Anyone got any idea whether he'll still be here come September? He's had a funny old relationship with Rodgers, who seemed to indicate Lucas was pivotal to the way he wanted to play and then has been reticent to play him. There were a lot of rumours that he would want to leave this summer but maybe the lack of alternatives to play in the deepest of 3 central midfielders means that he's going to be first choice next season?

I can only really see him being motivated to stay if he got the impression he'd be a regular when fit (form-permitting), but I don't know now what sort of player Rodgers wants in that position - assuming he wants to go back to a 4-3-3.

I think he should probably stay and be pivotal in that position for now with Can coming in and learning the ropes intermittently. He probably would have played more if it wasn't for injury and him being slow getting back into form. Doesn't he only have one year left on his deal? If that's the case, I can see us letting him see out his contract this season, but we should keep him as at least a squad player, until the end of his deal. We need new blood in midfield though, someone creative and who will cover ground. Milner is a start but we need more.

I think IF we get a 8-10 million bid, he'll be sold (to Italy).

I'd rather we keep him for the CM rotation - and bin Allen if I'm honest.

Improving on lucas this summer would be a huge step in the right direction. I hope he leaves and does well with whoever he signs for, but the important thing is that he leaves.

I disagree. Lucas is much more important and effective than Joe Allen. I know who I'd rather keep of the two.

I suppose it would be easier to judge if we knew what BR's plans were next season in terms of basic formation. I suppose if we play a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 diamond we'll need that pivot role, and for slightly sentimental reasons I hope Lucas stays and gets a proper run in the side there. The trouble is, whoever plays there at the moment is going to be exposed due to the deficiencies in the full back positions.

He fell out of love with the club a year or so ago. He doesn't want to stay. He's been a very useful player for us but he's been undermined by injuries and he wants to go. Get rid.

Fair enough, but in that case we'd better make sure we know how we're going to replace/cover for what he does. I've never been a big fan, but credit where it's due - our defence did look less moth-eaten when he came back into the side last season.

Song started last season well and then seemed to fade badly this year. Can is surely too promising an attacking midfielder to waste as a DM?

I think he offers a lot going forward, but I'm not convinced he could be a great attacking mid. Most of his decent attacking play last year came from running from deep.

With milner/hendo around him he could fly up very easily to exploit space

Yes, although, to be fair, most of his attacking play last season HAD to come from deep because he was playing in the defence.

I know it's obvious to say, I just think the space was there for him to run in to, whereas if he played higher up he might be marked out the game easily

Yes, he does need to run into space. I'm sure he could do a job as DM but at the moment he lacks a bit of discipline (after all, Lucas was forever getting slated for giving away so many fouls, and Can needs to work on his self-control), although personally I think he's got so much more to his game than the kind of DM that Rodgers seems to like.
