John Aldridge's column last weekend
[article=http://www.sundayworld.com/sport/opinion/john-aldridge/pool-should-trap-mous-to-shore-up-middle-of-the-park]I often see Premier League managers moaning that the January transfer window is a horrible place to try and do business – but I would beg to differ with that sentiment.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers banished the notion that decent deals are impossible to come by mid-way through the season with his shrewd captures of Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho last January and I’m hoping he can draw inspiration from that as he eyes up his transfer targets for next month.
There are quality transfers to be done next month if the price is right and the fact that players who are not playing regular football have a World Cup finals on the horizon next summer is another factor why deals could be forced through in the coming weeks.
Sturridge’s ankle ligament injury has highlighted the fragility of the squad and one name I would want at the top of my shopping list if I was Liverpool boss and the first of those would be Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele.
Liverpool’s midfield is lacking balance, with Steven Gerrard, Lucas and Jordan Henderson all doing similar jobs and all of them lacking the mobility you need to take on the very best in the Premier League.
Gerrard is still a great player and his delivery from set-pieces has been first class this season, but the dynamism that once made him the best player in the Premier League is probably gone and that means the captain is having to fulfill a slightly different role in the team.
Lucas has already been booked six times this season and that is primarily because he is struggling to deal with the workload coming his way in the midfield and the same story could be told of Henderson.
What these midfield operators need is a powerful sidekick to do the unpleasant donkey work for them and one guy who would be ideal for that role would be the powerful and composed Dembele.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is under big pressure at the moment because most of the players he spent around £110m to recruit last summer are failing to produce the goods, yet Dembele is struggling to get into his stuttering team right now.
With Belgium in the World Cup for the first time in many a year next summer, I’m sure the former Fulham midfielder will look to get out of Spurs in January if he is not getting regular first team football and he would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool if they could seal a deal.
It would also be nice to nick a player off Spurs as they seemed to spend most of their summer outbidding Liverpool for the likes of Christian Eriksen and a few more players who Rodgers may well have been in for!
Rodgers also need to prioritise signing a quality left back because with Jose Enrique out of action until February at the earliest following knee surgery a few days ago, it is a clear weak spot in the team.
Loan signing Aly Cissokho has been playing on the left side of the defence, but he has not impressed me at all and while young Jon Flanagan was excellent in that position against Everton last weekend, Rodgers needs to look at a classy performer in that position to provide competition to Enrique.
There are suggestions that Liverpool are close to signing Barcelona starlet Martin Montoya and I’m hearing good things about the young player who cannot get into a star-studded Barca side. His arrival could be a coup for the club so hopefully they pull it off.
My reservations don’t stop there, as when I look at this current Liverpool team, there are still big areas of improvement required. One is to address their long-standing problem when it comes to defending set-pieces.
Romelu Lukaku’s stunning header in the Merseyside derby last week was another example of the weakness in that facet of the game and it needs to be solved quickly. That is easier said than done with the current make-up of the team.
I’ve said for some time that Liverpool lack a physical presence in the team and while Dembele would primarily be a signing to bolster the midfield, his presence in the box at set-pieces would also be useful.
Whatever happens in this upcoming transfer scramble, I still don’t believe Liverpool have any chance of challenging for the title this season because even though they have had a decent start to the season, the optimism around the team has been spun primarily by Suarez and Sturridge
There may be some Liverpool supporters who think I should be a little more optimistic about their hopes than merely suggesting a top four finish is the target in 2014, but that is still how I see it.[/article]
