as I said I've since changed my mind on a holding midfielder needing a big build to succeed but I think concerns over aqua's physicality was very real as aqua was rarely utilised at CM.

Re: state your unpopular football opinion

look to nip this in the bud,
I've seen slight build footballers succeed in CM so I've changed my opinion on that but it does beg the question of WHY aqua was shipped out, it certainly wasn't a lack of ability.

Re: state your unpopular football opinion

more recently my thinking it's more important to have fight than build as aqua was a fucking pussy, had he had more fight in him maybe he would have been given a chance at CM. for all the problems I have with lucas he doesn't shit out of challenges so his slight build isn't so much of an issue.

ha ha I can't let this argument go 😛

No I'm not.

Yes you are. Here, look.

Well, ok, but if you think I won't admit that I'm wrong when I'm wrong then you're wrong.

Ok.

so, I'm having an arguement and something I said (from two years ago) is brought up as joke, (very mature). I think from now on we should bring up drag up old arguements for every single poster on this forum to see how their views have panned out over the years. the hilarious thing is aqua was more than likely shipped out for the very reason I mentioned two years ago, he wasn't physically imposing enough to hold a position in the centre of midfield, so my original opinion was actually born out but as I said I've since changed that opinion but some people can't let it go.

Re: state your unpopular football opinion

Are Cesc and Jack Wilshire physically imposing? Or Jay Spearing?

Re: state your unpopular football opinion

Can we rename this thread "Argue with your own unpopular football opinion"

Woooow, that was the Inception of internet forum posts. Mind bending by Neil.

Neil, you're going around in circles dude. Your original opinion has proved to be correct (according to you) but you've admited you have since changed your stance on your original opinion. What do you believe now?

I want to lie down.

Funny but not as funny as bringing up arguments from two years past rather than addressing the points I raised.

Re: state your unpopular football opinion

As good as Jack Wilshere is, I don't think he'll ever have an impact on big games the way Stevie and Lampard have over the course of their career.

For all the media hype and love for him at the moment, I just see him as a classy midfield type who keeps possession well.
