A Liverpool fan has been murdered in Kenya after an Arsenal supporter stabbed him for “over-gloating” after the Gunners lost 5-1 at Anfield on Saturday.

Reports have claimed that Anthony Mutheia, a passionate Reds fan, died in Meru town soon after the final whistle. The incident is believed to have taken place outside Marete’s Bar in the region. Mutheia was rushed to a local hospital, but the severity of his injuries meant that he died soon afterwards.

The man responsible for this tragedy has been named as David Mwangi. He was allegedly spotted riding a motorcycle before the match, and locals immediately handed it in to officers after he fled the scene following the attack. A manhunt to locate Mwangi is now underway.

Tom Odero, a Meru police chief, has stated that they couldn’t possibly comment on a motive for the death because they haven’t yet apprehended the suspect.

Mutheia is thought to have excessively gloated in front of Mwangi after Liverpool’s impressive 5-1 victory over Arsenal, even though they had watched the game together.

Mwangi clearly took these taunts to heart and decided that he was well within his rights to pull out a knife and stab Mutheia. Obviously, police officers and rational minded individuals immediately recognised that Mwangi’s spontaneous act of violence was quite clearly an over-reaction.

English soccer is followed fanatically in Kenya. Bars and video dens across the country are often packed to the brim with passionate fans who wear fake and real replica kits to show their support, even though these items of clothing usually cost an inordinate amount.

When these games eventually kick-off, those in attendance bet on the outcomes and fights often break-out because of the heckles and chants that are created.

This isn’t the only time that a soccer fan has been killed after a high profile game. Last December, a Manchester United fan committed suicide after the Red Devils succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, while back in 2009 an Arsenal fan hanged himself after they lost to Manchester United.

Liverpool demolished league-leaders Arsenal over the weekend, thanks to a ferocious attacking display that saw them race to a four-nil lead in just 20 minutes.

Two headed goals from defender Martin Skertel, a close-range finish from Raheem Sterling, and a precise drive from Daniel Sturridge allowed Liverpool to gain this advantage. Sterling added a fifth in the second half before Mikel Arteta scored a consolation goal for the Gunners.

Agree 100% - just madness. I think there was an example of a manc fan being shot in South Africa by an Arsenal supporting mate at a BBQ after they beat them earlier in the season. In that case as with this one I just find it difficult to grasp how this can be reality.

I think, over the years, experience has shown that passions can run to extreme's with football matches - particularly between the opposing sets of fans. Hell, our own history shows this to be the case and the results are often frightening. Maybe it's because we've seen it so often but, on some level, this behaviour is somehow understandable though still inexcusable.

However, the idea that two "mates" can go to a game together or watch a match together and become so heated that one shoots or, in this case, stabs the other is a concept I cannot get my head around. It's insane and divorced from everything that I would think defines someone as human. In this case two lives destroyed by a 90 minute game of football being played 7,000 km's away.

No real point to the post, I guess, other than articulating the insanity of this incident.

Why not just punch him if he was that annoying?

Crazy bastards.

That would have been the semi-logic thing to do....

The Nigerians are also as passionate over their football.. I had a freind in work from Nigeria... he was a passionate Arsenal fan, always harped on about them.. he would hate it when you dissed them...

Almost raging in fact... I used to proper wind him up just to see his eyes bulge with rage...

How many Premier League titles have you won he'd say... I would answer with 18 titles my freind... How many European trophies do Arsenal have.. ?

That would work.... No no man premier league titles... You not won any..

No we have won 18 League titles, what's the difference?? And 5 European titles... When did you last win a European Trophy then ?..

Funny as fuck winding him up..

Having lived in Africa for 5 years it doesn't seem abnormal at all ! People often carry large machetes or knives as part of their day-to-day work (and in SA, guns) and certain tribes are rather more volatile than others. This sounds like it happened in a small town/village where physical violence can often be rather closer to the surface than in a city. In many countries inter-tribal rivalries simmer just below the surface and can rise at a simple slight. Life is cheap in many parts of Africa, this isn't 'Western' suburbia.

I knew this was going to be in Africa even before I clicked on the thread.
Is that racist? *shrugs*

I knew it was Africa as well but that hardly changes it.

Regardless of culture, nationality or time period, life is precious. This isn't a religious thing - it's purely logic according to the definition of the word. You only get one life - anything so rare as to have just one instance of existence is as precious as it gets.

Two lives destroyed because of a 90 minute game of football is absurd - whether it's in central London, Africa or the dark side of the moon.

I'm not doubting the absurdity of it nor am I downplaying it. Loss of life is loss of life regardless of where it occurs.

@wizardy
Of course it's absurd Wiz. but that doesn't change the fact that you are applying 'Western' logic to a totally different culture. Life is not treated as precious in the areas of Africa I have been to, maybe there will come a time when it is, but that time isn't now. We always thought that life was treated as 'cheap' when we lived there. In fact, going back to WW1 and WW2, how cheaply were lives treated by British and US officers then ?
Sometimes we just have to shake our heads and move on ... as in fact many other cultures do with some of the things that occur in the 'West'.
