Liverpool’s pursuit of a new striker has prompted Brendan Rodgers to consider a short-term deal for Samuel Eto’o.
The 33-year-old Cameroon striker was released by Chelsea at the end of last season and is currently a free agent.
Ajax are in talks with the former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward, but Rodgers has a pressing need for more firepower and there have been discussions about the merits of a deal for the African.
Liverpool have more expensive and younger targets, but price, availability - and in the case of the recent aborted deal for Loïc Rémy, fitness - have scuppered Rodgers’ plans so far to sign a direct replacement for Luis Suárez.
Not everyone at Anfield will be convinced recruiting Eto’o at this stage of his career is the ideal solution, but in the absence of obvious alternatives it may prove a necessity to ensure Liverpool do not go into a new season with only Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert to choose from.

Eto’o spent last season at Stamford Bridge but it was not a happy reunion with his former Inter manager Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho made a reference to the African’s age, and did not hide his feelings throughout the season about what he felt was a poor return from all his strikers.
Eto’o scored nine times at Stamford Bridge before being released, although if Liverpool are to move they will have to do so quickly with Ajax confirming advanced talks.
Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars says Eto’ is close to moving to Dutch football.
“Samuel seemed very hungry to play for Ajax,” said Overmars. “He is fit and has a great drive to succeed once again.
“We don’t want to block the growing process of our talents but if it is possible to sign a world class player like Eto’o, then why not? It will be fantastic.”
Despite the loss of Suárez and Rodgers’ difficulties in replacing him, Liverpool have been backed to continue their impressive form of last season by Jürgen Klopp, the Borussia Dortmund manager.
Klopp, who remains one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe, can relate to the difficulties in readjusting following the sale of a prized asset. Dortmund have become accustomed to seeing their best players lured away, Bayern Munich waving the chequebook in recent years to attract the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze.
Klopp has been able to protect Dortmund’s Champions League credentials during that period and his two Bundesliga titles challenged the dominance of Bayern for a long period.
Having lost 4-0 to Rodgers’s team in Sunday’s friendly at Anfield, he sees no reason why Liverpool cannot evolve and continue to compete against the more heavily fancied Premier League sides.
“It’s a great club and they did well last year - I saw it,” Klopp said. “If you make the right decisions after you miss [the title] you can be stronger. Maybe Liverpool this year is the big team in the Premier League. We will see.
“At the moment it seems to be no problem [without Suárez]. They have a plan maybe, but I don’t know. We can play better than we did on Sunday, and Liverpool can play better too. This was not the ideal time to face Liverpool.”
Rodgers has often described Dortmund as a prototype club for Liverpool, developing talent rather than hunting for the most expensive, highest-earning superstars, like Bayern Munich do in German football, or Chelsea and Manchester City in England.
“He is an inspirational figure,” Rodgers said. “What his team have done over the last number of seasons has been nothing short of incredible.”
Klopp was happy to accept there may be certain similarities between his and the Liverpool manager’s approach.
“With the way he has developed the team? Yes, maybe a little bit,” Klopp said. “He’s a good manager. We did what we did. When we started we tried to create football moments that will hopefully be more successful than the past.
“We didn’t think about what happened in the past, just how we can develop the team. That’s what we did at the time.”
Liverpool’s similarity with Dortmund also comes with words of caution from Rodgers, however. The German side’s domestic form suffered when they enjoyed their run to the Champions League final two years ago, and Rodgers is wary of the impact of a hectic schedule this year as his team – if not the club – enter new territory.
“Champions League brings extra reward but also extra burden,” said Rodgers, who hopes to complete the signing of left-back Alberto Moreno from Seville this week.
“Fighting on multiple fronts is something our rivals are used to and well prepared for. Our challenge is to remain competitive at the top end of the table domestically while also mounting a European campaign worthy of a club of our stature.”
Liverpool’s £20 million signing, Lazar Markovic, is struggling to be fit for the season opener with Southampton due to a slight tendon injury.

If the wage number is okay, I think it's a smart signing. High quality stopgap option, who could easily chip in 15-20 with some form.

Well he will get chances at our club as we don't go around parking a fucking bus to be safe like Chelsea did.

Great signing.....10 yrs ago.

We should have signed him a long long time ago when he was still on the books at Real Madrid.

He publicly came out and said he wanted to play for Liverpool when Madrid were looking to offload him.

This is my thought. He had 9 goals and 4 assists in the league last season from 16 starts and 5 subs.

That's a very solid record for him playing in *that* Chelsea side.

Could be a smart signing as it seems the 4 strikers (that we know of) that we've tried to sign don't want to or can't join us for one reason or another. Origi is a year down the track and we then won't be under pressure and make a serious mistake with a panic buy before the end of the month. Showed he still has most of his class at Chelsea.

How is he still 33 years old?
They start at minus 10 in africa.

Eto is finished and just looking for anyone to pay his wages. West ham were in for him last week.

We need a player to keep studge on his toes and fight for his place. Lambert and eto are not those players.

it's strange , we've spent the best part of 90m this summer , 90m ! that's the sort of money we've alway dreamt of spending yet our strongest 11 is not as strong as last seasons . Yeah we have strength in depth in most positions now but if we go into the season with sturridge, lambert, borini and eto as striking options i suspect there will be alot of nervous and disgruntled fans out there . we've a tough start , some bad results and the pressure will be on .

Given the lack of top class options available it's starting to look like we will need to settle for somebody. Rather take Eto for a year than spend £40 million on another Big Andy.

Are you a United fan in disguise ? Our starting 11 is better (esp. the defence) when you consider 4-2-3-1, our bench is way better and our squad as a whole is better. We are missing one, maybe two, players tops.

I think we're looking pretty good so far and look to have goals from all areas. I don't get this desperation for another striker, we'll get one when the time is right. Take a deep breath.

From Falcao to Cavani to E'to

A few years ago it would have been a great signing but he is a pensioner now.

No one usually listens to Bascombe anymore, & I don't see why we should now.

That article talks at length about how we shy away from paying star names huge wages.

To go from that to signing eto when we already have an older striker on the books, who will demand huge wages, is some stretch.

Eto would be better than no one, on decent wages at least, but I doubt we've given up on attracting a younger striker.

However, to argue with myself a bit, if Rodgers knows he can get a better young striker, but not until next season or January, then he may think taking eto to pad out the squad is worth it in the long term.

Either way, I'm not gonna panic about it.

Cant see this happening. We are quick to distance ourselves when we're linked to Cavani and Falcao but when we're linked to someone shit it will happen...

I'd be happy to see him sign if the signing on fee was small and he was on manageable wages.

He can still put the ball in net and considering the amount of creative players we have we will need someone to do that.

We need two more strikers. If we're looking to bring in a top player in his prime, then also getting another one like this for a year makes sense.

There is logic to this. He is someone who has done the business at the highest level. He aint the same player but he can still run faster than lambert and can score goals when the chances come. But if Borini ia leaving then we need another striker young striker.

A journalist has a page to fill. He does so. Everyone on here goes into meltdown. Funnily enough I trust BR to sort this out. We have a much better squad now than this time last year. Some more players will leave, some more will come in. THERE ARE STILL THREE WEEKS OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW TO GO.
Good job you lot weren't in the trenches.
