Liverpool say No to Europe as they reject Fair Play route into Europa League in favour of money-spinning tour

Liverpool will reject the chance to qualify for Europe through the back door after committing to a lucrative pre-season tour of the Southern Hemisphere.

Liverpool have the second best disciplinary record in the Barclays Premier League, but they are expected to qualify for the Europa League via UEFA’s Fair Play League because Arsenal, who have the best disciplinary record, are odds on to be in Europe anyway.

England are fourth in the Fair Play League behind Norway, Sweden and Finland. Three teams qualify through the league and the Premier League will discover next week whether it has a place.

Snubbed: Liverpool will be in the Southern Hemisphere when the Europa League begins

Liverpool have received 51 yellow cards and two red cards and the period for assessment ended on Tuesday. The 10-match ban Luis Suarez received for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last month does not count against them because it was retrospective action, which is not considered.

However, teams making the Europa League via that method start out in the first week of July, with the second qualifying round on July 18 and July 25, and that cuts across Liverpool commitments in Indonesia and Australia.

Liverpool have never played in either of those countries and their visit has created huge interest.
The club have put a lot of energy into ensuring the tour goes smoothly and a game in Melbourne on July 24 at the iconic MCG against Melbourne Victory is already a 90,000 sell-out.

After that, Brendan Rodgers’ side will also play a lucrative game on July 29 against Thailand.
Rodgers is anxious for Liverpool to compete domestically and in Europe but he would rather do it in the conventional way.

He said: ‘We want to get into it with our performance level and it’s highly unlikely we’d get that route.’

UEFA have confirmed that, if Chelsea were to finish fifth in the Premier League and win the Europa League, the sixth-placed league team would not gain entry into Europe.

UEFA give three Europa League places to England each year. Two are already taken — by Swansea, who won the Capital One Cup, and FA Cup finalists Wigan. Rodgers thinks Liverpool may be helped next season by not having extra commitments.

‘If we have a year where we are not in it, it’s going to give us an opportunity to push on,’ he said.
‘There’s also a pride thing. You want to get in it by performing and through (your league) positions.’

Rodgers’ first foray into Europe as a manager ended in the Europa League’s round of 32 this year, when Liverpool were beaten by Zenit St Petersburg on away goals, but they played 12 games in the tournament, the first of which was in Belarus on August 2.

‘It was a long journey this year and — don’t get me wrong — we enjoyed it and we were disappointed when we came out of it, but I think down the Fair Play route it (the qualifying rounds) starts even earlier,’ said Rodgers.

‘I’d prefer to be in it by qualifying through the league or winning a trophy. If it’s not that way then we are better suited to re-aligning our focus to domestic cups and the league.’

To be honest, I thought UEFA basically told you that you were playing, I didn't know you could politely refuse.

Why should refuse entry? Why not just send a weak/youth squad in the first qualifying rounds, who gives one if we're knocked out if we're gonna throw the towel in anyway?

I couldnt care less.

1) We dont qualify through our league position.
2) We wont be knackered from playing thurs-sun
3) We'll probably earn the same amount of money on the friendlies booked

Its all about the league and domestic cups next season, and saturday 15 pm kick offs!

How much are we getting from these games?

The europa prize money maybe poor compared to the champions league but add that to £20 tickets from 35,000 must out weigh a few pre season games.

In the short term yeah, but if you generate more interest abroad you increase the chances of better TV deals being negotiated in future.

And if teams take control of their own rights, or the Premier League decides to jump into the 21st century and instead of negotiating with TV companies just stream games themselves there is potential for the value to increase further

Were we lambasted for that idea last year? It's like turkeys voting for Christmas. We would make a fortune as would man utd. But who would give a fuck about the Norwich or Evertons of the league? They would never vote in favour.

The potential is there to exploit but will not happen in the next five years.

This tour will increase our overseas support by how much?

Nobody has said about the fans who are going to be chuffed to see us for the first time, or those going to the 90,000 sell-out. Personally I'm glad we're not letting those people down to try and win 26 games, beginning barely 6 weeks after the end of the season, for a comp that isn't as good, IMO, as when we won it 2001.

We should be able to do both. AND, I don't think you CAN say no. We should bite their hand off and take this position. By this logic, we should have refused to take the CL spot after Istanbul!

Only if you think the Champion's league is on the same level as the Europa, which is just stupid.

Those quotes from Rodgers are not new .. I remember them from some time ago but they've found a way to insinuate them as part of this article.

Uefa could so easily make the europa league a more attractive proposition for teams taking part. Allow the winners qualify for the next seasons champions league. Its a no brainer.

Its a bit of a moot point regardless, as we currently dont qualify through fair play.

It's always said that without Europe the team is free from distractions but it doesn't work out that way. Morale seems to dip mid-season and the team isn't as competitive as those that ARE in Europe. Remember when Ged had to take the team off to Spain or somewhere for training because they were all getting stale sitting around watching other teams play big games on the telly? Ken Bates took the piss out of them when they bumped into Chelski's squad at the airport. The club shouldn't be picking and choosing.

A few years ago we were in the CL final, and now we're talking about qualifying through the Fair Play league for the UEFA Carling Cup. But still, the die hard critics slag off the Rafa years. You'd take a CL semi final back in a heartbeat under Roffa, you cheeky monkeys! Admit it!

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino says he would turn down a place in the Europa League if they are offered one through the Fair Play League.

Saints are in the running via UEFA's Fair Play League, but Pochettino has confirmed that they will not accept the offer of a place.

The Argentine revealed though that the reason would not be fixture congestion - but because he believes all clubs who play in the competition should qualify by finishing high up their league.

"We would not accept it either if we were awarded that possibility," Pochettino said.

"We have spoken with the chairman and decided not to take that offer because I think in football what you are awarded in football needs to be earned on the pitch.

"We will only accept possibilities when we've earned them on the pitch and not just by fair play, but actually earning it with points and results."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says the Reds - who are also in the Fair Play running - would reject the chance to play in the competition for the same reason.
