So it seems in the summer Aurelio will be released (unless I've missed something) and Insua's not good enough.

Who is out there that we could realistically go for?

Please refrain from the Riise/Dossena/Buchtmann type answers... but we must be looking to upgrade surely?

Well with the German lad being sold , maybe the powers that be rate Mavinga highly?

We were linked with Tawio a few weeks ago, but i'm not sure how good he is.

I'm not quite ready to give up on Insua yet though.

Yeah it should definitely be one of the positions that we look to strengthen this summer if possible. I'm just not sure who would be a realistic option + good enough.

I really like Cissokho (that Lyon left back), but he only just moved there last summer (for 13m) so no, it's not realistic.

Realistically, hmmm.. any LB versions of M.Babbel knocking around for 5m?

I can't think of many off the top of my head, but who are some of the first choice LBs for the top international sides?

Brazil?
Argies?
France?
Italy? (not named Dossena)
Spain?
Germany?

Hasnt exactly set the world on fire at Spurs but I still rate Bale very highly and I think we some good coaching he could become a great attacking fullback, he doesnt seem to fit in there and Spurs would probably take £5m for him. Hes young, hes got pace, ability gets forward well provides width and is a fantastic crosser of a ball. Yes he gets caught out at times but hes like Glen Johnson was at Chelsea he has all the tools necessary to become a top player he just needs the right team/coach

as long as Rafa intends to play disciplnied defensively solid wide players we will need attacking fullbacks like Johnson and Bale to provide an option from out wide, hes not ideal but we are talking about potential bargains with plenty of years left in them

Lahm would be first choice but I dont think hes affordable

Brazil? Maicon (too expensive)
Argies? noone good as Insua has been getting games lately
France? Evra (no chance) / Abidal
Italy? (not named Dossena) Grosso I think
Spain? Capdevila (old)
Germany? Lahm? or is he a RB?

Chiellini please (though he might cost a few pounds), he can also play CB.

It's a tough position to fill, not many talented left backs around in the affordable category. Insua I'd still very young and it's not impossible that he could improve.

It's not surprising that we struggle to fill our left side positions considering more people are right footed than lefties.
A new Stevie Nicol and John Barnes would be nice.

Every club in Europe has a couple of left backs in their squad. But outside of the top guys in England I can never name a good one for us to sign.

I'm happy with Insua. I think his defending is OK and he has a good "can do" attitude going forward. He is also a young player who is going to keep on getting better.

The best LB I've seen in France lately is Bordeaux's Benoît Trémoulinas - 24 years old and he's very much in the same mould as Clichy and Evra: small, skilful and extremely fast. Very good going forward; I'm not sure how good his defending is, as Bordeaux are usually on the attack here. The other possible problem would be his physique, which is fairly slight, but he's certainly worth looking at if we're going to persist with slow, solid LWs like Riera.

What I'd prefer, personally, is to get a very solid, no-nonsense LB (a Warnock type) and a LW with real pace and skill, but Rafa's been here six years now, and has bought at least half a dozen LWs, and he still hasn't managed that.

I like Aurelio but he's injured too often, so unless he's prepared to take either a pay as you play deal or a rather hefty wage cut, there is no point in keeping him on. And we need a reliable alternative to Insua who should remain.

So yeah, we need a LB, but I have no idea who that should be. As another poster said - when I think about the best LBs around, they're the ones playing for our rivals in the Prem.

Chiellini isn't quite in the mould we're looking for and will be absurdly expensive anyways. Lahm is also out of reach. Someone mentioned Marcelo, but even Real Madrid don't allow themselves to play him at LB - he gets played in midfield.

I like Insua and reckon he's improving by the game.

That said we'd need good competition for every position.

The best LB in the Danish League these days is a Swede, 24-year-old Oscar Wendt, and I actually reckon he'll play in the Premiership come next Season (or perhaps in Spain). Fast, technically gifted player who's also good a going forward. Has got a great cross on him too. Need to bulk up a bit but is a rather physical adjust player too.

He'd cost in the region of £4M I'd reckon.

Bunnyman can watch him closer when FC Copenhagen takes on Marseille in the Europa League later this month.

PS As has been said that Lyon LB really looked the class against us. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

He looked awesome against Utd last season for Porto in the CL as well.

I'm surprised that Milan passed up on him. But then, I suppose their medical team know their shit.

I think ship the whole left side of the defence out and bring in sevillas fernando navarro and maybe we could get a few years out of fabio grosso, a world cup winner and a very experienced defender. Theyd both be quality additions to the squad!

The sooner Aurelio goes the better. Insua is our first team left back. Mavinga can be the backup. We don't need to waste money on anyone else. If not Rafa will waste the money and sign another Dossena.
