Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that captain Jordan Henderson won't be facing another lengthy lay-off after he picked up an injury in the 1-0 win at Sunderland and revealed Daniel Sturridge could have a chance of being involved at West Ham United.

Speaking on his skipper, Klopp said: “We'll have to wait a little bit because there was something with the heel. It could be good for him, we all hope it is the final pain before he can go in another direction.
“Everybody knows Hendo is a really tough guy and he tried but we saw it's not perfect so 'come on, let's change' and we had a fully-recovered Lucas on the bench so we'll have to wait a few hours to know more.”
With the hectic festive programme in full swing, the Red boss also called for more time to assess his other options – including Sturridge – for Saturday's trip to West Ham United.

Klopp said: “I'm not sure who will come back. Daniel could maybe, if we try? Joe Allen is ill, yesterday afternoon the doc told me he was vomiting and we had to send him home.”

Asked what he thought of his first experience of Christmas football, Klopp added: “Up to know I think it's good. Sorry, maybe too often I've spoken about this but I knew about this before but it's different when you're in the middle of the fixtures. “For all teams it's a real challenge, you've always got to be prepared to solve problems within hours and be ready for the next season.”

Joe Allen joins an absentee list that includes Daniel Sturridge, Martin Skrtel, James Milner, Divock Origi, Jon Flanagan, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez and Jordan Rossiter, Liverpool are very much down to the bare bones.

Hence the sight of Brad Smith, Connor Randall and Joao Teixeira populating the bench, the trio with a combined total of just two Premier League substitute appearances between them.

Allen will hope to be available for Saturday's trip to West Ham United. But otherwise Klopp will probably be choosing from the same diminished pool at Upton Park.
Given Liverpool face seven games in the next four weeks – not least the two-legged Carling Cup semi-final with Stoke City – the German has to hope he can drag some of his walking wounded out of the treatment room. Either that or reluctantly dip into the transfer market.
