I dont know what happened to Matip over the last couple of months but hes a completely different player from the last 2 seasons. Excellent again from him tonight.

To be fair, he looked excellent in his first season here with the only problem being constant injuries and then the AFCON thing. I was very disappointed with him in the 2nd season, when he seemed to shy away from physical challenges which simply doesn't cut it in the EPL – but that was uncharacteristic of the physically dominant player I saw in the Bundesliga. Maybe there was some physical ailment throughout that season?

Now he looks like the player he was – not only defending calmly, but also a threat on set pieces (our only defender other than Trent to score in the league so far). And I love his ability to advance forward with the ball and play a precise pass into the striker's feet, totally dissecting the midfield. Teams will have to start finding ways to prevent this, because it's a serious weapon.
