Someone say "Alan Hansen" and get it over with.
It f*cks me off that there's nobody obvious.

I'd almost let Carra take over.

There are only 2 options really.
Mourinho and Capello.
The only english-former player option Id consider is Dalglish

What do you mean by understanding our club?
Ideally, if an untested individual, someone who's played for us.
So who are you thinking of? The thing is, in the days of the bootroom, the knowledge was everywhere in the club, an ex-player could theoretically step in and be surrounded by experience, and by people who were grounded in developing teams that won titles. In a way Pep Guardiola, the sort of example which might be in your mind had a similar support network as he took the helm at Barca- familiar faces who had been part of the club for years and decades.

That's all gone now at Liverpool, there isn't a trace of it- right through the club, Rafa has replaced personnel as did his predecessors. I think it is too much responsibility for a young manager to come in and build the club like that. We need someone experienced who can bring a team together, hopefully using ex-players like Gary Mac and Hyppia or whatever as part of a rebuilding process.

Someone say "Alan Hansen" and get it over with.

Then we can all say "Oooh, loves the club, but has stated that he never wants to be a manager; cest la vie...."

Then we can look at the list again, shit ourselves, and pray to christ that Barclays Capital get the fuck on with it and Mourinho is shoe horned in.

The alternatives are flipping dire.
possibly even worse than the one that involves keeping the current manager

I'd hire Mike Bassat if it meant removing Insua from of our line up.

Quite right, and good reply. I can't think of anyone...

He hasn't managed in about 10 years ffs.

I wouldn't be happy if the King were appointed permanently, but as a caretaker appointment I think it could work very well. I doubt he'd accept the job on a permanent basis anyway.

mourinho's the only really tempting one from that list, most of it's pretty grim reading - i'd keep benitez before most of them.

i can sort of see potential in mcleish: he's quite a formidable looking bloke - he's got something about him - but his record's a mixed bag & it'd mean more drab, defensive football. not to mention him being completely unglamourous to foreign players.

i think overall it might be for the best if rafa stayed until these promised new owners materialise: they'll want their own man anyway, plus the sort of candidate we should go for will vary with the wealth & ambition of the owners we end up with. eg, someone like rijkaard might be good with the money to buy the players he'd attract, but i doubt he'd do well with a limited budget.

if rafa leaves himself, i think we could do worse than giving it to roy hodgson for a year or two while the club stabilises. i don't think he'd let us down, and he might just surprise us.

I agree with most of that.

The only one I want is Mourinho.

Nobody else has that little extra that can bring us glory right away, and has the balls to do some extraordinary things to get us nr 19..

How about someone who said he will re-consider his future in the summer, i.e. Wenger?

😉

Another point I meant to make is that I'd like to see a manager who will come in and stick to the basics as foundations for us. Too often in the past two decades we've overcomplicated things dramatically and unnecessarily to the point where it's hampered the progress and development of some players and the team and squad as a whole.

As loathe as I am to say it, I like the way Moyes has gone for the basics alot of the time, he's recognised the fundamental elements of being relatively successful by having pace upfront, athleticism in certain areas, etc. I know we need someone who will 'challenge' but it'd also be nice to have someone who actually can see the wood for the trees and recognise the simple things that most of us half the time can see.

If he is to go, then i hope we don't get a British manager in.

It seems that after Jose we're left with very limited viable options.

Indeed. When Houllier was on his way out, the two obvious options were Mourinho and Benitez. When it became clear Mourinho would choose Chelsea, that left Benitez as a shoo-in

Now there are no obvious choices

If we take Jose out of the equation Bren, what would you choose to do come the end of the season?

I really, really don't know

I'm certainly not of the opinion that we should just get in *anyone* just to get rid of Benitez

Is MONg really a better manager than Benitez?

Nope

Marcelo Lippi would be a solid choice.

The options seems very limited as been said and I'm positive and hopeful Mourinho isn't coming.

I'd be tempted to take a right gamble as I simply don't think the alternatives, McLeish, MON, Hodgson etc are good enough.

Laudrup alongside perhaps Carra as assistant manager and Kenny Dalgliesh somewhere in the mix could work I'm sure.

Maybe Benficas manager is worth another look too - he's certainly doing a great job down there.

Laurent Blanc and Didier Deschamps could be other quite interesting candidates. Perhaps one of the Dutch-ones too.

There are candidates but none of them seems obvious.

Would you be happy with Mark Hughes?

That question is to Rafa4PM & Brendan.
A former Manc without much success so far.

That's a tough one.

Lippi is quite old and has never managed in England.
Laudrup? With Carragher as assistant? Really?
Blanc could be decent but he has agreed to join Inter this summer.
Deschamps hasn't dome much, has he?
Benfica's manager has an awful hair style.

I thought we wanted Benitez and Mourinho then chose Chelsea as we didn't follow up on our interest.

Either way, it's Mourinho or the rest for me. If we don't get what should be our main target, then I'm not sure what would be the best option, as their all not "that" good.
