Long distance information, give me Memphis

Utd look the obvious choice. Loads of talk that they're after Bale though.

Regardless, no point in getting our hopes up.

The Bale thing is interesting. If they do sign him they'll have to spend such a shedload of cash that even they might not be able to afford many (if any) more players in addition, and they have other weaknesses which need addressing too.

Another thing I'm wondering about is that, as cloggy and others have pointed out before now, van Gaal is not universally admired in Holland. If Memphis really doesn't fancy playing for him, that *might* be a factor if other offers are high enough.

There's absolutely no reason why the deal couldn't be done right this minute.

I'm guessing both the club and player are awaiting other interest.

Surprised no one has commented on this from James Pearce:

Dutch striker has heart set on Premier League and Champions League may not be a deal breaker

Liverpool have received a significant boost in their £20million pursuit of exciting Dutch attacker Memphis Depay.

The Reds are keen to make the Holland international their first signing of the summer as boss Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his squad’s firepower.

Depay’s 21 league goals this term have fired PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title and they are resigned to losing him at the end of the season.

The 21-year-old has been given permission to hold talks with interested clubs who are willing to pay the £20million asking price and Liverpool have made Depay an offer.

PSV sporting director Marcel Brands claims Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are “a step ahead” of Manchester United in the battle to secure his services.

Initially, Anfield officials feared that Depay’s relationship with United boss Louis van Gaal, who he played under at last summer’s World Cup, coupled with the likely offer of Champions League football at Old Trafford, would be decisive.

But hope has grown over the past week that Depay will opt to move to Anfield instead.

Sources close to the player have confirmed that he has his heart set on a transfer to the Premier League and that he was impressed with Liverpool’s plans to push on after a disappointing campaign.

Playing in the Champions League is not a deal breaker for Depay, who instead is more interested in finding a club where he will command a regular first-team spot and be able to further develop his talent.

Depay, who has starred for PSV out on the left flank rather than as a central striker, is aware of how Luis Suarez flourished at Anfield after making the switch from Ajax in 2011 and is seriously considering following a similar career path.

PSV Eindhoven's Memphis Depay gets a shot on goal.
He has yet to make a decision on his future but wants it decided shortly after the completion of the Dutch season later this month and before he departs on holiday.

Speaking about the interest in Depay, Brands said: “PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest.

“The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks. But Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him.

“It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player, but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that.

“There isn’t usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season. It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis. That only illustrates that he’s on the right track.”

Yep, if the deal doesn't happen by the opening weeks of the window, its not happening.

The fear is obviously that Utd will enter the race and get him. But you cant help but feel that we have a chance now with the ECHO story. Anyhoo, no point in getting our hopes up before anything is confirmed as we've been down this road before.

The more he 'wants to join Liverpool', the more Utd or A N other club have to pay to 'change his mind'.

I don't know why you'd think otherwise.

Yeah, as I said we've got a chance even though Utd will probably enter the frame at some stage and get him.
He sounds like a sensible lad so he might surprise a few.

Ha nope.

By the way JJ, I was trawling through some old posts and we made a bet earlier in the season for a tenner for charity. I think I won it. I'll try and find it.

Arf. 😀 Nah, fair cop. What kind of charity/purpose would you like the dosh given to?

Haha I stumbled upon it by accident. Someone posted a link to that thread a week or two back. Whichever charity you like. I trust your judgement. 😉

Dietmar Hamann believes Memphis Depay would not fit in at Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers side are not in need of a winger, as per The Express.
The retired German star, who played 191 games for the Reds and won the Champions League in 2005, believes that the acquisition of Depay would add to an already overcrowded position.

Rodgers can name the likes of Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe out wide for Liverpool, while the Northern Irish manager has also frequently used a formation that utilises wing-backs rather than out-and-out wingers.

Depay has created 56 chances in the Dutch top flight this term
The revelation from the 41-year-old came on Twitter after he was asked by a Liverpool fan, if the Netherlands international would be an ideal fit.

Reports: PSV using PSG to push up Depay’s asking price
The 21-year-old is one of the most lauded talents in European football right now and is also a key target for Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain according to the aforementioned report.
The PSV Eindhoven star has lead the Dutch club to the Eredivisie title this season, scoring 21 goals, which is the most in the division.
