A good commanding centre back would be very welcome, even though defensively we haven't been as atrocious as some would suggest a classy centre back would be a nice addition to the spine of the team.

apolz if I am quiffing, but can someone describe his style of play? Who is he like?

This guy!

We're not signing this lad for 17m euro or thereabouts to sit on the bench...so who misses out?

This isn't me having a pop at Agger because I do rate him to an extent, he's a fine plater on his day but the on form I'd have Kolo ahead of him.

Going to be very interesting to see what Rodgers does with our defence now that he has more options.

Exactly. Rodgers would be mental to drop our current best defender Toure, leaving him a choice of dropping his new vice captain? Doesn't make sense.
We're gonna be flush for CB's if it comes off.

Wow, that's a lot of money if the figures are true. Isn't this more than Schalke were asking for Papadopulos?

If we are going to pay him this kind of salary, surely Skrtel will be sold or loaned out very soon.

I don't attach as much importance as some of you to the vice-captaincy issue. Rodgers doesn't strike me as someone who will ignore form when picking the side. Vice-captain or no vice-captain, Agger - like every other player - will have to deserve his place (and stay fit) to get picked. As for Kolo: while his form's been great, he's already out with an injury and, at his age, that may not be the only one he gets this season.

Besides, for years now we've suffered from having replacements who often haven't been good enough to maintain the standard we need in the first team. If Sakho represents the start of our determination to get away from having that problem, IMO that's a very good thing.

Everybody assumed that Toure was coming in as a squad player and that view only really changed as a result of our seemingly dwindling interest in expensive centre-backs in the media and the prominence of Toure in preseason and the season so far.

Maybe Rodgers really did bring him in as backup after all and the intention from the get go was to buy big. If that's true, then I'm glad the early form of Toure hasn't changed their minds because as Werner said, 2 games do not a season make and signing someone like Sakho is indicative that we're very much building for the future.

This lad is only turned 23 this year but already has 7 seasons of top flight football under his belt (5 of which he featured at least 20 times).

So this guy and Agger first choice with Toure and Ilori as backup, Wisdom on loan to eventually replace Toure.

I guess that is Sktel going before Wednesday and Coates going once fit

Sent from a mobile device - apologies for any crap

Sakho has got everything in his locker to be a fantastic cb for us, but I wont be surprised if he's eased into life at the Premiership this season.
He's nicknamed the Gladiator. He'll be ace for us just for that reason..

Skrtel is off imho.

[article=http://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2013/mamadou-sakho-what-liverpool-are-getting/]In the past few days, there have been staggering developments in the proposed deal that would take French centre back Mamadou Sakho to English club Liverpool. Today, as he is on the verge of this move, we take a look at just how good Sakho is, and whether he is good enough to compete day in, day out in the Premier League.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Sakho was a far older player than he really is. He has played almost 200 games for a top Ligue 1 club and was made captain for a Ligue 1 game 6 years ago in 2007, which, for any normal player, would suggest he was around 30 years old. However, amazingly, Sakho is only 23, and was given the captaincy of PSG for one game aged 17, the youngest in Ligue 1 history. This tells us a lot about what we need to know about Sakho. He is hard-working, determined, a good influence on other players and, most of all, a natural leader.

Regardless of the transfer fee, Liverpool are signing a quality centre back who will help them replace the legend that was Jamie Carragher. In many ways, Sakho is a similar player. He sets a great example on and off the pitch, he is never afraid to put his body on the line for the team and he will inspire his teammates to do the same. He has a brilliant sliding takle, is very strong in the air and also has a great knack of scoring goals for his team as well.

There are a few question marks about whether he can adapt to the English game. Some claim that, since Sakho has only ever played for PSG, he will take time to adapt to the new club, as it is the first time in his career that he has made this kind of change. However, unlike most 23-year-olds, Sakho has a wealth of experience to draw on. He has been capped 13 times by his country, has won 4 major honours with PSG and also has 2 individual honours to his name.

More to the point, even though he has only played in one club in his career, Sakho has partnered many different centre backs, and he has had to adapt to playing with each of these players and forming the best partnership possible. This should prepare him for the challenge that lies ahead with Liverpool, and I am sure that he will not struggle to adapt to the Merseyside team’s style of play.

Some fans have been complaining about the proposed transfer fee and yes, it is surprisingly high for a player in the last year of his contract. They, however, must understand that they are signing a player who has many years left in his football career. Sakho could still easily be in Liverpool’s starting line-up in 2020, at the age of 29. The reason that the fee is large is the fact that Livepool are buying a ‘young’ player who is also vastly experienced.

To conclude, the signing of Sakho is no doubt a great deal for the club. Brendan Rogers has brought in a player who is not only young and one for the future, but also has the necessary experience to be a leader in the team right from the very first day. We at Get French Football News wish Sakho every success at Liverpool, and we will certainly miss watching him grace Ligue 1 in the coming seasons.[/article]

What. The. Fuck.

It's hardly that suprising. With PSG paying astronimical wages we'd have to go high to get him.

IF he's as good as those articles claim he is then he's the answer to our centre back position for the next ten years (if we can keep hold of him), & if we have to let him go we should make a killing from a massive team, at 23 he's still very much a youngster in the centre back position.
