I wish we had taken a gamble on McClean. He was cheap, talent, determination, strength and youth. He was exceptional for Derry City last season and would have given us a viable option on the left, although it is debatable whether he would have got the same opportunities at LFC. The above also goes for a lad we recently sold to Burnley, a left back, Daniel Lafferty.

Heard a lot of good things about Lafferty. It should be Michael O'Neill's number one priority to get him on board in the NI set-up because NI have been crying out for a decent left-back for years. Unless, of course, he insists he wants to play for the Republic, then that's a different matter.

I think O'Neill is on the phone to every potential N.Ireland player. On the subject of Derry City, there are two other young fellas, who, with the right application could make it in the English leagues, McBride a centre half and McLaughlin another left winger. However whether they set themselves apart like McClean (sighted at 5am running the hills around Derry when he trying to get into the first team) remains to be seen.
