Minging it till 2020

Just a theory, but worth considering:

The club/Klopp realise they're only going to get the keeper they really want in the summer. Klopp also realises that in order for us to achieve anything this season, he needs Mignolet's form and confidence to improve in the next 3 or 4 months. So what does he do, he praises him, says he's happy with the keeper situation, and goes even further and offers a new deal. He's basically saying, "I believe in you". All the while hoping it pays off, Mignolet starts believing it, puts in a few decent performances in the run in, and we sell him to the highest bidder in the summer.

Could this whole thing just be a psychological confidence boosting tactic? Elaborate and expensive one if true.

No

That's wishful thinking. A 5 year deal and a significant pay rise for Mignolet by all accounts is very, very worrying to say the least. We're basically rewarding failure. It's been obvious for ages now Mig is nowhere near good enough.

Maybe it's the way Klopp works - preferring to stick with stability between the posts (as long as the keeper wasn't shit) while changing the defenders.

When he was at Mainz, he stuck with his keeper (Wache) every season (there was one season when Wache played fewer games but I'm not sure if that was due to an injury). When he moved to Dortmund, he stuck with his keeper again (Weidenfeller) every season.

Were they top tier keepers then? I have no idea as I never watched them in action. I think we might make a guess based on their national team records though (not the best indicator, I know, but possibly useful as some sort of guide). Wache didn't have a cap at any level and Weidenfeller only had about 3 appearances for the German U21s, a cap for the German B team in 2005, and then only won his first national caps in 2013, at age 32 or 33. That doesn't necessarily mean they suck, but maybe we can assume they aren't really top tier keepers.

Folks who watched Dortmund closely during Klopp's reign - was Weidenfeller ever a top keeper there, or just "good enough"?

My impression was that he was just good enough but got better with age. Rurik probably knows this better than anyone.

I think, and hope, that Klopp will buy a GK this summer. If not, then I surely hope Ming improves with a better defence infront of him. But I doubt it.

This theory makes me think maybe Klopp's just going to stick with Mignolet and use the transfer funds available for other positions. You know how every season fans keep calling for owners to make that one marquee signing instead of mediocre signings spread out.

Or maybe it has nothing to do with Klopp's assessment at all, and it's just the transfer committee deciding that we need to keep Mignolet because he's potentially worth 38m. 😉

Maybe he knows how much money he has in his battle knapsack this summer and has other positions he wants to prioritise and figures that a new keeper can wait.

There is no logical explanation whatsoever to this deal. He was already contracted up to the end of 2017 and now we've extended it by four fucking years.

The explanation is that the club rate him higher than most fans do, and think it's a good idea to tie him into a deal. He's 26, which is pretty young for a keeper with his experience, and sounds like the wages aren't huge, so I don't think we'll lose badly out of this. It's far from the worst contract we've given players.

Weidenfeller looked pretty excellent for Dortmund until recently, when his age started showing and he lost his place under the new coach. Some people in Germany thought it was grossly unfair he was ignored by the national team for all these years, although I kind of understand why – he was not a physical freak of nature or a superb technician, just a very reliable, consistent goalkeeper, good at organizing defenders and making crucial saves when his team needed it most.

Ming is possibly a slightly better instinctive shot-stopper, but he needs to make big strides in confidence and commanding the box to become as valuable and loved by the fans as Weidenfeller. He seemed to have this kind of relationship with fans at Sunderland, will he turn it around here?

I'm guessing Klopp sees other areas of the team as more urgent.
He might want to see if Ming can improve with a settled CB pairing and defence infront of him.
Getting Matip and being more dominant in the air might help aswell.

If not we have Ming on a decent contract and might get 8-12 mill for him down the line.
Maybe he'll buy a young German GK we havent heard of yet. I'm praying about the last bit.

It's hard to see. Ming never really seems to exude confidence and the fans pick up on that.

I think we have far bigger issues than Mignolet. The lack of a striker that A: can put the ball in the fucking net and B: that doesn't spend 35 games of the season on the injury list should be our main concern. Also, a defence that can actually, y'know, defend. That way, at least our dodgy keeper would have a bit of help. While I agree with most that Mignolet isn't good enough, prioritising replacing him above our other problems is not a long term solution.

Fuck me, we're being linked with Rob Green as backup now.

Another keeper who excels at making errors at the most important times.

This club pisses me right off.

Ermmmm, Crystal Palace or someone like that, maybe. Most other Premiership clubs have a keeper better than him already.

Surely a keeper will leave one premiership club to another this summer to create an opening for a potential Mingolet sale? Fingers crossed anyway.

Does anyone seriously believe that we are extending Mignolet's contract (when he already had over 2 years left on his existing contract) as part of some big masterplan to fuck him off or reduce him to 2nd choice?

If the club didn't fancy him, they would wait until the summer when he still has 2 years left and then sell him.

It's much more likely they actually think he is worth a new long term contract because he is supposed to be our future no 1 keeper.

As fucking bonkers as that sounds, it is the logical conclusion

Yup I hear Michael Edwards has some very nice graphs and thinks highly of him

No, of course not. Just as I didn't believe that Klopp's consistent public backing of him was yet more evidence of his genius motivational skills, and he didn't believe it really. This contract proves what I already knew. And it's quite depressing.

Butland is bound to be due a move

Yeah he could be a part of a keeper merry go round if one kicks off. All it would take is for one of Courtois, Llori or De Gea to move.
