Elvis, Kenny, Arthur... some guys will just always be known as 'The King', this no matter how fat they get, how many games of football they loose or how many round-table session it'll take them to get things done.

Elvis was always shit at football. As a manager his sole contribution was to whistle, clap his hands and shout 'A little less conversation, a little more action, please'.

He did well to inspire Grobelaar though..

without going over old ground there were reasons why we were getting worse season on season and that is because money from sales wasn't being reinvested into the playing squad.
it was a mistake to get rid of rafa. gh fucked up for one season and was given a chance to correct his mistake (by finishing 4th) so why wasn't rafa given the same courtesy? impatience is what has got us into this fucking mess in the first place.
Is your caveat 'Without going over old ground' supposed to stop me from ripping that to pieces Neil?
I dont want to get into it either but Rafa spent 60m on Aquilani, Keane and Johnson so dont give me that old fucking bollocks.
Manchester United sold Ronaldo and barely invested a penny for two years and STILL won titles.
Rafa had lost the plot. You revise history if you want but we were a fucking joke.
Still are.

Money was being reinvested, maybe not fully, but to suggest Rafa was operating on a pittance - as some do, is completely false. In his last couple of seasons he bought

Riera £9m
Johnson £17.5m
Keane £20m
Aquilani £17m
Dosenna £7m
Cavelieiri (or whatever his fucking name was) £3m
Mascherano - The transfer reportedly cost Liverpool £18.6 m,[32] and covered not only the transfer fee, but also the player's wages for the four year deal
Torres £20m
Lucas £6m
Benayoun £5m
Ryan Babel £9m
+ Voronin and Jovanovic

There's plenty of money and some talent (and shite) invested in there between Jan 2007 and his departure

Okay, but why were there always so many sales? Because he wasted what he had to start with. Buy properly at the beginning and you don't need to keep trying to reinvest the same money surely?

Think how many players Benitez signed who he ended up also getting rid of. Yes, some may consider that sound business, because he didn't hang onto his mistakes (although some of them he did, the ones who never seemed to play like El Zhar), and yes that is probably better than sticking with them watching their value gradually decrease, but the other side of it is that he ultimately signed a lot of players who even he soon realised were shit!

It was not a mistake to get rid of him. The mistake came when we appointed Woy to replace him.

Quite, I don't understand the 'I don't give a fuck about trophies' comment, coming from a Rafa fan. "There was a time when it was a sound measure of a good team". When was that then? When Rafa was in charge?

That doesn't make any sense. IMO Rafa is the perfect example of a manager with a good record despite a relative lack of trophies: I prefer getting to a CL final to an FA Cup win; a CL semi-final to a Carling Cup; and a really strong title challenge to 2 cups combined. The point is that I value trophies not as trophies, but as indicators of a great and successful team, and on that basis I don't think the 2 domestic cups qualify anymore.

And on that basis you don't believe Rafa ever had a 'great and successful team' as he never incorporated trophies with strong league finishes ... and you want him back why?

I think you've misunderstood the point while also managing to assume that I want Rafa back.

But Peter, you talk as though a "really strong title challenge" was the norm, we won as many domestic trophies under Rafa as we put up title challenges - ie One.

I agree, cups aren't necessarily an indicator of progress in the league, but they can be an indicator of progress as a club. We've said it under Ged and Rafa, cups breed hunger and promote a mindset that 'can' make you more mentally strong in the league.

Possibly so, possibly not. I think the jury's out there tbh, and anyway, if there's one thing I think we can all agree on about this current side, it's a total lack of grit. I can't remember a more limp-wristed Liverpool side, and that's after winning a trophy.

As for your first point.... did you completely miss the bit where I pointed out a CL final and semi-final as achievements I'd place ahead of domestic cup wins?!

We definitely lack fight and presence. Carroll should have it in abundance, which makes him all the more infuriating, but we certainly lack it in middle of the park, even with Lucas and Gerrard. We need to buy, again.

Thankfully, most players are so dim they can go from insipid bottlers to aggressive battlers very quickly with just one or two genuinely fiery characters in their midst. It's why they all suddenly start playing when someone makes one big tackle. As Mark says, it won't take much, but it's depressing grown-up players are so weak-willed.

the worrying thing is where do we go from here. it's not an exaggeration to say we are in our worst position for decades and it's difficult to see how we are going to claw our way back. getting into the CL will be harder than ever, city and manu have the top two places looked down so it is 4 teams (five if you count n'castle) fighting for two places. this really comes down to how desparate the yanks want us to challenge for the top 4 and how much they are willing to protect their investment.

big decisions need to happening in the summer and I don't know if I trust the people making the decisions.
