Matej Vydra and Tom Ince pip Wilfried Zaha to Football League Awards

MATEJ VYDRA and Tom Ince were the toast of the Football League awards last night, pipping Manchester United's new £15m signing Wilfried Zaha for the top honours.

Despite Zaha having secured a big-money move to the Premier League, it was two of his Championship rivals that grabbed the headlines at the awards ceremony in London.

Watford's on-loan striker Vydra was named the npower Championship Player of the Year, while Blackpool forward Tom Ince picked up the Johnstone's Paint Young Player of the Year gong.

That left Zaha, who will join Manchester United at the end of the season, empty-handed along with his Crystal Palace team-mate Glenn Murray.

Vydra, one of Watford's loan signings from Italian outfit Udinese, has plundered 20 goals this season and helped turn the Hornets into genuine promotion contenders.

The 20-year-old has attracted interest from Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City this season, while there are a number of suitors in Serie A.

His latest achievement will only intensify speculation that he could switch to a top European side this summer, although manager Gianfranco Zola insisted he could stay at Vicarage Road.

"I think he is keen to stay," said Zola, who picked up the award on behalf of Vydra. "He likes what he is doing over here and it is good for his development."

Meanwhile, wonderkid Ince continues to be linked with a return to former club Liverpool but claims he has made the most of his time at Bloomfield Road.

"It's been a whirlwind 18 months for me," said Ince, who was released by the Reds in 2011.

"It was not easy being at Liverpool, I probably had a bit of a silver spoon in my mouth, but I've learned so much at Blackpool."

Bournemouth's Matt Ritchie won the League One Player of the Year award, Tom Pope took the honour in League Two and Phil Parkinson of Bradford City was handed the Football Manager Outstanding Managerial Achievement award.

could very well be worth a look.. but no doubt he will be going back to Udinese next season, as will the majority of Watfords players..

I've seen him many times this season and always am left wondering how good Udinese's forwards must be if they can loan this kid out! He has every chance of becoming a top player BUT I probably would have given the award to Charlie Austin.

Watford's midfield has been superb this season and have made so many chances for Vydra whereas Burnley's midfield is very pedestrian and lacks any creative spark and yet Austin has managed to score 26 goals (despite the fact he was out injured for 5 weeks after Xmas). I think Austin could become a huge star in the EPL but it would take a bid of over £10m to prize him away.

Zaha is IMO the best player in the Championship but didn't deserve any of the awards because his head was "turned" by the transfer saga with United and his form suffered for about 3 months.

Totally agree with Matt Ritchie winning the 1st division award he's been superb.

The 2nd division award could have gone to any one of about 20 players! The form of the players/teams in this division has been so sporadic with no consistency shown by anyone. Even Pope, who won the award, scored 27 goals in the first part of the season but hasn't scored in his last 11 matches! I'd have been tempted to give it to Gary Jones (Bradford City) who has had another very good season (at the age of 36) and was the dominant midfielder in League Cup games against Arsenal, Villa and Wigan.

With top scorer Di Natale turning 36 this yr and 2nd top scorer Muirel scoring just 6 in the league thus far, surely it'll be of Udinese's interest to give him a shot in Serie A or at least loan him out for another season instead of cashing in on his excellent season?

Agger made him look very ordinary in midweek I have to say but that's about the second time I've seen him play so that's not much to go by.

Matej Vydra showed why Gianfranco Zola wants to push through a deal to keep him at Watford with two goals for the Czech Republic last night.

Just 48 hours after being named Championship Player of the Year, the striker scored his first international goals (above) to set up a 3-0 win in Armenia.

Vydra is on loan from Udinese until the summer and Watford are in talks with the Serie A team about a permanent deal. Both clubs are owned by the Pozzo family.

The 20-year-old’s double takes his goal tally for this season to 22 and he is reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League.

Vydra opened his international account with a header after 47 minutes and scored a second late on as Czech Republic went third in World Cup Qualifying Group B. Michal Bilek’s side are five points behind group leaders Italy, who they host in June, and two points behind Bulgaria.

Vydra, who will wait until the end of the season before making a decision on his future, said: “Who would not be happy with two goals? I have to thank the coach for his trust in me.

“We can relax a bit, but in June with Italy it will be a completely different game.”

What do you think of Jonathan Williams Pesam?
I mentioned him a couple of years ago as I thought he would be as good as Zaha (different type of player though). Then he picked up an injury that has had him out for well over a year so I waited until he made his comeback.

I've mentioned him 2 or 3 times already since his comeback because he looks even better now than he did before the injury. He reminds me a lot of a young Sneijder and I was hoping we would make a move for him before people realised how good he was BUT his performances against Scotland and Croatia have alerted all the big clubs and we'll undoubtedly lose out.

I think he and Zaha as destined to become top players.

Cheers mate, he's been very good the few times I've seen him.
I'd like to think we're still going to make an offer for him, maybe a similar deal to the Zaha one £10m & add-ons. If United get him he'd be an ideal replacement for Scholes :-(

Barry Hunter and Edwards were scouting Vydra on tuesday, so we're at least following the top young players in the Championship.

I'm just waiting for Utd to bid for Shaw and then turn him into the best left back in the league.

As usual there's a huge amount of talent in the lower divisions waiting to be plucked but unusually there's not a lot of young CB's in the Championship that look ready for the EPL.

I'd love us to take a chance on Charlie Austin and Jonathon Williams for a combined £20m but I very much doubt we'll get either.

I wouldn't be surprised if Everton make a move for Austin.

Shaw looks very good and I reckon United could be on the look out for a left back as Buttner hasn't looked that good so far.

Udinese could consider selling Watford hero Matej Vydra after an offer came in from Lokomotiv Moscow.

The striker is still owned by Udinese, but on loan to satellite club Watford, who belong to the same stable under the Pozzo family.

He has become a fan favourite in the Championship with 20 goals and bagged a brace for the Czech Republic in World Cup qualifiers this week.

The 20-year-old was also named Championship Player of the Year at the Football League Awards.

According to Russian site testataizvestia.ru, Lokomotiv Moscow are ready to make a large offer to bring in Vydra as a replacement for Roman Pavlyuchenko.

For the moment, Udinese’s plan is to keep Vydra at Watford for one more season so he can continue to mature, hopefully with promotion to the Premier League.

However, he remains on loan and this is purely a spell to help him gain experience.

I heard Ian Holloway a while back giving off about Watford being allowed to take basically a team full of Udinese players on a season loan and he has every right to complain.

How in the good fuck is that suppossed to be fair?

how is it fair that some clubs have transfer budgets 10 times more than others? Wwatford are playing within the rules, bringing over talented young players to england and playing lovely football. what more do you want?

Yeah, its no issue for me. If they get promoted then its up to them to deal with the harsh reality of the premier league. They're only cheating themselves for next season.

Under Football League rules, sides are only allowed to name five loan players in a matchday squad and can only take two players on a standard loan from any one club.

But loan deals arranged with foreign teams are recognised as transfers, meaning there is no limit to the number of loanees from overseas.

This was the main case some were on about, saying how Watford have exploited the rules. (But hey, thats what I used to do in FM too! 😛)

Not really. They go up and get relegated but will make at least 30m. Plus they get the same the following season while in the championship. You wont see them complaining. Plus they could buy players with the extra cash.
